View Full Version : The Roesch Curse Broken: Dementieva Triumphs

Jun 24th, 2003, 02:02 PM
Elena Dementieva (15) def. Angelika Roesch 6-2, 6-1.

It's only the first round, and her opponent may not have been the fiercest in the draw, but I think Elena must be awfully pleased with the outcome.

Quebec, Sep 22 2002: A Roesch - E Dementieva(2) 7-6(0) 6-7(1) 6-4
New Haven, Aug 25 2002: A Roesch-Q - E Dementieva(8) 6-3 1-6 6-3
Berlin, May 12 2002: A Roesch-Q - E Dementieva(12) 6-4 1-6 7-5

But where does Angelika go from here? She has lost her points sponsor, and is now in that dreaded position where she has to defeat other players than Elena. Horrible prospect.

From what I saw of the match, Angelika seems to be a good player. She has good, flat groundies. There's no reason why she can't become a better player.

Alyona played great though, her forehand is soooooo powerful, and at one point she hit 3 aces in a row.

I don't believe in curses.
But I do believe that when Alyona is in her zone, she is a top 10 talent.
And I think the grass should not hurt her style of game.

Well done Alyona!!

And regarding Serena, Elena will not be overawed by Serena's power, Elena has enough of her own to compete with her!!!

They've never played before, so I really want them both to get there!!
