19 players (the ones in bold) have been able to improve their values thanks to the Australian Open. :)

23 players are in the Tokyo main draw, though 5 have already lost and Hingis has already scored an Ace and can't get any better than that. :)

Thank you, good luck! :wavey:

This was Dokic's first tournament; as the second seed with a first round bye, just entering the tournament was worth a 6 for Jelena.
Ironically, this score forced many posters to renounce to some spare cards with higher values.

Out of the 15 players who have already lost, Jelena Dokic is the only player who has been able to improve her score in Tokyo.

Let’s take a look at the chances of the last 8. :)

Martina Hingis has already scored the highest possible value. :)

Tamarine Tanasugarn is already a K and so must win the tournament.

Anna Kournikova and Monica Seles will better their values reaching the final. :)

The winner of Sandrine Testud vs Silvia Farina-Elia will get better, but no improvement for this quarterfinal’s loser. :)

Surely a higher value for Anne Kremer, who will score at least a 9 even if she loses in the quarterfinals, while Alexandra Stevenson needs a win to go beyond her 10. :)

The winner of Anna Kournikova vs Monica Seles will better her value with at least a K, while the loser will score a J. :)

Silvia Farina-Elia will surely have an improvement, she is one of the best spare cards now as she’ll score at least a Q for her semifinal. :)

It’s Martina Hingis vs Monica Seles in the final. :)

The winner will score an Ace, the runner-up a King. Martina has already scored an Ace in Sydney, so the final in Tokyo will decide only Monica’s updated value. :)

Besides Jelena Dokic, who hadn’t played a tournament yet, only three players have been able to improve their values thanks to a brilliant performance in Tokyo. :)

Congratulations to Monica, Silvia, Anne and Jelena! :D

Paris will be the last tournament of the first leg and as soon as the main draw is released, more than half of these values will be definitive. I'll post a new thread with the final results as the tournament progresses day by day. :)

Thank you, good luck! :wavey:

Doc, just testing to see if I'm beginning to understand this...would my current hand be K/A/5/Q/2?

Buttercup: no

I suppose there's still a little bit of confusion about the spare cards, I'll be back with more details for both. :)

DoctorG

Adrian,
your hand is a little bit better than you expected:

Henin / Hingis / Tulyaganova / S.Williams / Zuluaga
K / A / 5 / Q / -

Your spare cards:
Sugiyama / Molik
10 / 2

Ai Sugiyama is the spare card with the higher value, so it’s her to replace Zuluaga in your hand:

Hingis / Henin / S.Williams / Sugiyama / Tulyaganova
A / K / Q / 10 / 5

Unluckily at this moment you don’t score any particular combination and that probably won’t be enough to qualify.

DoctorG

Buttercup,
your hand is quite good, you’ll probably have a brilliant performance in this round, but it looks like this:

Davenport / Henin / Hingis / Shaughnessy / V.Williams
- / K / A / K / A

Your spare cards:
Dechy / Raymond
7 / 6

Nathalie Dechy replaces Lindsay Davenport, and so:

Hingis / V.Williams / Henin / Shaughnessy / Dechy
A / A / K / K / 7

This combination is named “two pairs”, it consists of two distinct couples of two cards with the same value, and it’s not a bad result at all. :)

Adrian
Feb 4th, 2002, 03:02 PM
So if I can get another A, K, Q or 10, then I'll have a pair?

If I can score a J, Well things would be pretty sweet ;)

DoctorG
Feb 4th, 2002, 03:02 PM
Of course there's still a week to try to improve. If you have any other question, I'll be glad to answer. :)

Thank you, good luck! :wavey:

Adrian,
yes, that's correct. :) Iroda is playing in Paris, isn't she? A semifinal in the bottom half of the draw would mean a straight for you, and that kind of result would probably be enough to win the whole tournament. :)
