Here is an article that I typed up from the Daily Express about Elena's condition.

'Elena not deterred by illness'

By Nigel Clarke

Elena Baltacha, Britain's most promising tennis player, has been diagnosed with a bile duct infection for which there is no known cure.

Baltacha, until last month the women's No.1 in this country, has been told by a London professor that she will have the condition for the rest of her life.

However, he has said that altough the infection is chronic and incurable, Baltacha can keep playing.

For the last three years Baltacha has suffered from repeated bouts of tonsilitus, infections and prolonged bouts of fatigue, and her coach Alan Jones, said: "It is just a massive relief discovering at last what is wrong with her and, at 19 that was scary. It is belived she was born with it.

"She is going back to see the professor in September, with another check in December. In the meantime we have to learn how to get the condition under control"

Jones ids going to put together a new training scheme for Baltacha and said " She has suffered stress and anxiety, and now has to accept that she will never get better, so we have to talk it over.

"The official diagnoisis is cholangitis but the best news for Elena is that once she's come to terms with it, and we've worked out a way for her to play through it, she can resume her tennis.

"The doctor has assured her there is no reason she cannot go on to reach the levels expected of her."

But first Baltacha, who has barely been able to practice for 18 months, will take a break from the game and a holiday. She will not compete in the US Open next month and will not be hurried back into competition.

Jones said: "With luck there will be more US Opens in the future. She is still very young. Her adviser Jo Durie, came to me at the same age having had major back surgery and in three years she was No.5 in the world."
