View Full Version : Misconceptions/Stereotypes about your country

alexusjonesfan

What are some common things that you find foreigners don't know about your country?
What are some of the stereotypes about your country that you encounter from tourists/visitors etc.?

I'll start:
Country: Canada
A few facts:

we don't all live in igloos
it doesn't snow all year round. (There is a summer season)
We aren't all Francophones

I'm sure my fellow Canucks can add more...
but I'd like to hear about other misconceptions from other countries too :D

most don't wear wooden shoes
most don't have a cap on their head and wear a costume
most don't live in a mill
and not everybody has tulpen in the garden either (but then I don't even have a garden)

it's not true that we are all money addicted either

e.g. Brits and bad food, Dutch and caravans + being economical, French and bad driving, Italians and their mama.

Korben, are the Fins really shy?

irma
Aug 7th, 2003, 09:49 AM
with all the commercials on tv about how to lean money quick on tv all day and it's a known fact that many fell in the trap. I don't think we are so economical anymore

gentenaire
Aug 7th, 2003, 09:54 AM
Irma, with economical, I mean 'zuinig'.

irma
Aug 7th, 2003, 10:07 AM
leaning 10000 euro knowing you have to pay lots of rent is not what I call "zuinig"(in the long run then). must be me;)

gentenaire
Aug 7th, 2003, 10:10 AM
I'm talking about : bringing their own food when they're on a holiday, buying one chicken to feed 8 people, etc. My brother used to live in Delft. When he went shopping with Dutch people, they were surprised at the things he'd buy.

gentenaire
Aug 7th, 2003, 10:12 AM
and if you want to buy some property, you have to loan money, there's no other way. You're still cheaper off in the end than paying rent every month.

irma
Aug 7th, 2003, 10:12 AM
but it fits for me. I am pretty economical. I feel already bad when I buy a few magazines or expensive food once in a while.

the one stereotype i can't stand about korea is the "dog" myth. get over it ppl;

we don't eat fucking dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

another stereotype i hate are;

- all asians have slant eyes.
- all asians have the surname "li, chow, ching, nyugen, etc"
- all asians are short
- we live in houses with paper walls
- we only study maths and science. literature is out of the question.

lol, loved reading the replies

the Kangaroo in the streets one was especially funny...I remember when my cousins from Melbourne came to Canada, some other members of our family kept asking them if they could play the didjeridoo or had a pet koala:o

We used to live in qatar, a small country in the middle east and there are so many misconceptions about that part of the world:

-it's not all a desert
-the major profession is not camel herding
-People actually have a higher standard of living there than in many western countries
-Foreigners aren't followed and attacked
-All women don't have to be covered head to toe in public
-Foreign women don't need a male to go out at night (there's almost no crime and even less discrimination)
-They won't chop your hands off or behead you publically in a football stadium for petty crimes
-You don't have to go to school in Arabic (There are schools for all the immigrants in English, French etc.)
-They don't all hate the US and support terrorists

misconceptions:

that everyone supports bush
that everyone has an suv
that most people on welfare are minorities
that we embrace ethnic diversity

stereotypes (all true):

that we eat too much
that we don't like to travel outside of the country
that we think we live better than any other country
that we're too patriotic
that we aren't cultured
that we're bad with geography
that we work too much and play too little

stereotypes (all true):
that we aren't cultured
that we're bad with geography

lol, I dunno about the cultured one. I've met some pretty well-read and erudite people from the US...but I've met some others too :o

@the geography remark
I remember a tape we saw in our history class in high-school. A bunch of people around the US were interviewed and asked where and how big Canada was. Most of the answers were something like:
"isn't it that country at the north Pole, you know, it's like half the size of texas?" or "Why Canada? did you pick countries out of a hat or something? how am I supposed to know where that is?" or "I reckon it's about 1/3rd the size of the continental United States and it's up north ain't it?"
Obviously, they took the funniest replies and edited out the well-informned ones but some of the answers were plain hilarious.

also, anyone else a big fan of "Talking to Americans"?
for those who don't know, it's a Canadian comedy show segment where this guy goes to the US to ask people things about Canada and often gets them to say stuff for the camera.
here are some links to some clips from that series, pick any one:

i don't mean to be rude or mean to the french ppl (or french lovers) here, but i've a few questions to ask about the country. hope u don't mind :)

1. do most french women have hairy armpits? (i.e. don't shave em?)

2. are you ppl the horniest in the world? (i read a survey which ranks countries that are most sexually active by percentage and France was #1 for sure).

3. do the men kiss each other on the lips when greeting? (i don't have anything against homosexuals b/c one of my close friends is gay - but i just find it funny when they do it)

4. do you ppl HATE anything that's related to English? For example, that a look at this article http://news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,6729751%255E13762,00.html

5. do you eat snails with sour cream and frog legs with orange marmalade?
