Nicole Vaidisova Cheering Thread!

Nicole Vaidisova (CZE), a young 14 year old not yet played any challenger events or wta events but i am certain in the future she will be a very good player.

Nicole has reached the quarter-finals of her current junior event the BMW Junior Open.

1st round she defeated Natalie Tanevska of australia 6-3 6-0.

2nd round nicole defeated Jade Curtis of great britain 6-0 6-0.

in the 3rd round nicole plays german girl Sophie Kettler. sophie moved through both her 1st and 2nd rounds in straight sets 6-4 6-3 and 6-4 6-1 respectively.

nicole won her quarter-final match 6-2 6-0 defeating kettler.

unfortunately nicole lost her semi-final match 3-6 6-2 6-0 to kerber.

Rui Du is nicoles first opponent at the us open this year. nicole is not seeded but she is a dangerous floater for all the favourites.

nicole won 6-2 6-4. her 2nd round opponent will be #14 seed nada pavic of croatia who won her 1st round match 6-0 6-3 so it will be tough for nicole but she can do it!

in the next round Nicole will play the promising youn Michaela Krajicek. it should be a good match.

nicole lost to krajicek in the 3rd round 6-2 6-3. she was up a break and 2-1 in the second set but got broken back straight away. the scoreline is a bit dissapointing but nicole is young and can improve alot.

Nicole is playing the Kentucky Derby - Grade 1 this week. she has a bye first round. 2nd round she will play Sarah Fansler of the USA.

Nicole won her match 6-1 6-1. she will now play Krysty Marcio from the USA who is the #5 seed at this tournament. Nicole is the #10 seed but has a good chance in this match.

unfortunately Nicole lost to emma laine in the final 6-1 6-0. a dissapointing scoreline for our Nicole. but it was her 1st grade 1 final so well done Nicole.

Nicole is playing a challenger this week, her first ever challenger. it's the 10K Plzen. she won 2 matches to qualify and won her first round match in straight sets 6-2 7-6 and now faces Babos the #2 seed.

Nicole Vaidisova made a memorable Australian Open debut and continues to craft a junior career that makes her a player opponents will not forget. The 14-year-old Czech, who has trained at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy since she was 11, was both a singles and doubles finalist at the Australian Open junior championships last month.
In the 18-and-under singles event, which consisted of the best 64 players from around the world, the third-seeded Vaidisova fell to 16-year-old Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-1, 6-4. In the doubles final, Vaidisova and fellow Czech, Veronkia Chvojkova suffered a 7-5, 6-3 setback to Sheng-Nan Sun of China and Yung Jan Chang of Taipei.

Her performance at the Australian Open followed a breakthrough at the Orange Bowl in December when the blonde baseliner became the youngest 18-and-under champion since Anna Kournikova also, a Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy alum. Vaidisova concluded the 2003 season ranked No. 8 in the International Tennis Federation's Girls' 18s rankings.

She began playing at the age of five and cites Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters as her favorite players and aspires to follow in their footsteps as a future No. 1. Asked her ultimate aspirations in tennis, Vaidisova replied: "To become No. 1 in the world after winning Wimbledon."

While she has a long way to go before attaining those lofty ambitions, Vaidisova is close to completing an endorsement contract with Reebok, according to a published report in the SportsBusiness Journal written by Liz Mullen. The SportsBusiness Journal reports Reebook's senior director of global marketing Dianne Hayes, who was the key figure in the company's signing of Venus Williams and Andy Roddick, will personally handle Vaidisova's long-term Reebok deal. IMG represents Vaidisova, who will be featured in a future episode of The Tennis Channel's "No Strings" program.

"Nicole is growing, growing, growing," Bollettieri said. "It is very important that she keeps working hard physically and mentally as well as on her serve and volley technique, if she and her father want her to develop into a more aggressive player. But be patient, a serve and volley game takes time to develop. I, along with my entire staff, am very proud of her accomplishments."

yes nicole and sesil are very talented, alisa kleybanova has also been quite impressive and krajicek hasnt played many challenger/wta events so we will see what she can do later in the year but yeah i would say that nicole and sesil are certainly 2 of the most talented, maybe the 2 most talented in the world.

from when she is 15 she can play 8 events. she should be making slam qualies on her own at the rate she is going which will give her Slam Exempt status (they wont count on her AER)

Indeed, but the field Nicole competed with (and most conquered) at Midland was much stronger than that Sesil defeated with in China.
Sesil's 2 biggest wins were over Zheng and Obziler, while the younger Vaidisova defeated Sucha, Dulko and Voskoboeva, who were all higher ranked than Obziler.

Nicole also dismissed the ''fluke'' tag by following up the strong Midland performance with the win in Columbus. :hearts:

can we please not turn this thread into a battle between players. i like both players, and both are very talented. at this point you cant pick who is more talented (that is if one of them is more talented than the other, which im not even sure of coz they are so talented). anyway, just try and not blow this sort of stuff up. we want this place to be a great place to post so lets not be disrespectful or mean or critisize other players please (i realise at this point no one has but im just saying this before anything might happen).

however i do find it a bit disrespectful for someone to come into another players thread and say how good the other player is and that they have done better than the player whose thread it is, it just shouldnt be done imo.

Bradenton, FL - 2 February 2004 - 14-year-old Nicole Vaidisova, who has trained at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy since age eleven, was the singles and doubles runner-up at the 2004 Australian Open Junior Championships held in Melbourne, Australia. In the 18-and-under singles event, which consisted of the best 64 players from around the world, Vaidisova, seeded third, lost in the final to Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-1, 6-4. In the doubles final, Vaidisova and fellow Czech, Veronkia Chvojkova, lost a tough match to Sheng-Nan Sun of China and Yung Jan Chang of Taipei 7-5, 6-3. This was Vaidisova?s first trip to Australia?s junior Grand Slam, one of the most prestigious ITF events of the year.

Vaidisova is also the current reigning 14-and-under female World Champion as well as the Girls 18 Orange Bowl Singles Champion. By winning the Orange Bowl title in Key Biscayne, she became the youngest 18-and-under champion since Anna Kournikova also, a Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy alum. Off the court, Vaidisova will be appearing in a "day in the life of" special called "No Strings" on the Tennis Channel (airing date not yet set).

World Tennis Cup of Columbus - Columbus, Ohio

Playing in only the third pro event of her career, 14-year-old Nicole Vaidisova won her second professional title, defeating Shuai Peng of China, 7-6 (2), 7-5, Sunday in the final of the $25,000 World Tennis Cup of Columbus, Ohio. Vaidisova, currently ranked fifth on the ITF World Junior Rankings, did not drop a set in any of her matches during the week and upset one player, No. 6 Sandra Kloesel of Germany, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round. Vaidisova, who previously won the $10,000 ITF Circuit event in Pitzen, Czech Republic, in October, was also a finalist last week at the $75,000 event in Midland, Mich., and has now won nine of her last 10 matches on the USTA Pro Circuit.

It might be worth keeping an eye on Nicole Vaidisova. Currently ranked fifth on the ITF World Junior Rankings, the 14-year-old phenom from the Czech Republic has taken the junior tennis world by storm and is now beginning to make a name for herself at the professional level, as well.

Playing in only the second pro event of her career last week at the $75,000 Dow Corning Tennis Classic in Midland, Mich., Vaidisova advanced all the way to the final, where she lost to 29-year-old veteran and No. 2 seed Jill Craybas, 6-2, 6-4. The 6' 0" teenager knocked off two seeded players en route to the final, including top seed Martina Sucha of Slovakia, whom she crushed, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals, and No. 6 Gisela Dulko of Argentina, whom she beat, 6-4, 6-2, in the semis. She also was given the tournament?s Most Promising Newcomer Award during the week.

On the junior circuit, Vaidisova has started 2004 off strong, reaching the singles and doubles finals at last month?s Australian Open Junior Championships and winning the doubles title and advancing to the singles quarterfinals at the Uncle Toby's Australian Hardcourt Championships.

In 2003, she became the youngest girls' 18 Orange Bowl singles champion since Anna Kournikova won the title in 1995 at the age of 14 years, 6 months. She also captured the doubles title and reached the singles quarterfinals at the Eddie Herr International, finished runner-up in singles at the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby, and reached the semifinals of the BMW Junior Open, the LTA International Junior Tennis Championships - Roehampton, and the 39th Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships.

It's great to see Nicole incorporating serve and volleying into her game, as It's suitable to her frame but also to the tour - Lisa can't stay around forever. ;)

Congrats to Nicole! But Kimmie's Boy, do you think she will still want to play 2 25K events after she turns 15? As I understand it (I could be wrong) they would count against her 8 events allowed after 15 -- and her ranking is getting high enough that I think she could make WTA level events, particularly if she scores some points at the grand slams.

And she still has three ITF events she can play before her birthday (4/23) -- I wonder if she will be able to do that. She could take a wild card to Orange, or one of the green clay challengers.

As the rules state 14 yr olds can only play 4 events greater than $10k.
Nicole luckily is just about a month away from being 15 so greater freedom.

(i) Between the date of a player’s fourteenth (14th) birthday and the day before her fifteenth (15th) birthday a player may participate in a maximum of seven (7) ITF Women’s Circuit Tournaments, only four (4) of which may be for prize money of greater than $10,000, plus regional Fed Cup Qualifying, and one (1) exhibition/non-Tour event. The number of ITF Women’s Circuit Tournaments a player may participate in will be reduced if the player receives a Wild Card into or accepts a Feed-Up position into a WTA Tour Tier I-V Tournament as provided in Sections 1(b)(ii) and 3.

(ii) These players are permitted to receive a maximum of three (3) Wild Cards as follows: one (1) Wild Card into the Main Draw or Qualifying Draw of any WTA Tour Tier I-V or ITF Women’s Circuit Tournament, and two (2) Wild

Cards into the Main Draw or Qualifying Draw of any ITF Women’s Circuit Tournaments.

(iii) These players may earn a WTA Tour ranking; however, these players may not participate in WTA Tour Tournaments, including the Championships, by direct ranking acceptance. These players may not participate in professional Grand Slam events.

Ah I see. So she could only play in 1 more (over 10K) challenger. Thanks. And it sounds like no Miami -- or perhaps that's not clear.

not necessarily, rules say the # of ITF tourns will be reduced if she gets a feed-up or a WC into a WTA event. (well she got one for Acapulco), she's not likely to play $10k's now ranked 200ish.

Nicole Vaidisova

There have been very few 14-year-olds in recent years to play a WTA Tour tournament, let alone win a match. Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis both made Tour finals as 14-year-olds, while more recently, Maria Sharapova and Viktoriya Kutuzova have won Tour main draw matches before turning 15.

Add another player to the list. Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic will turn 15 on April 23, but she’s already reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinal and won two of the first three ITF Women’s Circuit events she’s ever competed in.

It was in fact the ITF Circuit tournament Nicole didn’t win that gave her entry into last week’s Abierto Mexicano Telefonica MoviStar in Acapulco.

She fell to American Jill Craybas in the final of a $75,000 event in Midland, Michigan. When Craybas turned down a direct entry into Acapulco, Vaidisova gladly accepted the offer.

Having debuted on the WTA Singles Rankings at No.264 last Monday, Nicole player her first Tour match in Acapulco the following day. Her opponent, Slovak Lubomira Kurhajcova, retired during the first set tie-break with an abdominal strain, setting up a clash with No.2 seed Shinobu Asagoe.

Playing just her 17th professional singles match, and second at Tour level, Vaidisova scored an impressive 62 63 win over the world No.48, easily her career-best result to date.

“I was surprised the match was so easy,” said Vaidisova after the match. “I was so happy to have the chance to come to this tournament because it was my first opportunity to play a WTA Tour event. I am fortunate to start at 14 because I’d to have a long career. I want to come back next year for sure.”

Despite falling to eventual runner-up Flavia Pennetta in the quarterfinals, her results in Mexico were good enough to see her rise to No.205 on this week’s rankings.

Currently ranked No.5 on the ITF Girls’ Singles Rankings, Nicole won the prestigious Orange Bowl last December and was runner-up at the recent Australian Open juniors (in both singles and doubles).

Already a towering six-foot tall, Vaidisova not surprisingly lists her serve as her biggest weapon. She describes her game as an all-court game, with hardcourt her favorite surface. Born in Nurnberg, Germany, Nicole lives with her family in Prague.

How did you get started playing tennis?
My mother got me started playing when I was six years old at a local club in Nurnberg, when we were still living in Germany. Since then I’ve also trained at the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida.

Do you have any brothers and sisters? Does anyone in your family play tennis as well?
I have two younger brothers, Oliver, who is nine years old, and Toby, who is one. My dad’s the only other member of my family who plays tennis. He also travels with me to my tournaments.

What types of things do you like doing in your spare time?
I like to follow the NHL (ice hockey) and some other sports. I also like reading, going to the movies, doing yoga and bike riding. I like listening to pop music—Madonna is my favorite artist.

What languages do you speak?
I speak Czech, German and English, and right now I’m also studying French.

Even though you’ve started playing professional events, your still one of the world’s top juniors. What have been some of the highlights so far?
There have been a few. The first one was playing the US Open juniors for the first time in 2002. The others have been winning the Orange Bowl last year and reaching the final of the Australian Open this year.

What’s been your favorite city you’ve been to?
I’d have to say New York City. I’ve been there a few times now playing tournaments and I love it. There’s always so much going on, so much action!

What are your favorite and least favorite things about playing tennis?
I really like the traveling and meeting people. The atmosphere at tournaments is really nice, too. Even though I like traveling around the world, my least favorite thing is to be away from home. I miss my family and friends when I’m gone for a while.

Which tennis player do you most admire, and why?
I’d have to say Steffi Graf. She worked so hard to become one of the best ever, and obviously her results were amazing.

nicole lost 2-6 4-6 to maret ani. not a good loss at all. but i'm guessing nicole hasnt played much on grass and that could of effected how she played as she is inexperienced on the surface (then again i could be wrong).

She should have won this. I think that she is a top 100 player when she is on, but she does not have much expirience. She just needs to go far again in another tourney and get some confidence.

I watched Nicole at Wimbledon today in the Girls doubles semi finals. I decided to watch out for her because I saw she was the Number 2 seed in the Girls singles draw. Only now I've done a bit of research I realise that firstly she is only 15 (so shocked, I would have said older) and secondly that she has played womens tour tennis already. What is anyones feelings about how successful she could become?

Fifteen-Year-Old Captures Vancouver Title

VANCOUVER, Canada - In just her third WTA Tour main draw event, 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic has captured her first WTA Tour singles title - accomplishing the rare feat on Sunday at the Odlum Brown Vancouver Women's Open.

Vaidisova, playing the Canadian event as a qualifier, conquered the Tier V event in Vancouver in impressive fashion and finished off her week with a 26 64 62 victory against No.4 seed Laura Granville in the championship match.

"I feel great," Vaidisova said. "It was my goal coming from qualies to try to win this tournament. It just really feels great because I did my best."

Vaidisova, who made her debut on the WTA Tour back in February where she reached the quarterfinals, had a breakout performance this week in Vancouver. This week, she survived three qualifying matches to reach the main draw and won her main draw opener against Abigail Spears.

From there, Vaidisova faced three seeded players to reach the final - winning in three sets against No.5 Marissa Irvin, in straight sets against No.2 Milagros Sequera and in three against No.3 Alina Jidkova.

At just 15, Vaidisova is the youngest player to win a title on Tour this year. She is also just the second qualifier to win a title this year, joining Iveta Benesova, who won Acapulco as a qualifier earlier this year.

And with a ranking of No.174, Vaidisova is also the lowest ranked player to win a singles title in 2004.

"My rank is going to jump a lot and I'll be able to get into higher events so I'm happy about that," Vaidisova said.

Since turning pro in October of last year, Vaidisova has accumulated a solid 24-5 record, which now includes a WTA Tour title, another Tour quarterfinal and two other ITF titles.

Competing in her first WTA Tour final on the day when the competition at the Olympic Games in Athens is taking off, Vaidisova has already set a goal for a few years from now - to play for the Czech Republic at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

"I don't know how our players did today, but I want to be on the 2008 team that goes to China, that's for sure," Vaidisova said.

Vaidisova was one of two 15-year-olds that had impressive play in Vancouver. Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva, also a qualifier, made it through to the quarterfinals before falling to Pin.

The trip to the Canada final ended a miserable stretch of tennis for Granville. Before stepping foot in Vancouver, the American had dropped 11 of her last 12 matches including six straight. Her record had slumped to 9-16 and Granville's confidence on court was clearing lacking that which helped her earlier in the year to a semifinal at Memphis and fourth round at Indian Wells.

But this week, Granville appeared to be a completely different player. She surged past Samantha Reeves in the first round and Bethanie Mattek in the second. She overcame a one set deficit to defeat No.8 seed Lindsay Lee-Waters and held her ground in a three-set victory against Camille Pin.

A title in Vancouver would have been the biggest win for the Chicago native since she turned pro back in 2001. Prior to turning pro, Granville won back-to-back NCAA singles titles for Stanford University.

Well done Nicole. :) It's good that she got her first WTA Tour title out of the way while she's so young.

But is she ready to take on the likes of Maria Sharapova on the WTA Tour? I think so. And their matches will be very exciting hard hitting affairs. :D
