View Full Version : Voila! My reports start.

Hi guys! I`m afraid I won`t be able to write detailed reports, at least not every day. The computers in the press-centre are alwais occupied, so I have to use cybercafes. But anyway I hope to describe what I`ve seen.

This is the 1st day. May I say it was fantastic? I think I may cause it absolutely was. I arrived 1 hour before the matches really started to get a pass and to have a look around before I am too busy. And to dine of course.

Anyway, after that I watched a bit Likhovtzeva - Loit match. I wasn`t impressed with Alyona`s play at all to be frankly. So I left after the 1st set. And immediately I met Nastya in the main street of the Stadium. We just said "hi", I wished her good-luck against Dinara. Next stop - Safina - Myskina match. I watched it from beginning till the end. Dinara started very aggresively, and Nastya was seemingly surprised by it. She actually lost her serve in the 1st game, but already in the 2nd Nastya came back to her senses. May I say she knows how to master powerful players and Dinara is not experienced enough to manage her power. I was sitting next to Nastya`s boy-friend. At first he was trying to encourage her - Davay Nastya etc, but already in the end of the 1st set he was silent and quite confident of Nastya. One row from was sitting Andrey Chesnokov and his son (or nephew?). The boy was so cute :). He was speaking of how he got an autograph from Andre Agassi, and what a pity that Pete Sampras was not here. :)

Next step I took an interview with Nastya. Well, there were not any astonishing eye-openers. We just talked about what she likes in Paris and in Moscow, what was her boy-friends name (the answer is Jens :)) an things like that.

Ok, after that I had to choose what match to watch next - Kafelnikov`s or Lina`s. I had no doubts. I like Lina, but Zhenya is high class. So I went to Suzann Lenglen court and watched two first sets. I must say that Zhenya was completely in control of the game from the very beginning. He felt so confident, that I hope he can join the title hunt.

I left Suzann Lenglen just in time to see the 2nd set of Lina`s match vs. Craybas. Our little Russian girl just eliminated that poor Americain. Only in the middle of the 2nd set she became too relaxed and allowed Craybas to level the score. She was very good, but actually I don`t think she stands a chance vs. Amelie right now. But I hope she will rise to the top level soon. Elena Bovina was watching that much (that for the information of miss Leena :)).

And the last but not least - I had an interview with Lina, and OMG what an interview was - very sincere to say the least. We talked tete-a-tete about 20 minutes - about her friends and her false friends, about Larisa Neiland, about other girls, about her bad time during the injury. I never thought a player would ever say things like that. In the end we talked about fans and internet, and she told that she visits her unoffficial site (well, that was not surprise :)), she was impressed with a poem one guy wrote on this site and she even printed it and store it. :) And she said she recieve our letter long ago and several times she was here at the RR :).

So that`s it. Tomorrow I expect the great day as well. Lena and Vera start their run. :)

Oh wow! Glad you had fun!! :)

Its great hearing reports from those who are there, kinda helps you soak in the atmosphere!

Could you please suggest to Elena (if you get to tak to her) that she should try phsyiotherapy and exercises to strengthen her shoulder, similar to what Clijsters did.

Thanks! :)

I was wearing a wimbledon cap, maybe you saw me... I hope we could meet here. you can easily recognize me since i will be the only one to wear such a cap ;)

I think I saw you on TV today at the Bovina-Golovin match

Maybe. :) I watched the 1st set. Was I wearing a red T-shirt? But as soon as it became visible that Tanya is not a match for Lena I left.

But let`s begin from the very beginning. This day wasn`t as good as was the 1st, but anyway I enjoed it. The 1st match I`ve seen was Vera vs. Martina. Funny that both girls came to the court wearing exactly the same clothes. But otherwise they were not a bit similar. Vera simply overpowered Martina. But she wasn`t that good when I wanted to talk to her. :( Many girls - Nastya, Alyona, Lina, Nadya - are very easy to speak. But Vera was a different matter. She is too serious. But I guess this is just one weak point of hers. :)

Then came the shock. When I finished with Vera I went to look upon the scores and found out that Alyona actually was down 3:6, 0:4  I hurried to the court and when I got there it was already 0:5 in the 2nd. I don`t know how Alyona had played before that moment, but next three games she played brilliantly. The crowd was totally behind her, but after winning 3 games in a row she made two crusial mistakes and that was enough for the Spanish girl to hold her serve. That was the shock - my favourite player went out in the 1st round  In fact there was not much I could ask Alyona after the match, so I just tried to find some words to comfort her and asked very few questions. She confirmed that her foot no longer bothers her (that`s a good news actually :)) but she missed the rhythm as her praparation for RG was spoiled. She also said that she would definetely play the grass season.

Then I went to the Bovina - Golovin match. Behind me was sitting Misha Youzhny with his coach and with a friend. But the match wasn`t that interisting, so soon many including me have left. That`s almost all. I also watched a bit of Chang and a bit of Kuerten matches and the 1st set o Nastya`s match vs. Monica :)

So here I am. Two days have gone. Sorrow and joy have mixed up.

No detqiled reports today I'm afraid. Actually I'm not in the mood and I need to write down an interview. 4 losses - and we expected 3 wins :(

Nastya's loss can be explained by her illness. She was visibly ill, coughing and sneezing. She said she would go home tomorrow to get better.

Lina was terrified by the hostile crowd. She said she never played in such an atmosphere. "It was like I'm stepping into the Gladiators Arena" - her exact words.

OK, I hope Thursday will be a better day. Good-luck Russians :)

I knew this was going to be a bad tournament for the Russians. But today was even worse than I ever imagined. Myskina continued her terrible play in the grand slams. Lina didn't even show up against Mauresmo. And Kafelnikov and Youzhny lost 5 set matches to players they should be able to beat just playing mediocre tennis. What a disaster! Did I leave anyone out? This is a Russian tennis blood bath if there ever was one!

Let's hope Bovina, Zvonareva and the Russian juniors pick up the slack.

Hi guys! :)
Sorry, at the 4th day I was already a bit tired of tennis, so I`ve been at the stadium up to the end of the Davydenko`s match and then left to see Paris (despite I don`t like that city ;)).

First to mention I was very surprised when heard that Lena Bovina has lost. I`ve been to her match for 5 games in the beginning, and she seemed to be in control of it. Rita Grande`s father (he looks much alike Mansour Bahrami) was at this time very nervous and was trying to encourage his daughter. I thought it would be an easy cake for Lena and went to see the ending of the Kolya`s match. I guess you all have seen it. He lost it, not Shrimp won. Kolya acknowledged it after the match. He said that he had made many mistakes and if he had played up to 100 % he would crush Hewitt.

I also went to see Lina and Alyona playing against the Americain girls. Lina was the leader of the team. She commanded the strategy and was marvelous at the net. I didn`t want to go to the stade on Friday, but now I will go to see them playing against Kim and Ai. I just wonder how many spectators won`t be able to see that match because of the small court?

It was a hot day here in Paris. I almost burned my skin. And there was a huge disappointment - I couldn`t take interview with Guilliermo Coria as he doesn`t speak any languages apart from Spanish. Very very sad indeed.

Lina and Alyona lost. I don`t know if you`ve seen that match, but it was a good one. As I expected the small 17 court wasn`t able to place all the spectators who wished to see that battle. I guess at least several hundreds were standing around the court, and many of them could not see the match. Very wise choice of court, really. As for the match, Kim and Ai were the real double team, they both played very good at the net. While our Russian girls were rather shy at the net. Both of them, espl Alyona, were not standing enough close to it. So it was a deserved win for Kim and Ai, though Alyona and Lina definetely could turn it their way even without net play, but mistakes (very few, but they were the key ones) made the life harder for them. Now they will both fly to Moscow on Saturday. Lina wants to make a little break and Alyona as well. If I`m not mistaken they both will miss the first week of the grass season.

Will you be going to watch Vera and Nadia?

I have watched it, though they've been playing at the same time :(. First I went to see Nadya to start in her match against Irvin on the court 7. As I expected, she took a quick start, and was totally in control of the match since the very beginning. I really appreciate her serve - very fast and precise, her groundstrokes, her net-play. Apparently she does not have weaknesses, so in her match against Capriati we'll see who has more advantages. :) Nadya said she wants a sweet revenge for her loss to Jennifer in Rome. She also said that she enjoys playing in the heat. But I'm afraid she may be not fresh enough for her Sunday's match as she has a very tough schedule - she is playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

After Nadya had won the 1st set I moved to the court 1 to see how Vera was dealing with the Spanish gors. This Maria Sanchez Lorenzo was real good, she alwais managed to keep the ball in play and didn˛t not make many unforced errors. So Vera had to vary her tactics and that was the wise decision. :) After the match Vera said that she knows how to beat Venus, but there is difference "between knowing the pqss qnd walking the pass" :), so we'll see. At least Venus doesn˛t look unbeatable and Vera plays up to at least 90 per cent she will beat her.

So we will get our habitual once-per-three years GS semifinalist. Hopefully it is more than that and the winner of Nadya-Vera will give it a serious shot in semis, not repeating Alyona's mistake who was sleeping for a set and a half at USO semis three years ago. Three superscalps on the way to the quarters - Seles, Venus, Capriari holding 16 Slams between them.

Yet, choosing the best of these two wins, I prefer Vera's win. Due to a couple of reasons...

Beating Jennifer is an amazing achievement, yet beating Venus at this point of the tournament is a rare feat. Since her debut GS in 1997, Venus lost only once between the 1st Round and quarterfinals. Also no Russian player has EVER beaten Venus Williams in a WTA tournament or Grandslam. Jennifer usually loses quite a few matches per year, so beating Jennifer is not that unique, Venus losses per year are normally kept in single figures, and half of those losses go to her sister. Nadya surely knew she is capabl of beating Jennifer. Mere idea of beating Venus Williams sounds as herecy for all non Top 10 players. I think that mentally Vera had to overcome bigger hurdle.

Second reason.. It felt that Venus-Vera match , while was more error-filled, was a faster, more aggressive tennis, with ball taken very early by both players, with a lot of shot variety, a lot of angles, slices, while in Nadya-Jennifer match it felt like ball always crosses the baseline and almost never a sideline, and the only true variety in the game was Nadya coming in. Also, it is not that Venus fell apart. Vera managed to break down Venus's forehand completely, and that's not something that fell from the sky.

So, both were excellent matches, but while visually Nadya's win looks more impressive, I would not underestimate Vera's win and would by no mean consider it as a result of Venus playing badly and amaking errors. In past year there were plenty matches in GS tournaments where Venus played very sub-par tennis, yet, there was only one player before Vera who managed to benefit from that.

As to the semis.. I think that Nadya needs that victory more, but that's absolutely irrelevant. nadya wins, she is seeded at Wimbledon ( which is, BTW, also absolutely unimportant at this point ), Vera wins, and she is seeded Top 16 at Wimbledon, but given that there are 3.5 players at WTA who have an idea of how to play on grass, that's not important either.

I hope that no matter who wins that semis, neither girl would have anything to regret afterwards, and for that would be a good match for them both to remember and for us to enjoy ( even if we won't see it most likely ).

Sorry guys, I couldn`t write anything yesterday. After the matches I was as drunk as drunk could be :) But extremely happy. Vera got a bit of booing from the French crowd, but that did not spoil the day. She actually did not wave to the spectators, who were behind her during the whole match. Don`t know why she didn`t do that. But anyway it was well done and she could be excused for these great emotions. For the first time I found being a journalist rather inconvenient, cause a journalist supposed to hide the emotions and have a neutral approach to the match. That wasn`t easy. :)

I didn`t talk to Vera after the match cause I hurried to the court 1 to see the 2nd and the 3d sets of Nadya`s play. Despite I admire Vera very much I must admit that Nadya is far more consistent at the moment. Vera has beaten Venus who was at least 60 % fit, but Nadya outplayed Jennifer who was close to her best form. Both girls played fantasticly, the win could go either way. Hopefully it went ours. :)

Jennifer seemed completely empty after the match. When asked what do you feel about the Russian invasion in the WTA, she answered without any emptions: I don`t know. I don`t care.

IMO Nadya should easily outplay Vera. There is just one "if". If she is not too tired after her Monday`s double and mixed double. Hope she will make a right decision. I myself will stand for Nadya.

Thanks. :) :)
She lost with Jelena in doubles today. A 2 set loss. I hope it won't demoralize her.

Hi guys! It was a good day. As I thought Nadya has beaten Vera. But I predicted an easier win. Well, Vera does has something to improve - and that is hre serve. It`s too weak for a top20 player. Otherwise she is equipped with everything for a potential Top5 player. Nadya at the same time plays the top5 tennis already. I`m positive that she at the very least will give Kim much trouble, but hopefully I expect another upset from our girl. :)

I like Nadya`s confidence towards the match. "You are not a favourite against Kim. Does it help you?" - was the question. "Why I`m not a favourite? - she simply replied. - We played juniors together, I`ve beaten her many times. So I guess I have a very good chance not only to beat Kim but to win a tournament as well" :)

Tomorrow I wont go to the stade. But on Thursday we will see a match of the year. :-)) Go Nadya!!

Thanks, fresh!!!! That is the first comment of Nadya's that I have seen, and it is a great one!!! I love her attitude! And I agree with her -- she does have a chance. :D

Still, I am glad she is out of the women's doubles. The Mixed is good, I am sure it is relaxing and fun, though they did have to come from a set down to win today. But I just meant that I don't think that participating in it is going to hurt her chances on Thursday.

Hey Nadya! Please beat Kim!!! A Justine-Nadya final would be just my cup of tea! :)

Finally, I see in Sport-Express something familiar..;)

;) I got tired of nothing to do so far, and decided to work a bit :)
On Monday I hope there will be an interview with Alyona Likhovtzeva. I already talked to her yesterday after her mixed final. And with Zhenya Kafelnikov, if he will tell some interesting things. On Tuesday, maybe with Vera Douchevina, if she wins juniors final.

hope to see some nice interesting questions fresh ;)

Ask Vera why she hasn't used any of the 75K exemptions she has ?? She was due to play Dubai but thats been cancelled.
She has two $75's left, one is in Batumi, ask Vera which other Junior Exempt she is taking.

fresh, other questions to ask any of the players:

what are their opinions on women's semi controversy

for Vera: who is her coach, sponsor, player she looks up to, her least fav opponent to play against (in juniors, of course) and why, her fav subject at school ;), when is her next pro-tournament (excluding Wimbledon)

Vera is playing $50k+H in Marseille starting Monday
its her 1st of her 3 Junior Exempt events.

Coach:Irina Granatusova though not sure if she still is her coach
she got a deal with Yonex a while back

I talked to Zhenya today after his double match. It should be a good interview. In the beginning I said to him a couple of compliments, so afterwards he was very friendly and willing to talk. :) Hope it will be published on Monday as well as Elena`s interview.

Great job, Gleb.. :worship:

Very well done, nicely designed and intelligent interviews.. Such a rarity thiese days..

But you might later regret asking Yevgeny that last question and getting that kind of answer.. We need him next year.. We won't win DC without him..

Could you interview some of our girls exclusively for Russian Roulette one day? ;)

Wow, thanks Sergei. I`m really flattered http://fool.exler.ru/sm/bis.gif Your opinion means much to me.

On Tuesday I hope there will be an interview with Douchevina, but it`s not good I`m afraid. Vera was very shy and she just replied with short answers to any question. :(
