Is there any African tennis players on the WTA tour? They do pretty well in Fed Cup!

Amanda Coetzer from S.Africa

Amanda Coetzer from S.Africa

Also Dally Radriantefy from Madagascar (top 100)
Selima Sfar from Tunisia (top 200)
South Africa has several other players too, but not indigenous players as far as I'm aware. Tennis will most likely remain a sport for whites only for a long time yet unfortuantly in S. Africa.

You're right Johno, I think all the current South African world ranked players are white. The divide still runs across other sports too. Rugby & cricket are almost all white players (to a lesser extent in rugby) and supporters, whilst in contrast the football team is dominated by black players.

The other African world ranked players

- Algeria:

Feriel Esseghir & Sana Ben Salah

- Egypt
Yomna Farid, Amani Khalifa, Heidi El Tabakh, Noha Mohsen and Magy Aziz

- Madagascar

Dally Randriantefy has also got a world-ranked sister Natacha

- Morocco

Bahia Mouhtassine (top 200), Meryem Haddad, Habiba Ifrakh, Zineb El Ouazzani and Hanane Toumi. Also several top mens players like El Aynaoui

- Nigeria

Femi Odeyemi Musa & Fatima Abinu

- South Africa
As well as Coetzer, Natalie Grandin & Chanelle Scheepers are both top 200. Also, Nicole Rencken, Liezel Huber (formerly top 100, now outside the top 500), Jessica Steck, Kim Grant, Michelle Snyman, Surina De Beer, Joanette Kruger and Anca Anastasiu

I think part of the problem is that there's so few world ranking tournaments (adult or junior) in Africa, and potential players from the poorer parts of Africa will not be able to afford to travel to Europe or the USA.

wasnt there a girl who walked from challengers
to challengers awhile back then,
anyone remembers who that is?

Kim Grant (S.Africa) has done quite well in doubles over the past couple of years.

Surina De Beer has had injury problems but has been on form of late. She has won two British LTA tournaments within the past month, and seems to enjoy it.

What's happened to Zimbabwe in the Fed Cup? I have a bit of a soft spot for them (because I've got relatives there) and I couldn't see Zimbabwe in any draws for the Fed Cup.

What happened with two other African players? I know that Feriel Esseghir of Algeria was a top 200 potential, but suddenly she dropped out. Besides that...wat happened to Egyptian player Amani Khalifa? She wasn´t a big potential, but sure a strong Egyptian Fed Cup player.

Does anyone else think that what's happened with the Zimbabwe cricket team (for those who don't know, cricket is a sport played by countries part of the British Commonwealth, and is kind of like baseball) will happen to tennis. For those who don't know, President Mugabe is tied up with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, and players have had to retire because of their colour, or standing up to the ZCU over selection process, because coloured players are being picked because of their colour. Also just yesterday, 12 white cricket players were axed from the team, meaning Zimbabwe will field a side with no whites in it. Go to www.cricinfo.com (http://www.cricinfo.com) for more details on that if you're interested. I know the Davis Cup squad has two white players and two coloured. Is there a policy there? If not, do you think that what's happened with the cricket team, will spread to both Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams?

Liezel Huber (formerly top 100, now outside the top 500)

But she focuses on doubles and does very well doing so ;)

She wasn´t a big potential, but sure a strong Egyptian Fed Cup player.

I personally expect a lot from Heidi El Tabakh in the future.. She's now ranked #750 or something, but she's got the potential to make it.

has anyone heard anything about amanda coetzer - she has only played two matches this year and is not in the fed cup team. Her rank is sliding. Is this the end. I dont think she would play if she has to play qualifying?????????

There are some players from Ghana who always commit to british 10ks or 25ks and then withdraw at the last minute even though they are accepted....

and there is Samia Mehjaadi of Algeria :D
There are also many Nigerians who play in Nigerian 10ks .

In terms of an indigenous player from South Africa, sure the sport is white dominated, but I do recall a player named Tsitsi, but I can't remember if she is from Zimbabwe or South Africa. I think Zimbabwe.

that was Tsitsi Masviba from Zimbabe was a top 100 junior player, played some Challengers in the States but retired soon

now there are two players Fadzai Masiyazi and Fadzai Mawisire from Zimbabe who do have potential

From Madagascar Seheno Razafindramaso who played some Challengers this year and Aina Rafalomanantsiatosika but had a ranking two years ago and is now on several acceptance lists

from Nigeria Femi Odeyem-Musa has disappeared

maybe Hannah Eke, Fatima Abinu and Osaro Amadin do have a chance to get a ranking
and of course Clara Udofa but she hasnt played in a year but already had a career high of 550 6 years ago

a read a report about two 14 year old girls from Kenia who are very ambitious getting pros

I have high hopes for Tapiwa Marobela of Botswana. She is in the top 100 in juniors and is the only Fed Cup player to beat other people in singles.

I think she can do quite well on senior tour if she gets a chance, and she is 'indigenous' too.

Xian
Nov 6th, 2004, 10:00 AM
would be great to see Marobela in singles once but compared to Masviba for instance she isnt that talented and Masviba couldnt hardly win matches on po tour.

Marobela, Masiyazi, Mawisire and Razafindramaso are at the moment at the same level, but Razafindramaso seems to be the best so far

Someone know if Heidi El-Tabakh is living in Canada or something like that. I don't know if I'm crazy but she played the Junior Canadian Championshiph under 18 normally reserved to canadian players... that's weird

Brilliant!

Its a shame African tennis is so under rated and there arnt many if any (Exept Madagaskar) in the t100. South Africa should have many more up there as it has the talent and the facilities, its just tennis there is viewed to much as a social game and not taken seriously enough!

Liezel huber also deserves a good play mention with her recent doubles with Cara. Not as good as last year for Liezel but nonetheless a brilliant close game.

Aanstaande jaar Liezel en jy sal in jy plek hooplik met Cara :D  :yeah:

Has Heidi El Tabakh changed from Egypt to Canada? The ITF Tournements she has entered for May 30/2005 are under Canada? Let's hope so, she would be a great addition to canadian tennis!!

QR1: Msiska vs. Diaz Mares

another african player (from Zambia this time) trying her luck, but i think it's tough to go to america/mexico to try and play qualies, the draws are quite tough there. especially at the age of 27 for her first pro tennis match. anyway, gl and enjoy it.

btw, Lesedi Jacobs (NAM) played some junior tournaments in italy in the last weeks. she hasn't had very good results. hope she'll get some nice wins soon. she's going to play at the G1 in Offenbach the week after next week. maybe i'll find the time to go there.
