Conchita Martinez

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario

Marta Marrero

Maria Jose Martinez

Martina Hingis

Jan 30th, 2002, 11:37 AM
Probably Martina ... but who would have thought Kim would make the final last year?

Jan 30th, 2002, 11:39 AM
It's way to early and there are way to many contenders to give an accurate prediction. If I had to pick now I'd say either Hingis, Venus, Serena, Jennifer or Kim :p Though, I hope Jennifer doesn't win.

Jan 30th, 2002, 12:14 PM
another big  for ya TeeRex for saying it for me.......

Jan 30th, 2002, 01:29 PM
I feel the clay is Jelena's best surface , and that she has as much chance as anybody here...power is neutralised a fair bit taing away the advantage some of the 'bigger' may have over her on faster surfaces!

Hingis will be out for revenge over Jen and i feel the next time marti has match point over her , she'll be putting the final nails in the coffin! good luck Marti ;)

Jan 30th, 2002, 02:28 PM
Iva??? Williams R. you're pushing it. Also Hingis fans, good luck to Martina to win her French Open, but I want Venus to win it more.

I think Martina will finally get her hands on that trophy

Yes, I think so. Iva Majoli is well known to like to party and you know have a good time. I'm not sure she is practicing hard enough these days to win so many tough matches against Seles, Hingis, Williams, Jennifer. But we will see. Still think it's a push.:p

Jan 30th, 2002, 03:25 PM
Iam hoping Jennifer Capriati will continue her run of back to back's :D

even better if Alyona can do it ;)

Jan 30th, 2002, 05:21 PM
I'm going to go against all my gut instincts and pick Venus Williams. She's bound to have at least one great RG and if she can play like she did in Rome a couple of years back and as she did in Hamburg last year then she's got a great chance. I'm hoping for a Seles title though.

Jan 30th, 2002, 05:22 PM

Far too early to make sensible predictions. Which is good, because I can say: either Iva, Lina or Elena D will take it and finally I'll be happy after a Slam final.

Jan 30th, 2002, 06:01 PM
like everyone else is saying, its still too early...players may get injured (which i hope wont happen)...and some may gain momentum by winning in tune-ups...

of course those who have d best chance to win are those in the top 10 especially in d top 5...oh men i'd like to see martina and jennifer meet again...not only in a grand slam but in this upcoming tournaments...:)

Jan 30th, 2002, 06:53 PM
As always I think MARTINA will win.:wavey:

Jan 30th, 2002, 07:01 PM
I hope Kim wins:D
and I hope Serena and Amelie do very well too, the last should finally get rid of her traumatic match from last year!

Jan 30th, 2002, 07:34 PM
Im very convinced Venus will win RG not only because shes in a very good form at the moment (if we do not consider her injury),but also because shes lost here in round one last year so maybe shes more enthousiastic this time!!!

GO Venus!

Jan 30th, 2002, 07:44 PM
People are writing Jen off again. Hehe

Bright Red
Jan 30th, 2002, 08:44 PM
Of Jennifer, Venus, Hingis, Serena, and maybe Lindsay I think one of the Williamses will win it against Jennifer in the final.

Jan 30th, 2002, 08:50 PM
Yep, jenny fan! Writing off Jen again. I did it once at my peril.

I'll say it again, I can't see Jen winning RG (though I'd be totally crazy to count her out), Wimbledon or US: yes. RG: no way.

better get this thread bookmarked now, huh?

Jan 30th, 2002, 08:53 PM
It is early to predict, but we can have fun with it!

The Williams sisters have the game for clay, but not the patience. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see either one of them in the final someday, maybe even this year. Both Venus and Serena have made the quarters, but they really need more match practice, especially Serena, if they hope to make it further.

I've been predicting that Martina will win RG for so long; it now feels redundant! However, Hingis is very comfortable on clay and her record there speaks for itself. She has always lost to the eventual champion, which shows how good her game is. However, Hingis is going to have to be more aggressive if she hopes to win any other slam. Capriati won the AO on sheer audacity not great play. That is what Hingis needs to do. Lay it out on the court for the championship.

I think Jennifer has a great chance to repeat. No one predicted that she would even make the final much less beat Hingis, yet she did so and saved 4 championships points in the process. Jennifer's comfortable on clay and I think when her game is on, she can beat anyone. Repeating as a AO champion will give her a lot of confidence for this year's RG.

I love Lindsay, but she has never been comfortable on clay and I don't see that changing any time soon. Lindsay loves fast courts because they do not hamper her movement as clay does. Yet, if she can stay healthy and really work on clay, she has a great chance to win it.

Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin really broke out at last year's RG and Clijsters came within two points of winning the whole thing. I really think RG could be Kim's or Justine's first grand slam win.

Justine, she can beat anyone on clay and she will prove it this year!

Jan 30th, 2002, 10:26 PM
I think Kim has a heckuva shot. :)

Jan 30th, 2002, 11:02 PM

her eyes look decidedly blurry there ;)

Jan 30th, 2002, 11:16 PM
I think Martina Hingis will do it!

Other condenders would be Jen & Monica. With Jen it will come down to concentration - whether she keeps her mind on the job all though the touni. With Monica it will come down to stamina - at the moment she can beat anyone, but can't pull off more than two good wins in a row.

Justine, I wouldn't be suprised to see in the final, but I think she's unlikely to take the title. Just a feeling.

LOL @ the thought of a Williams' sister having success at RG.

There are only three contenders, in order:

1) Seles
2) Capriati
3) Hingis

And some of you are saying, "Hingis at #3"? What? She should be #1! Well, she's lost half of her matches to Jennifer on clay, she was destroyed by Seles on clay, and has lost to Venus Williams... on clay. And she has lost to Kournikova, Vicario, and Majoli on clay... three players she dominates elsewhere. I maintain she is an excellent all-court player. But she plays best on slow hard-courts and indoor surfaces. In theory she should dominate on clay, but that theory has proven to be false.

Jan 31st, 2002, 03:42 AM

Martina. This is destiny, this will be her year, I can almost see her lifting that trophy now!!!! :)

Jan 31st, 2002, 04:45 AM
Well, its WAY too early to be making any realistic predictions..I certainly would like to see Martina win it...she has that large AO monkey on her back....we'll call that the "wiltdown" and then there is the '99 "Meltdown"...so she has more on her plate at the moment to get rid of those "downers"...she's good on clay..thats why I didn't pick the Willies...thats not a surface they shine on...Monica,Kim, Justine should be there as well.....but a lot of things can happen in the meantime...if Martina continues her good play I'd have to give her the nod....but there are so many intangibles that enter in...injuries.. .some new and upcoming players...who's hot at the right time etc., But it'll be interesting!!Will we ever have the drama and emotion of AO? I don't think so!

Jan 31st, 2002, 05:01 AM
I think it will be Monica or Jenn.

LOL @ the thought of a Williams' sister having success at RG.

Oooo UNSteady... your one to laugh.;)

Your girl hasn't won it yet... so what are you laughing at???

I don't care HOW close she's come to winning... she HASN'T won it, and it seems she's no longer considered THE main favorite on the surface.

Take a look at what's GOING DOWN.

POWER PLAYERS have been winning Garros... and WILL continue to win it. Capriati's and Pierce's power didn't look "neutralized" one bit in their wins over Hingis. ;)

Capriati 01
Pierce '00
Graf '99

Venus and Serena happen to be not just only big hitters... BUT they also happen to be the BEST athletes in the game.:)

Also... Clijsters should definitely be considered a "contender". How soon we forget. Wasn't that Clijsters in the final last year, out-performing Capriati for most of the match?
Those powerful, tireless legs of Clijsters are tailored made for the clay. She could stay out there forever, wearing her opponent into the red dirt.

And HENIN is a "contender" also! :)

Jan 31st, 2002, 06:45 AM
that poster bulgar would have probably said coetzer but he is stupid i'm leaning for Venus,Marti, and Mary

Your girl hasn't won it yet... so what are you laughing at???

GrandSlammed, perhaps you missed my previous post. I basically said that Martina is an overrated clay-courter, and is not the favorite to win the title.

So you're just preaching to the choir... I doubt Hingis will win.

But I think she has a better chance than Venus & Serena...

Jan 31st, 2002, 08:36 AM
But I think she has a better chance than Venus & Serena...

Your a Hingis cultist, and a Williams detractor... what are you suppose to say????????

Jan 31st, 2002, 08:40 AM
Venus and Serena will never win Roland Garros because they don't have the patience to win tight matches on this surface.. plus it slows down their shots.

I think Kim or Justine have the best chance... also can't forget about the defending champ, Jennifer Capriati! I would also say Monica Seles stands a fair chance as well. This surface is very friendly to her game.

Jan 31st, 2002, 09:01 AM
Venus and Serena will never win Roland Garros because they don't have the patience to win tight matches on this surface.. plus it slows down their shots.

LMAO! Maybe if you start a daily ritual of meditating, ti chi, and prayer, give up meat and dairy products, wear only sack clothe, and chant really hard in hopes that the sisters never win Garros, you'll get the results you seek... NOT!

The sisters have been shoving their detractors predictions/prophecies back down their throats for a while now .... so... get in line.:)

As for the "don't have the patience" and "slows down their shots".... just more garbage for the sisters to burn. :)

I think any of the top women have a shot and too predict right now is way too early right now. Who would have thought Jennifer would repeat at OZ? Time and time again people count her out, but you should never. Never should you count out the Williams sisters either. Clijster, Henin, and Seles are there too and of course the Swiss Miss...

Jan 31st, 2002, 09:54 AM
Go Martina!

Jan 31st, 2002, 10:08 AM
It is always very interesting reading what others are so very sure what the WILLIAMS will not do. Such confidence have these two bit psychics.

So far these same readers of chicken bones have said the Williams:

1. Will never play pro
2. Will never win a pro match
3. Will never get big endorsements
4. Will never win a pro tournament
5. Will never be the first sisters to win a tourney on the SAME day
6. Will will never break the top ten
7. Will never win a clay event
8. Will never win all 4 GS mixed doubles in a year
9. Will never win all 4 GS doubles
10. Will never win a Grand Slam singles titles.
11. Will never, ever, play each other in a GS final
12. Will never have a chance for the Tennis Hall of Fame
13. Will never win Olympic gold medals
14. Will never kick the butts of 3 top ten players in 16 hours

And now the latest chicken bone prediction:

15. WILLIAMS will never, ever, ever win at Roland Garos. :p

Oh well, such is life. :wavey:

Jan 31st, 2002, 10:42 AM
JENNIFER CAPRIATI will defend her title!

I wouldn't bet my money on eny of them

Feb 1st, 2002, 01:40 AM
Yep, sorry Vanity, but Tee Rex, Williams-Rulez and all the others are right.. I'm not particularly a Williams fan (except a small soft spot for Serena :) .. but you can never, never count them out. They have proved so many times in so many different situations that they not only survive, they triumph. Patience is a learned thing, both are getting older & wiser, and both are getting more exposure to clay. Plus, pretty soon they will be focussing on winning the Championships they haven't won before... like RG! Anybody right now who categorically says they can't is underestimating them, IMHO. Their track record of surmounting obstacles is undeniable. :)

I say Monica Seles or Martina Hingis i'd love to see these 2 playing in the final!

Feb 1st, 2002, 04:19 AM
Venus Williams can practically win in any surface, she just needs to put her mind into it just as she has done over the last two years. True, she has not done well on the clay of Roland Gaross(she has always been eliminated in Suzanne Langlen, where as Hingis has a good record there-hmm interesting;)) but anyways this just shows how much power Venus Williams has.

Jennifer Capriati, ho hard feelings after the OZ-i like her too, i expect her to reach the quarters-semis pretty easily, then we'll start talking if she can defend.

If Form should continue, Martina Hingis will reach the Final and this time will learn her lesson big time from OZ. Wouldn't surprise me again if she and the Lioness meets up in the later rounds;)

My early prediction:

Venus Williams vs. Jennifer Capriati

Justine Henin vs. Martina Hingis:)

Tatiana Panova

Outside bet - Mary Pierce.

Feb 19th, 2002, 06:15 AM
I am sorry...did this read "who do you want to win the FO?"

I want to say "thank you" to the few that answered the real question, and add my few cents. I would love to hear more peoples opinions on the real question here, but not many people seem to be able to give an objective opinion.

1. Venus.. not my favorite, but its all in her hands. Can beat anyone on any surface if she has her mind into it and her body holds out. I don't know if people even realize how HARD she works on the court...truly amazing..but dangerous to herself!

2. Capriati....has proved she can play big at the big time. Someone else said it, she'll be around in the semi's and it depends on her state of mind, her conditioning, and her draw!

3. Seles..sorry Hingis fans, but Monica is fixin to peak around May, and I think she is a slight favorite over Hingis at this point in the season, that could change though.

4. Hingis..She'll be there in the Semi's as well, but I wouldn't bet a lot of money on her winning.

5. Clijsters...Is she the real deal?....an semi appearance here will make me a believer!

5. Field.... There are many others that could do it..but any one of them could loose to a hot player on the wrong day. I think the four above have proved in the last 4 months that they can beat a hot player in a big tournament by raising the level of their play even on a bad day. I haven't seen that the others can do the same day in and day out.

A few that I can see making some noise.
1. Stevenson...(given a few more months)
2. Serena (of course)
3. Dokic (I hope she is continues her progression
4. Davenport (if she is healthy)

There will be someone like Bedanova (and I use her as an example) that wil make the quarters or semis...but they won't win.

Feb 19th, 2002, 03:21 PM
I want Kim to win and I think she has a great chance to this year if not, look out for Venus, Jennifer and Justine who I think could also contenders for the title!

Feb 19th, 2002, 03:37 PM
I would love to see Martina finallt collect the only grand slam she's never won! She has a fair chance at it too, after her AO loss to JCap, she'll have to take more chances and wont throw away match points. The Williamses... meh, I really dont think they have a shot

(now dont crawl down my back you fanatics its an OPINION)

at winning it, they havent done anything there to change my mind about it either. Seles could if she doesn face Hingis or Capriati, Kim or Justine could do it with early exits by Venus and Serena, JCap, hmmm not if she faces Hingis or justine.

My Pick:

semis: Martina Hingis vs. Monica Seles
Jennifer Capriati vs. Justine Henin

finals: Martina Hingis vs. Justine Henin(this would be a great match)

Winner: Martina of course:hearts:

I think posts like this everyone just roots for their favorites as if just because they are your favorites they are destined to win. Like if steffi was my favorite should would somehow come out of retirement, snag a wild card, and run through the draw with her little baby son strapped to her back! Go Steffi!

I think the winner will most definitely be in the top ten. That I think we can all agree on. Given that Here is my list of how I think it will go depending on the draw!:

1) Jennifer: the current number one. she did it last year, she can do it again. after defeding the AO she's got confidence to spare.: SEMIS OR FINAL

2) Venus: the soon to be number one. She's won clay titles before so she can play on the surface. With that said I think she can win it if she comes prepared and ready to get down & dirty. After her 1st round exit she will be determined: SEMIS OR FINAL

3) Davenport: the big question mark. if shes there and healthy she might have to deal with lack of match play. given that i see a QF appearance. other than that if she was playing and healthy i give her a shot. she made the sf in 98: QUARTERS

4) Martina: tough call. with all the semis and final appearances you'd think she'd finally nail this, but with the new crop of players no longer intimidated by her and beating her she's 50 50. If she comes mentally prepared her odds are greater, but after that loss to jennifer we'll have to wait and see how she does in a big match final or semi. definite semi or final appearance, unless she gets jen in the quarters: SEMIS OR FINAL

5) kim: she gave jen a run for her money last year and there's no reason she can't do it again. Having said that Kim is still young and learning, plus she's injured: QUARTERS OR SEMIS

6) monica: shes won her before but lately it just hasnt happened. with her new cutey coach that might be changing. if she doesn't burn herself out before i think a SEMIS is possible. if not: QUARTERS

7) henin: with her all court game and beautiful backhand, henin definitely seems poised to shake things up. if she runs into martina i give her the edge, if its kim i think juju is going down. QUARTERS LEANING SEMIS.

8) dokic: i just don't know, yeah she's 8 in the world but in the gs she hasn't done too much. plus shes gotta deal with dear old dad and the media nonsense, and injuries. im thinking: FOURTH ROUND

9) serena: if she's healthy and match tough i think serena stands a good chance. her attitude is an improvement and barring that injury at sydney she was looking good. however lack of tournament play could hurt her, but may is far away.: SEMIS

10) momo: i love momo, but the french crowd just gets all over her. they hurt her fo effort more than help it. given that I expect a FOURTH round exit

Feb 19th, 2002, 04:23 PM
lol@cybelle and the Steffi comment. I'm not picking anyone to win now. It's far too early for an informed, realistic prediction - the clay court season still hasn't started, for God's sake. If pressed, I'd pick Venus or Martina - but even then only cos they've had consistent, excellent results this year. But really, it's TOO EARLY to predict. Which is why anyone who claims that their prediction is somehow the 'right' one is talking out of their arse.

Martina Hingis, I hope :)

Oh, yet again I am attacked by the Williams freaks. Notice when people downplay Hingis' chances here, I realize it's their opinion, no need to argue. But when I give my opinion, Williams' fanatics are jumping down my throat.

How can you be realistic if you never pointed one of the Williams, a favourite to win any tournament??? Not saying that they'll sure win any tournaments they play...

Given that I've been on this board for less than two months, the only tournaments I've predicted a Williams to win are Gold Coast and the Proximus games. So unlike you, I base my predictions on talent, not fanboyism (fangirlism, whatever). I am not afraid to say if my least liked players are going to win a tournament, and quite frankly, it would be embarressing if a Williams sister didn't win Wimbledon. I can safely say I'm much more disinterested than most of the people on this board.

Now, you ASSume that I will pick Martina for every tournament, and for Wimbledon, etc. Please, don't insult me. I know when she is and is not playing well, and I know what tournaments she is capable of winning. Notice my favorites for the French are Monica and Jen. Not Martina. Wow, there I go, always picking my favorite again.

How about we start a bet for the prediction of the final...

My prediction for the finals:

Adriana Gersi def. Nina Dubbers
6-3 6-4

I expect my bet payment to be in 10's and 20's. Thanks.

Who are those two?

I agree with Sartrista, way too early to tell.

At AO, I didn't think Jen could do it, then what happens? All the players who normally give her trouble either don't show up or are on the other side of the draw.

So who really knows what will happen?

But I hope it's either Venus, Serena or Monica ;)

Only time will tell..

The NASDAQ open ends about 2 months before RG starts, and all the top players will be there. While it won't tell us much about who knows how to get their shoes red, it will give us a better insight as to who is in good form heading towards Roland Garros.

I'll save my analysis for then.
