With the Canadians included too... This is an absouluteley incredible tournament. I just hope Venus doesn't pull out because I want to see an all Williams final here. I really think that could be a make it or break it tournament if Venus does decide to show up. I would have gone but I have a curling camp starting the day of finals and flying would be WAY too expensive so I will watch on TSN, Hopefully we will also get a Canadian to the third round.

i believe most people want to see Venus vs Serena in the QF...:)
if Amelie can make a run with the help of Venus's injury,
maybe she can grab that #4 seeding....:D

hopefully by now Sugiyama already enters TOP 10 and gets that #8 seeding

Jelena should have dropped out of the seeding by now,
last time she was unseeded was about 2 years ago,
and if she isnt seeded here, i guess we can say byebye to Jelena....:)

last time Monica wasnt seeded dated back to the beginning of 2000,
so more than 3 years ago was she unseeded.......

no, sharapova will not come to Toronto because she want a wild card and tennis canada will lose all wild card with low players canadian who year after year lose in first round. Instead of giving them to player who try to comeback from better years. Thats the way it goes for tennis there...

 ? so.. maria isnt coming to Toronot???

i assure you she is not coming. She have to decide between the pilot pen and toronto. toronto dont give any wildcard to players like her because they lose their wildcard with player like drake and jeyaseelan. new haven will give her a wildcard im pretty sure.

I know that is disappointing. Maria would definitely garner a lot of attention and fan support. But there was ONE Canadian who did win a round once in Toronto, and that was Renata Kolbovic some 5 years ago lol....Randy H has the details.

For me i have stop thinking like you after Meech, i'm now 100% québécois like your probably 100% canadian. I understand your point but try to understand mine. Is it normal for you in a supose bilingual country like canada, at tennis canada they don't speak a word of french? anyway i don't want to enter in that kind of debate here, if you wanna talk about it write me an e-mail i will explain to you my point. If Tennis Canada has 3 wildcards to give to Canadians they give them out to the top 3 ranked players on the WTA. If Marie-Êve Pelletier was in the top 3, she would get the wildcard, regardless of where the tournament is being held. At last year's tournament in Montreal, Marie-Êve didn't get a wildcard, since Jana Nejedly and Maureen Drake were ranked above her, Mary Pierce got the other one. I know it was a big deal not giving it to Marie-Êve (I still say she should have gotten it), but they went by ranking, just like they'll do this year. So, if Marie-Êve did have the ranking, YES Tennis Canada would give something as important as a wildcard to a Québécoise!

barabanschikova_fan
Jul 24th, 2003, 05:33 PM
i disagree with you. i already explain why last year. don t want to enter in that kind of discussion again. Why give a wild card to a player with the experience of drake when you know she is 30! and did not give one to m-e and marois. simply because they are quebecoise.

I'm not saying that Tennis Canada's policy is right, which is not. I too am of the idea that the wildcard should be given to up and coming canadian tennis player, regardless of where they are from. I too would give one to Marois and Pelletier, simply because they are both top Canadian prospects. Where I disagree with you is that Tennis Canada purposefully chooses to give wildcards to players that are not from Québec.

You know I understand what you mean and I'm not defending Tennis Canada's position.

anyway, we gonna wait before screeming but i just hope that m-e will realize that it changed nothing for tennis canada that she played for canada in the fed cup and i just hope she will stop losing the chance to play challengers instead of fed cup for a country that dont recognize her work and sacrifices.

Jeyeselan!

On another subject, why are they signing the canadian song at the beginning of the tournament when the tournament is in Toronto! Why wisgning a song when all the player in the draw are from others countries? Hockey will maybe remove that from their game and now tennis in canada add it... maybe they will understand that this is not by putting canadian flags everywhere that we gonna feel more canadian!

~CANUCK~
Jul 24th, 2003, 11:59 PM
why should tennis canada give marie-eve a wild card if she isn't in the top 2. I agree that they should give them to the young kids to give them experence...but you have to look at it a different way...tennis isn't the most popular sport in canada...and the only way to become more popular is for canadians to see other canadians doing well...so they give the wild cards to the players who have the best chance at winning a round or two...that would be the highest ranked players...and its not like they totally ignore m-e or marois...they give them wild cards into the qualies and they lose first round every year or almost every year. So when you look at it that way why would you give a md wildcard to someone who can't even make it past one quali round when you have players like drake and nedjly who have proven they can win one or two rounds.

Canada is going by the rankings, and going by the participation in Fed Cup. There are the things that determine the wildcards at the Canadian Open, so already you can be sure Marois will not be given more than a qualifying wildcard as she has not even beaten someone inside the top 150 in the world yet.

Drake may be older, and I understand the point of giving young players experience too, but she is our best player looking at the rankings. Pelletier has never played even a slam maindraw match, while at least Drake has actually won slam matches before! Pelletier also has a losing record this year, even in hardcourt matches. Her only real good tournament this year was Key Biscayne where she beat Reeves and Fislova to qualify, and then she was quickly put in her place by Sanchez Lorenzo 6-2, 6-1. Hardly a convicning scoreline that shows she is going to put up much fight against maindraw players. She needs to prove herself more, and she has not done that yet.

Drake has had better results this year, she is ranked higher, she has played Fed Cup. She has earned her wildcard, simple as that.

As for the last spot, Marie-Eve does have some hope, only because Webb has been in very poor form lately, and they may take that into account. But even at that, she still won a slam maindraw match this year, and she is ranked higher. Personally I think Drake and Pelletier deserve them, and maybe Pelletier's Fed Cup singles efforts will give her the edge, but I will understand if they feel that Vanessa deserves over her aswell.

I honestly see no 'Quebec bias' in the decision, in fact it seems pretty straightforward and obvious why the WC's haven't gone to them in the past.

what a surprise man, you really surprise me with that sentence, we already know your position like mine so please don't start the debate.

Try to call tennis canada and speak french and you will maybe understand more what i mean.

One time maybe i can let it pass, 2 years later, same thing! sorry but i can't tolerate that.

We live in 2 different countries but only 1 country have all the rights. Is it fair? no! it should be like in england! athlete compete for their country: scotland(écosse) or england.

In canada it is different, you said you are proud to be québécoise and than you are put aside of others etc etc, maybe thats a fact that your disaprove but you did nothing to help to resolve the problem so your in the same group for me.! Sorry it had to get out of me.

You can disagree all you like, and I am sure there are situations in Canada where people of Quebec are unfairly discriminated against, and I am sure that it is not just people in Quebec who face discrimination in Canada. Discrimination is everywhere.

However, in this particular topic, I see no facts shown by you that show to me that there is any reason to believe the girls from Quebec are being treated unequally in the wildcard decision making at the Canadian Open. The only Canadian from Quebec even close to deserving a maindraw wildcard is Pelletier, and in past years she has not been ranked high enough in Canada to merit this, and she has not shown results on the tour in comparison to other Canadian girls which should allow her to receive a wildcard above them.

In 1999 Maureen Drake was ranked in the top 50, and at the time of the Canadian Open she just barely missed the maindraw entry list on her own ranking. However, she did not play Fed Cup that year, which is one of the large factors in determining which Canadians are given maindraw wildcards. Drake was upset with this decision because she felt her ranking certainly deserved to award her a wildcard, but Tennis Canada puts a strong emphasis in making yourself available to compete in the Fed Cup and play for your country and she did not do this, so she was forced to qualify. She not only qualified but she also beat Anne Kremer in the mainddraw and showed that she was worthy of being in the maindraw.

Perhaps Marie-Eve should have done this in past years if she was really so worthy of a wildcard before.

barabanschikova_fan

Try to call tennis canada and speak french and you will maybe understand more what i mean.

Yes this does suck that they don't speak french....and you say we live in a bilingual country...so then why is when i go to many places in montreal they don't speak english. Its becoz english speakin quebec people are a minority here...its the exact same thing for french in the rest of canada...they don't do it coz they dislike quebec..they do it becoz most of the country is english. Becoz if you expect canada or any other country for that matter to be able to have every organization in there country to be able to speak every minority language then every one working for govenment run programs better learn italian, spanish ect..becoz we have a big population of other people who can only speak those languages. You keep saying that the rest of canada hates quebec...well i feel like the rest of quebec hates people like me..english speakin quebecers...you say you want to be treated fairly...why don't you start with your own province before you complain about how others treat you

do you compare the situation of french speaking outside québec with the one of english speaking in québec!? if yes, i just can't wait to send you and to everybody interrested all the studies who will let you know that you cannot compare both. there is people who live in québec since 30 years and they dont even talk a word of french and there are ok in the day to day life because the only population bilingual in that country is québec.!

Tennis Canada receive a large part of the $$$ from federal governement and they are supose to offer bilingual service, it was not the case in the past and i can't wait to see if it improve. I will tell you that in 2 weeks and a half. Can you understand that the one who is supose to do the promotion for the tournament, don't even speak a word of french!

they are ok in day to day life becoz they adapt to the situation...just like french people should do when it comes to the rest of canada...i barely speak french and i live in quebec...but im trying to get better in french becoz i don't expect quebec to change and help out english people..but my question to is why should i be forced to learn french to have a better life when you refuse to try english...all you do is bitch the tennis canada is english...why don't you just try to speak english...is it that much of an incovince in your day to speak english for what all of 5 minutes that your phone call was gonna be....i totally agree with you that government should speak both no matter what...but honestly what difference does it make to you if the promoter for toronto speaks french or not...you will still have your french ads for the tourny

why i should try if they don't even try to speak french? they are supose to speak french so why speak my second language? Tennis Canada is just one in a large groups of service sponsor by the canadian governement and are supose to offer service in both language and they don't. When people from Canada come to the Montréal tournament and speak english we serv them in english. I want the same thing. I spend my money in their tournament so they should serv me in my language. This is not russian this only french! a language who is supose to be one of both official language!

yes but when people come to montreal you have to speak english...becoz there are a lot of people that come are from outside quebec...like the us and other provinces...but why should toronto have everyone working there be able to speak french for what all of like 100 french people that will go who refuse to speak english....i agree that they should have a few people speaking french and im sure they have one or two...coz i really doubt you have talked to every single person that works for tennis canada or the T.O tourny and you know for sure none of them have any french....you say you spend your money there so they should talk to you in french...so when you go anywhere else in the world and you spend money you expect them to speak to you in french..and like i have said before i have spent money in quebec and i had to speak french...but i don't go around bitching and complaining to everyone on the board...i had to speak french it really wasn't the end of the world...you should really learn to be the same way...u keep saying that we are a bilingual contry but you keep ignoring the fact that you guys do the same thing to english people in your province...yes we can get by without speakin french...but you really don't make it easy on us...maybe i should start going on the board and bitch about how often ive had to speak french to get something here...even though we are a bilingual county

i don't disagree at all...i think marie-eve should get the wildcard...but if she doesn't it has nothing to do with her language but everything to do with the fact she is #3 in canada

i assure you Maria Sharapova is not coming. She have to decide between the pilot pen and toronto. toronto dont give any wildcard to players like her because they lose their wildcard with player like drake and jeyaseelan. new haven will give her a wildcard im pretty sure.

Well, based on my calculations on WTA rankings:

On the week of Aug 4 when the ranking will be released, Razzano will be going down (will not defend 50 pts) and will be below than Sharapova and if Safina doesn't get 172.50 pts or better by playing this week at Sopot, she will be below Sharapova, then Sharapova will be automatically in the Toronto main draw if 4 more players withdraw.

Monica and Venus are still questionable and two more players.

So, it's a possiblity. But still, I get the feeling that she has to stick in the qualifying draw if she chooses Toronto over New Haven.

Very good, Ryan! Le bel femme is a fencer (from Ste-Foy, home town of Melanie Marois, BTW). And if her fellow Quebecois doesn't learn who she is, she'll take her epee and... :p

The TV coverage of that event here in Germany (Eurosport channel) is really good, so hopefully I will see my favorite player on TV!

Furthermore (while they did just FINALLY "break ground" for the new world-class facility @ York Univ. in Toronto), for years BOTH of Canada's best training facilities have been in Montreal, one Federal (Jarry Parc?) and one provincial! BTW: oui, Olga is une bel femme, but if B-Fan wants to revive Parti Quebecois: find a heroine from Quebec Libre! (Libido B4 Liberte', mon ami)? :p
