WOMEN'S tennis world No.1 Serena Williams will be sidelined until at least the US Open by a strained left quadriceps, the WTA Tour announced today.
Since defending her Wimbledon title, Williams has withdrawn from all her warm-up events before this year's final Grand Slam, including next week's event in Carson, California.
This means she will make the defence of her US Open crown, starting on August 25 in New York, without having gone through a WTA tune-up match, although practice sessions with her sister Venus could provide an intense workout.
Serena Williams' thigh injury was discovered on Monday after she had an MRI on her left leg in Los Angeles, forcing her to pull out from this week's WTA event in San Diego. She strained her quadriceps last weekend while practicing.
Williams, 21, missed a Stanford, California, event last week because of pain in her left knee not associated with her strained quadriceps.
