PAW Tournaments #73 and #74 completed!

SAN DIEGO:
Winner: Grice
Runner-up: Daja
3rd: cariosity

Summary

The Acura Classic proved to be a tournament where the lower ranked PAW newcomers announced their presence in a big tournament. Whilst #114 - broncosven lead early, he had to settle for fifth place behind # - 159 Daja (playing only his/her 2nd tournament!!!), #81 - cariosity and eventual champion #16 - Grice, whom all overtook with more picks to spare.

SOPOT:
Winner: paellapan
Runner-up: marcobarella
3rd: ULTIMA PALLINA

Summary :

#111 ranked paellapan won his/her first title and becomes the lowest ranked PAW player at the moment to hold a title, after a strong performance in Sopot. Having to contend with the sibling duo of marcobarella/ULTIMA PALLINA meant that paellapan only escaped a close 13 points from 2nd position. In what was a spectacular PAW debut - unranked Fidel Castrato finished 4th, just ahead of raquel, Pintaled and firefly_ac.

PAW Tournaments #75 and #76 completed!

LOS ANGELES:
Winner: Mashy
Runner-up: petroniao
3rd: wateva

Summary

In a week captivated with two big 200 point gains - the first time in any PAW tournament, those who took longshots were rewarded. #89 - wateva was an early leader but eventually settled for 3rd position, behind #83 - petroniao (2nd) and a first time titler - #97 Mashy.

HELSINKI:
Winner: speedster_
Runner-up: marcobarella
3rd: Rtael / Nir

Summary :

Unranked Nir continued to follow a habit of his/her fellow first timers by opting a good performance - finishing 3rd. Early leader Rtael eventually settled for equal 3rd place behind #50 - marcobarella - who finished 2nd yet again - continuing his strongly consistent performances on clay this year. speedster_ was a much deserved winner, this newcomer just started playing PAW this year and is already ranked #23 and will be in contention for the newcomer player of the year when the Annual PAW Awards Voting commences.

PAW Tournament #77 completed!

TORONTO

Winner: Grice
Runner-up: Pintaled
3rd: ghosts

Summary

The solid form of now 10th ranked Grice continued. The San Diego winner, continued his/her good form by upstaging 67 contestants in the biggest tournament since Wimbledon. Grice won with a series of thoughtful picks as illustrated by his/her 12 correct picks and only 4 incorrect ones. 50th ranked Pintaled jumped to #35 thanks to a solid week, where he/she gained an early lead. The form of #20 ranked ghosts continued, as he/she gained 3rd position, ahead of the equal 4th triplet of impressive newcomer - Nir, #40 Lee-Waters' Boy and #76 Je_ne_sais_quoi. One of the stories of the tournament was polishprodigy's performance, despite suffering from a power blackout, polishprodigy still was able to manifest his/her best result to date - 7th place in a Tier 1 Tournament, with only 11 picks. All players must be congratulated on another successful week.

NEW HAVEN

Winner: Nir
Runner-ups: zorgzamesnip and firefly_ac

Summary

#93 ranked Nir who moves up to #61 this week, has made the most successful trio of tournaments of any debut of a PAW player. 3rd place in Helsinki, 4th place in Toronto and now first place in New Haven is quite an outstanding accomplishment. Belgium's zorgzamesnip achieved his/her best tournament to date, coming in equal 2nd with firefly_ac, who equalled his/her best performance of a runner-up (Birmingham). There were also good performances by World No 1 Wojtek (5th), #10 - petosp (4th) and paellapan (4th).

PAW Tournament #79 completed!

FLUSHING MEADOWS

Winner: yucky
Runner-up: polishprodigy
3rd: YoungProfessor

Summary

Congrats to #128 ranked yucky who against all odds won the championships after just a few tournaments of PAW. Whilst the Australian and French Open champions were in the top 20, the last two grand slams have been unpredictable. yucky won with a solid 19:7 win/loss ratio, in which he/she combined a total of 211 points. The runner-up was polishprodigy, another newcomer who has shown great promise since Wimbledon. polishprodigy led early, but made a risk in his/her "Petrova over Davenport" pick, which could have cost him a spot of the title. Nevertheless, this was polishprodigy's best tournament to date.

YoungProfessor performed well to finish 3rd after a quiet hardcourt season but more eyebrow raising was Nir's super SF performance. In only 4 tournaments, Nir is now ranked #39, he/she is destined for superstar status in the future. danielrosario had great pressure to defend his runner-up from last year but did well by gaining 5th spot. ntohir finished 6th, an outstanding achievement in a Grand Slam. Altogether it may have been a long 2 weeks with plenty of controversies but this perhaps marked the start of a new PAW beginning. Thank you for all 80 contestents, this is the most event PAW players for one ever single tournment for PAW (even during Simon's time), so congrats must go to all the players.

Winner: SpikeyAidanm
Runner-up: azza

Summary

Congrats to #7 ranked SpikeyAidanm on his first title. After many consistent performances, SpikeyAidanm was due for a title which finally occurred in Bali. A great performance by azza saw him sneak in second spot and moves into the top 90 this week. There was also good performances by #10 Buitenzorg, US Open quarter-finalist - K&J Fan and defending champ Wojtek. obatafan made a positive debut, ending up 4th.

SHANGHAI:

Winners: Pintaled & wateva
Runner-ups: danielrosario (3) & saab95 (WC)

Summary

Ranked 63rd and 24th respectively, wateva and Pintaled won their first titles in what was the first "joint" title of 2003. Both won with 10 correct predictions and 3 incorrect ones. In equal 3rd was first-timer -saab95 and 3rd seed danielrosario, who moves back into the top 4 this week. #121 Jarrett hadn't played for a while but proved he hadn't lost his form, by finishing a respectable 6th, behind the consistent speedster_ and ahead of petosp.

COLUMBUS 50K

Winner: dario88
Runner-up: marcobarella
3rd: aussiefan83

Summary :

With only six picks, dario88 claimed a remarkable truimph at PAW's second challenger, on debut. dario88 picked all six of his valid Paws correctly to oust top seed marcobarella for top honours. aussiefan83 could have won if he/she used their last three picks, yet the same could have been said for iloveSharapova (6th) and croat123 (7th).

LEIPZIG:

Winner: speedster_
Runner-up: saab95
3rd: sandg (2)

Summary

In what was one of the most fierce and competitve PAW tournaments in a while, the top spot was not decided until the final PAW. With ntohir on the verge of his first PAW title, he decided to "play it safe" by picking Henin-Hardenne, on the other hand speedster_ who is always willing to take risks, picked Myskina and this altered his position from fourth to first. saab95 led early, showing his/her debut runner-up position in Shanghai was no fluke. Sandg (2), one of the most improved players of the year, finished in 3rd, ahead of the New Zealander YoungProfessor, the famous Wojtek and the talented ntohir.

MOSCOW:

Winner: butch
Runner-up: silent140
3rd: K&J fan

Summary

Warsaw winner butch won his/her second title, with a comprehensive win in the tier 1 tournament - the Kremlin Cup. American silent140 had his/her best tournament since Stanford, finishing in 2nd after K&J fan surrended his/her chance for the runner-up spot by picking Pistolesi over Myskina as their PAW 13. There was also welcoming news for Elisse (finishing equal 5th), who hadn't had a strong tournament in awhile, the same could be said for bbypk (6), who performed the best out of what was a poor tournament for the seeds.

TOKYO (JAPAN OPEN)

Winner: köj-è
Runner-up: bionic71 (5)
3rd: Je_ne_sais_quoi & efss

Summary :

Indonesia's köj-è claimed his second title of the year, only needing 12 solid picks to hold aloft the Tokyo trophy. He finished ahead of bionic71, who ended his slump with a runner-up finish. Playing in only his/her second tournament, Indonesia's efss made encouraging strives to finish 3rd along with the in form Je_ne_sais_quoi. Debtuant AlexSydney had the chance to become the first player to win a title on debut since dario88 last month, but this opportunity collapsed after he picked his last 2 PAWS wrongly. Albandian paepallan, the Sopot winner, finished in 6th spot.

PAW Tournaments #86 and #87 completed!

FILDERSTADT:

Winners: paellapan & petosp
3rd: aimerent

Summary

The solid form of zorgzamesnip continued, finishing equal 4th to establish what has been a very consistent last few months for the Belgian. Similarly, paellapan, who has rose in leaps and bounds this year had another stunning tournament, sharing the title (his/her second one) with 7th seeded petosp, who proved that it sometimes is best to post your Paws after the first day. US Open winner yucky proved that his/her picking was no fluke, with a solid 7th place finish. In fact the final placings were not determined until the final, with the majority picking Henin-Hardenne over Clijsters. Debutant Nathan27 finish in equal 4th, alongside Croat Rtael (the French Open runner-up). It was another "lousy" tournament for the top few seeds, only emphasising the sheer compedition for those top 8 spots in the race to LA.

TASHKENT

Winner: marcobarella
Runner-up: speedster_
3rd: aussiefan83

Summary :

Congratulations to marcobarella on his first singles title. Yet the joy of truimph did not come as easy as it may seemed. The title was determined through the final pick of Ruano-Pascual vs Obata, playing with his instincts Marco picked Ruano, whilst other contenders aussiefan83 and Frongie opted for Obata. speedtser_ had another strong tournament, putting him/her into contention for the LA, after his/her debut in Estoril this year. Marcobarella moved a step closer to the top 20. Top seeded Jakub, only completed 7 picks and finished 15th.

PAW Tournament #88 completed!

ZURICH:

Winner: Duleml
Runner-up: ntohir
3rd: SpikeyAidanm (3)

Summary

A big round of congratulations is deserved to newcomer Duleml, who became the lowest ever ranked PAW player to claim a Tier 1 title (at 142). Duleml's victory was largely due to the optimism he displayed towards his compatriot Jelena Dokic, who surprised all players by her final appearance. Duleml picked pivotal matches namely Dokic over Schnyder and Dokic over Clijsters, to assure him/her of a comprehensive 18 point victory.

In second place was ntohir, who made a late surge with thoughtful picks after a rusty start. Early leader SpikeyAidanm (3) was looking to win his second title of the year, but was overtaken after only scoring one of three correct picks in the quarter-final round. Scottish obatafan had his best tournament to date finishing in 5th, behind the recently consistent mypapa_je. Defending champ jindrich77 finished a poor 55th, putting him solidly out of contention for the race to LA.

LINZ

Winner: twight6
Runner-up: caramel
3rd: oren987 & bionic71

Summary

Early leader bionic71 put himself in thorough contention for the PAW comeback player of the year and also for entry into the PAW LA Champs after four solid performances after a quiet middle half of the year. The Aussie finished runner-up in Tokyo, equal 6th in Tashkent, 10th in Zurich and in Linz, he shared 3rd place with oren987 of Israel - who also had his/her first noteworthy tournament in a while. There were no major upsets during the week and the most a PAW player could gain in a single match was a mere 13 points (Schnyder over Myskina). The Polish duo of Jakub and Wojtek both had exceptional tournaments, finishing in 5th and 6th position respectively, however neither has able to win a title since Wojtek's Vienna truimph.

A loud applause is deserved to #101 ranked American twight6. He won with a series of thoughtful picks and had the courage to pick "Sugiyama over Petrova" in order to give him a chance at a title, rather than just coming in equal 6th. Another American - caramel, who always strives on conservative picks had a memorable tournament, placing 2nd. Debutant VenusSerena#1 Fan looked to be heading towards a title at debut by holding a 8-0 win-loss PAW match record heading into the QF, but he/she picked four of their last five picks incorrectly, thus altering their position to a solid 12th. US Open winner yucky shared 7th spot with Aussie-Swiss switz.

LUXEMBOURG

Winner: speedster_
Runner-up: butch
3rd: azza

Summary

The top nine positions of PAW Luxembourg were filled by 2003 newcomers, ie ~ PAW players who debuted during 2003. Playing in his/her 4th tournament, ns_Henin reached the SF by finishing a respectable fourth. Formerly known as alextreiber03, CrHuAbNiDnA had a commendable tournament finishing in 5th place with only 11 picks. This was ahead of top seeded SpikeyAidanm (6th), who reached his 13th top 8 finish in 2003.

South African butch has won two titles this year and was close to truimphing yet again by finishing runner-up to now world number #6 - speedster by a close 4 points. Both these newcomers have pretty much cemented their positions in the LA Championships after terrific seasons. 80th ranked azza gained 3rd spot, his best performance since Bali.

PHILADELPHIA

Winner: canuckfan
Runner-up: matija-seles
3rd: sandg

Summary

Czech Republic's jindrich77 found some of his/her lost end of 2002 form, where he embassed two straight titles in Zurich and Linz. jindrich77 finished a solid 8th, but a lacklustre year has meant he/she will miss out on the LA Championships. This really did set the tone for the tournament, mainly surprises climbed up the ranks. Debutant canuckfan claimed a remarkable truimph, becoming the first PAW player in 2003 to claim a title on debut. Poland's matija-seles had his/her best week since Moscow, embassing a 12-1 win loss ratio, and a solid 86 points.

World No #4 sandg (who moves to #3 this week), had his best tournament since Leipzig, in fact equalling his efforts there by finishing 3rd. This strong tournament and hence good form gives sandg every reason to feel confident heading to the LA Champs this week. Another debutant huge lina k fan adapted to the conditions of the game beautifully, finishing in equal 4th with fellow newcomer martaGo!!!
South Africa's butch had another solid #9 finish, but perhaps would have done better if he/she had used their remaining pick. Similarly oren987, who finished equal 6th, could have reached a second consecutive semi-final, if he/she had done so also.

QUEBEC CITY

Winner: ntohir
Runner-up: ns_Henin
3rd: speedster_ & broncosven

Summary

Indonesians dominated the Quebec City tournament, and occupied 4 of the top 5 spots. With top honours was newcomer ntohir, who has had a very consistent 4th quarter - having also finished 5th in Leipzig and Runner-up in Zurich. Yet ntohir had the contend with the impressive form of ns_Henin, who led early, and looked to win a title in his/her 5th tournament. However ntohir gained the lead by one points, smartly picking 2 correct quarter-finals.

In equal 3rd, the always consistent speedster_ and Aussie broncosven. köj-è was 5th, in front of the Aussie duo of SpikeyAidanm (6th) and AlexSydney (7th).

LOS ANGELES (Year-End Tour CHampionships)

Winner: butch
Runner-up: SpikeyAidanm (2)
3rd: petosp

Summary

Defending champion WTA Handicapper failed to defend his title, and as a result slid to 13th in the year-end rankings. WTA Handicapper has a habit of playing with his conscience and usually saving the rest of his picks for the latter stages of the tournaments. Whilst since the scoring points and number of picks were minimal in this tournament, it was a tournament that could change dramatically by just a few picks. Fortunately for butch, the 2003 champion and one of the most improved players of 2003 (with 3 big titles), he took advantage of this. After seeing second seeded SpikeyAidanm pick his last two PAWs incorrectly, butch opted for the save “Clijsters over Capriati” and won the championships by just one mere point. Nevertheless whilst the South African made a pick jump to number #7, it was SpikeyAidanm’s rise to World No 1 which made headlines. Wojtek, who had been number one since Indian Wells this year, finally lost hold on his crown. Moments, later the Polish humanitarian announced his retirement, the first PAW player to formally do so. Wojtek can only look forward to being possibly inducted in the PAW Hall of Fame…

5th seeded petosp will always look upon his 2003 year as one which signifies some of the most heartwarming yet heartwrenching moments. A semi-final appearance thanks to his “Mauresmo over Henin” pick proved pivotal. The Venezuluan finsiehd ahead of Buitenzorg, who equalled 4th with bbypk (8), the latter having enjoyed strong results at the major events this year. Wojtek and Jakub finished in equal 6th, along with Grice. Both had the opportunity to finish first if they had picked Mauresmo over Henin, instead of vice-versa.

Brazilian Hantuchov had his best tournament to date, establishing an encouraging runner-up finish that gives him confidence for 2004. Equally impressive was last weeks champions, canuckfan & ntohir who both continued their impressive form by reaching thr semi-finals.
