The ESPN announcers - and the Yahoo article I just read - keep saying Petrova is the first Russian SF at the French in a quarter century. Didn't Zvereva reach the final in 1988?

The thing is... at the time that final was played, back in 1988, Zvereva was still names Natalia and she played for the USSR... Years later she would change her name into Natasha and started to play for Belarus, so I think that's where a bit of confusion stems from...

Zvereva is ethnically Russian. Just like, say, Andrei Medvedev. But she is Belarus-born and never represented Russia..

Maybe they just want to forget that she was even in that final? I mean, it happened so fast, if you blinked, it was over.

Double bagel in 34 minutes... maybe that's what they meant... no Russian has ever been in a Roland Garros final in the sense that Zvereva didn't actually manage to "be" in that final, she was just swept away before she realised the match had begun... I know I'm being a bad boy...
