I have noticed the great creativity on this board and in reporters (who sometimes pick the totally wrongs verb). Here are some verbs or expressions I have seen to say "defeat"
Beat
overcame
overwhelmed
overpowered
outplayed
outfinessed
outperformed
ousted
outserved
outgunned
outlasted
outclassed
outmaneuvered
wore out
blasted... off the court
demoralized
crushed
slaughtered
spanked
killed
annihilated
destroyed
edged out
sneaked by
romped
routed
tofued
sliced and diced
sushied
peeled
wiped ... off the court
swept past
blew away
gave.... a tennis clinic
stomped
can you think of more? there have to be 100s of these ways to say "defeated"
