There's an article in the current issue of Schuh Magazine from the Dubai Tennis Tournament this year.. I've scanned the photos, but since the pages are glossy and are a pain to scan correctly, I'm gonna have to type out the interview ;) UK Amézons, you can get a copy from Schuh stores - Otherwise you'll have to order a pair of shoes with them online and you receive a complimentary copy ;)

Tell us about your year Amélie...
It's been a great year for me, probably my best, at least in terms of consistenly competing with the best in the world. Getting to the semis of Wimbledon and the US Open were obviously the highlights. It gave me lots of confidence and showed me that this is where I belong.

You're number seven in the world, your ambition is to be number one - will 2003 be the year you reach the very top of the women's game?
Who knows? I hope so! [DON'T WE ALL?] It's obviously going to be very tough to go above the Williams sisters, the Belgians and Hantuchova, but if I keep working really hard and have some good results, anything is possible. It is an ambitious target considering the success of Serena and Venus, who have notched up seven victories between them in the last nine Grand Slams. My goal is to reach number one. Whether it's going to happen in a month, a year, or five years, I don't know. Everyone has a goal in life and in my tennis life, that's mine.

You were forced to retire midway though your Semi Final in Dubai against Monica Seles. Will you come back next year to attempt to regain the title?
Of course I will come back to Dubai for the third time next year. This injury was not the problem with Dubai. It's about my ability to take physical strain.

Did you always dream of being a pro tennis player?
I don't know about always, but definitely for a very long time. Ever since I've known that I have a talent for this sport, I've tried my hardest to fulfil my potential and be the best tennis player I can. It's something that's not going to happen overnight and I was prepared for the rewards to come a little at a time.

What's the best thing about being a professional tennis player
That's easy. It's having a job that I love so much. Getting paid for something I enjoy. I know that's a pretty fortunate position to be in and I'm very grateful for the chances I have to play my sport around the world and hopefully entertain lots of people.

What are your ambitions for life after playing on the tour?
It's hard to say. I'm really focused at the moment on my current job playing tennis, so I'm not really giving my future after tennis too much thought at the moment. I plan to be doing this for a while more!

What do you think of Dubai as an off court destination?
I hope I'll see more of Dubai this year. It's always the way as a tennis player, you're so focused on the tennis. What I have seen of the city is very impressive, with lots to do and see. I'll see if I can go and do some shopping now and get some good deals! I can see why lots of people go there for holidays
