You don't know Silicon Valley in the summer. It hardly ever rains anytime between April and November (maybe once or twice...if even). (But it rains every freakin' day January thru mid-March.)

They put her for the night session because:
1. She is the top seed.
2. Amber Liu is a native of Stanford.

She deserves better treatment. Capriati already has a days rest on her, and a few hours rain can make that 2 days.

This is respect. They are giving her the time when everyone is off from work, and when the people spend the most money to see. The night matches are the showcourt matches.
It's unfortunate that she MAY, the key word there, have to play a few matches in a row, but that's how it goes.
Venus was ranked #4 in 2001 New Haven, but had to play THREE matches in a row to win the title within a 24 hour time period. And not against such low-quality oponents as Liu. She had to play Henin-Hardenne, Capriati , and Davenport, but, she did it. A top player is used to this type of schedule. Kim will be fine.
