Ashley dictates the game and doesn't make many errors, when Dani tries to take over the control she makes too many errors... :(

great observation moogle!, Ashley from what i've read about her, is considered to be the next Top US player...and is showin a LOT of maturity in her game + she has the confidence of knowing she has the backing of being one of the top US prospects right behind the Williams sisters...this is a big test for Dani.!

This from Eurosport.com...

12:57 : COURT 1: After 46 minutes of play Hantichova levels the match to one set all! However, she is not at her best level of play! She looks a bit nervous and she is missing easy shots!

I'm sorry to say, but i expected the 'nervousness' from Hantchu....she is so much better as the Underdog...don't think she likes to be in the limelight all the time

12:07 : COURT 1 Tie breaker: Hantuchova - Harkleroad: 2-7 and the American takes the first set away from the ninth seed. Hantuchova is not in her best day! She is having some trouble with her goundtrokes! They are overpowered and lack precision.

yeh, for the end of the 1st set and the tie-break that's definitely correct. The main problem is that she lacks constancy: she can play two or three games in a row leaving her opponent not the slightest chance because her strokes are too good. But then she has two or more games where nothing works!

Yep..too many UE's ....i've said this before...she would much rather be the underdog...she really needs to have that kind of mentality to win matches...she is currently going into matches she has to 'defend'....her standing, her image and all the publicity and fans she has...too much wt. on those delicate shoulders...IMHO...the nervousness is a victim of her own success in a way and the publicity on the wt. loss etc...does not make it any better...

Hark..on the other hand is Dani from last year...just rearing to go!

Dani needs to make the decisions on the court
i don't think Nigel's the type to nod his head in reassurence much if not at all...

This is the important transitional phase for Daniela - she will need to trust her own instinct and focus on her game and things on court than seeking her coach's reassurance...

I would not go that far moogie..., its a bit of a 'shoot the messenger' theory...if she's playing badly fire the coach... i give credit to Nigel for making such a ballsy call...but as i watch this match now...they are showing the 3rd set...Dani is making some great shots...but on at least 2 key points on AH serve on 1-2 she could not finish the point where she had EASY winners and instead in one case hit it wild and in the second instead of a smash hit a really weak volley only to have AH hit it for a winner; its a question of nerves; i think its also a question of 2fast2furious for Dani..IMHO..SHE HAS GOT TO KEEP HER FOCUS ON TENNIS.....i expected dani to show more calm and experience...but we all know ( i think) inside she is still a little girl (growing up)....and i am no one to pass judgement...but i can see and empathise with what she is going thru...

Hmm, very interesting. I've been away from my desk for quite a while now. At 1-4 down I began too feel rather ill and have just returned to see this amazing scoreline. So she lost 7-9, that sounds like a good fightback and lots of credit to her for this, but 100+ UE's  No-one deserves to win a game handing that many points to your opponent. That's nearly 3 per game, as I said before that's like giving your opponent a 40-0 head start. No-one is good enough to do that.

As for Nigel walking out - says it all really. Dani went on to win the second without him and then produced a spirited comeback again without him (I presume he stayed away). Trouble brewing in the camp? This could be the beginning of the end for Nigel - I'm sure she won't be impressed by him storming out. What kind of support is that? :fiery: Daniela relies on support from him while things are not going well, or so it seemed up til now, but then she seemed to play better without him, so what does that tell us? Obviously, we don't have all the facts yet and it would be unfair to speculate, but the first signs are not good.

As for this defeat, well, I'm gutted - but I'll still be here tomorrow, and the day after.... :D

hehe, I said in the disappointment of the loss and suffered still from the heat of the game I guess... I just wanted to say that - although it's an intelligent move by Nigel to make Dani more self-dependent on the court - it's still a strange sign for me... so let's wait, searching a new coach now would be way too early of course.

That may be true (I have said that I don't have any facts to go on at the moment) and if that is the case, then it seems a good move. Presumably, Marianna was still there for her and as it's been said before, Nigel isn't really very emotional on the sidelines - he never seems to be giving heaps of encouragement, lucky to get a nod of the head from him. But I do wonder how Daniela will react to that now. Will she see it as a sign of desertion or encouragement? I'm not sure at the moment but I suspect that all is not well.

I dont think here serve is that bad, 60% first serves, iv seen players win on 40%!! I think, like many players, her serve breaks down when she is nervous, i mean, i was watching Agassi on monday he did something like 3 DFs on MP, i think. I think too much is being made of the whole Nigel thing. Personally I give him credit for what he did..IMHO...the last thing Dani needs is more mollycoddling...she had ENOUGH of that in her formative years...(yes, in tennis years she is not a newcomer anymore ) what she needs is a good ol fashioned kick in the butt...she is strong enuf and bright enuf to do some dig down and learn from her own mistakes and NOT have a shoulder to cry on any more....IMHO that the best way for a young person to learn...remember she is no longer a teenager....

ESPN showing...third set...at 6-5 dani won 5 cons. games, serving for match...If Only....Dani had 2 REALLY BAD UE's in the first two points...third point amazing serve from DH....15-30...Dani hits a winner and gets A LATE CALL OUT :(...

I see this 12th game and i think this was the most imp. game of the match... 2 Bad UE's from Dani. ONe spectacualer serve. ONE really Bad call which she should have gotten....This game really makes the point... for a top 10 player to be up 6-5, serving for the match against an inexperienced player, she really should have bought it home...

From BBCNews Website:

Ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova was knocked out in the second round after losing to Ashley Harkleroad 7-6 (7/2) 4-6 9-7 in an absorbing contest at Roland Garros.

Hantuchova made numerous unforced errors and contrived to lose the first set after being 4-1 up in a disappointing performance.

Both players struggled to hold serve in the opening set but Harkleroad fought back from an unpromising position to snatch it on a tie-break as Hantuchova's composure deserted her.

The Slovak rallied in the second set and a break of serve in the seventh game gave her the chance to level the match.

The third set saw Harkleroad speed into a 5-1 lead as Hantuchova's forehand went awry but, with the match at the American's mercy, she seemed to tense up and a run of five games allowed Hantuchova to edge 6-5 in front.

Hantuchova looked to have broken Harkleroad's spirit, but the 18-year-old displayed admirable resolve in a nail-biting climax to edge out her opponent after three hours and nine minutes of dramatic tennis.

American teenager stuns No9 Hantuchová
By Araz Gulekjian
Wednesday, May 28, 2003

American teen sensation Ashley Harkleroad played the match of her
life on Wednesday to post the biggest victory of her short career,
over No9 seed Slovakian Daniela Hantuchová.

The talented 18-year-old outdueled the Slovakian star 7-6(2) 4-6 9-7
in a gruelling battle of baseliners that lasted three hours and eight
minutes on Court One and propelled the youngster through to the third
round of a Grand Slam for the first time ever.

In the opening set, the 20-year-old Slovak blasted winners at will
and surged to a 4-1 lead before Harkleroad recovered her nerve to
even the match at four games apiece.

The perky Floridian, who had her right-arm heavily strapped, cut down
on her unforced errors (66 total to her foe's 100) and began to take
control of the game with her heavy groundstrokes.

Ranked 52, Harkleroad took heart from the fact that she had soundly
beaten the lanky Slovak in their only other encounter, in Charleston
(and on clay) just last month.

Perhaps reflecting on that harrowing loss, Hantuchová endured yet
another monumental mental collapse and lost the first set in the
tiebreaker.

In the second set, Hantuchová, a quarter finalist at the 2003
Australian Open, broke the young American in the third game. But once
again, she was let down by her first serve.

A pumped up Harkleroad, who reached the junior final here last year,
appeared to be gaining steam, but nervously conceded her serve in the
seventh game with a forehand unforced error.

The Slovakian tightened her game and evened the match three games
later when the American sailed a forehand wide.

Harkleroad, who is coached by former US star Jay Berger, burst ahead
in the final set.

She built a commanding 5-1 lead in the decider but let her opponent
back into the match with a string of silly unforced errors. After
reeling off five consecutive games, the Slovak served for the match
at 6-5 but was thwarted by the determined American. Harkleroad
finally earned the match when Hantuchová's forehand sailed wide in
the 16th game of the set.

The young American will now play either Israel's Anna Pistolesi
(No23) or Spain's Magui Serna, who meet later on Wednesday.

I noticed that, when AH got up from her chair she had wet, blood-shot eyes looked like she'd been crying. Geez! im sorry but that is kinda immature! :)

Yep, she is young.

Here's my take on the players and the match guys and i say this w/out too much of a bias, only a bit :) cause i like Ashley too... (nowhere as much as the Danster)...

Dani's a better player she has better technique, a better overall court game and a better serve. However AH was the more experienced player between the two ( at least that's the way it looked)....

Dani is a specialist in hitting the corners and points close to the baseline...but there must have been at least 20 points on which Dani's return missed the line by inches or a foot or so.. U CANNOT WIN MATCHES WHEN YOU HIT SO MANY POTENTIAL WINNERS INTO UNFORCED ERRORS!!!!!

I JUST SAW THE LAST GAME, THE LAST TWO POINTS HANTCHU. MISSED TWO POTENTIAL WINNERS BY INCHES....LITREALLY AN INCH OR TWO...THIS IS MORE HEARTBREAKING THAN I EARLIER THOUGHT....MAYBE ITS THE CLAY...MAYBE ITS HER FITNESS...MAYBE ITS THE FACT SHE WAS THE MORE NERVOUS OF THE TWO (THAT WAS APPARENT)...MAYBE ITS ALL THE NON TENNIS PUBLICITY...whatever it is Graham...i don't think its 'just' her coach.

In the end she may change coaches anyway, but i do hope she goes for someone who instills more CONFIDENCE into her and really pushes her to be more independant. Maybe someone from the NBA!!!

imho.

allt.

Especially as she came from 1:5 down to lead 6:5 at one point. This has to be bad for her confidence, which seems to be shakey anyways at the moment. I just hope she can turn it around in the next week or two.

Also, did anyone else find it very disturbing and weird having both Dani and Ashley in the same outfit?

:wavey: yey!!!

Did anyone see the match tho? When dani got lobbed and she hit the ball over her head, not even looking and it went in.....bloody fantastic...then she won the point a couple of shots after that!!

During that whole match, i've never seen dani so animated with all the cute little 'come on!!'s :) :p :worship:

She's been doing a lot of that lately, (maybe she watching leyton hewitt in men's) :D.....she overdid it a bit too much today...

Her serve actually was'nt too bad today, fastest serve of over 100mpn. and of what ESPN showed, she got a few good first serves...the main point about her game is the POTENTIAL WINNERS she missed by an inch or two!

3 LONG SETS; OVER 3 HOURS; TOTAL POINTS WON AH: 133, DH: 131.

NOW JUST IMAGINE IF SHE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN EVEN 1/2 OF THOSE TWENTY CLOSE UE'S THAT WERE OUT BY AN INCH.

You would be looking at 6-7 6-4 7-5 for Dani by now!

yeh doubt-ie i saw ashley cry like a baby... i think at that moment i was very VERY happi... i smiled to myself and laffed...

it was absoultley AMAZING that Daniela came back from being 1-5 down... AMAZING! you HAVE to give a LOT of credit to Daniela for doing that.... Daniela NEVER let harkle-ass get to a Match Point... Asshley's onlt match point was the one she got... :fiery:

but tho i hate that harkleroad and im very ferious.. i have to give her some credit too... she played very welll.. and both players were hitting so hard i couldnt have seen the ball..
but i gotta admit.. IMHO after Daniela got to 6-6... Ashlley lost some confidence and started missed the ball..

but after that lil crying session.. she let loose and played good..

Mary Joe and Pam said that Daniela started playing very well when Nigel left..

and when Daniela kept on hitting those winners and saying 'COME ON!' i found myself cheering on Daniela in front of my TV screen!... i helped tho! :p

and did anyone else notice those ANNOYING lil kids screaming something like: oooooOOOo eeeEEE!!! or something like that.. for like every point in the 6-6 game and so on?! i was about to go nuts! man kids can be SO annoying!

This from Yahoo! sports, lots in this I don't agree with...i think the reporter is a bit of a dork!

My comments are in *** in the report....

Hantuchova knocked out by American teen
Slovak ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova was knocked out of the French Open in the second round by American teenager Ashley Harkleroad.

The 18-year-old Harkleroad, playing with a strapped elbow, jumped for joy as she broke the Slovak's serve to win through 7-6 (7/2), 4-6, 9-7 in 3hr 08min and set up a meeting with the winner of Spaniard Magui Serna and Israel's Anna Pistolesi.

Harkleroad, ranked 52 and coached by Argentinean former champion Jose Luis Clerc, was a junior finalist here last year, and has gone out in the first round of the last two US Opens.

Bratislava-born 20-year-old Hantuchova had to run the gauntlet of questions about her diet and justify her pencil-slim frame, which has given rise to claims she suffers from anorexia - something she strenuously denied.

*** These dorks have to drop this damn subject, no anorexic person can play over 3 hrs of cons. tennis in Berlin she played 6 friggin sets within a span of 5 hours...!!!! WTF. do these guys want!!! so she's skinny Big Fu.... Deal....!!!!

"I am really blessed in that I can eat whatever I want. I just burn more calories than I've got in my body," said Hantuchova, saying she has no eating problems.

*** Good answer, Hantchu, but net-net you need a few more pounds for a more powerful serve and to close out matches...(but she already knows that and i am sure doing what she feels she needs to do)

Hantuchova, who reached the fourth round here last year and went on to reach the Wimbledon and US Open quarter-finals, struggled from the beginning and lost her opening service game and after a tense struggle she lamely conceded the tiebreak.

*** Struggled from the beginning...what is this reporting talking...she was up 4-1!!!

She found her game briefly to level after the second set only to slide 1-5 down in the decider.

When she levelled for 5-5 it appeared she had come out of her nosedive - but 52nd-ranked Harkleroad, making her senior debut here, reined her in and a final supreme effort secured last year's junior finalist a deserved win on her first match point.

Hantuchova said if only she could have played as she did in the middle of the final set throughout she would have won at a canter.

*** She's right about that!

"From being 1-5 down in the third set that's when I started to play proper tennis. I told myself I will keep fighting til the end but unfortunately it didn't pay off and I couldn't close it out. I didn't go for my shots.

"In the end it was just a couple of points that decided the match. Mentally I was not right there - I was not choosing right shots at the right time - sometimes I was going too much for it."

***Yep she won only 2 points less then AH

Having her mirror image on the other side of the court was a further distraction.

"I didn't really like it - but that's the design. I really like the clothes - but I don't think it's good when both of us are wearing the same thing."

*** I'm sorry, This is BullSh*t... Dani has to get over all these silly nonsensical issues...whether its crowd noise, or kids, or too many cameras or what the other player is wearing!!!!!. I don't care if AH shows up in Burkha or a friggin Bikini...go in there...focus on YOUR game...Your opponent is just somebody returning your shots....and KICK ITS ASS.!!!....She has got to get over this trivial nonsense...she is right its Nike's Design and EVERY Nike sponsered player has the right to wear that dress...even if she reco. it....if she is that concerned then have Nike design something prop. for her...but then what the heck are .u... a fashion designer or a tennis player...this is what i have been harping around for a while...ITS TOO COMPETTIVE GIRL!...u can't do both...at least not at the same time...so quit worrying about what your opponent is wearing and start thinking about how to get those cross court shots inside the lines....!!!! as always IMHO!

Pressed again on her eating habits Hantuchova paused before insisting her health was not an issue.

"I proved physically I am really fit - I felt well on the court - it had nothing to do with the physical side - it was more the mental side that was not right there today," she stressed after losing to Harkleroad for the second time this season, following an earlier reverse at Charleston.

*** She is right!

"That was one of the worst matches I ever played," said Hantuchova referring to her Charleston loss.

*** I'm glad she owned up to that and 'realized' she fu**ed up there. This is a good sign. Earlier she used to keep a very politically correct dialouge about the other player was much better...

"Today, I started well. If I had had a better shot selection I would have won today. I think both match I lost to her it was about me making too many mistakes.

*** better shot selection, and a bit more control...

"At the moment I am not playing the way I'd like to - but I felt I was ready for the tournament."

"There's much more pressure for me than last year. Now everyone's expecting me to win "

*** Goes w/ the territory, Dani! what u have to do is FORGET 'everyone', (including Nigel when u are on court ) concentrate on what YOU want to do. Dani, a lot of this pressure is self inflicted...when you want glamour exposure along with tennis success you can BET every women player on the circuit will be envious of you and will be Gunning for you...even if they are NOT YOU THINK they are gunning for you!

Harkleroad said, meanwhile, that Paris brings out the best in her.

"I love it here - I always play well here. I feel at home here. I was really excited. I was just trying to stay focused and keep my composure. I've always been a fighter - even when I was playing juniors."

**** yeah, yeah, yeah...for pete's sake, go visit the Eifeel Tower...

**** Overall she gave the right interview but the anorexia nonsense has got to be a unwelcome distraction for her...

comments welcome.

Whoooaaaahhh!!! Calm down Allt!!

I understand your frustration, believe me, really I do. I had to take a stress break at work today because I was getting so wound up by the whole game. She just frustrates the life out of me.

Yes, the media questioning is stupid at times and I think Daniela handles that well. She's used to it now and no matter what anyone says, the media have and always will do, ask the most stupid question to try and tempt out a quote that will give them a scoop. It is their job. Their editors don't want pretty stories about nice drop shots, they want to dish the dirt. As fans, we have to cope with and handle that frustration too.

As for Dani's play today. Again, very frustrating. But what if she'd have lied down and got rolled over? What if she played safe and didn't go for any shots? Is that the Dani we want to see? Or do we want to see someone who is maybe a bit cavalier, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Whatever, getting angry with her doesn't solve anything. Of course we want her to go out and 'kick ass' every time, but be realistic man, that just isn't going to happen. Not yet anyway.

We all hate it when she loses. We all get angry and frustrated and maybe say things we later regret. I've done it, we all do it. Let's just try and put this into perspective and look at the bigger picture. It is not the end of the world and we still have a hell of a lot to look forward to, so let's be grateful and thankful for that. Let's also show some support for her when things aren't going well. That's what we do and that's what we, as fans should focus on doing, supporting her.

Mixed doubles...

Francesca Schiavone ITA
Chris Haggard RSA
vs.
Daniela Hantuchova SVK
Kevin Ullyett ZIM

Interesting and very encouraging stat from todays match...

Net Approaches 26 of 33 = 79 % Wow!!

This may be a sign of things to come (especially on the grass) and could stem from the recent improved performances with Chanda in the doubles. I do hope Dani mixes it up a bit more instead of trying to bash out a succession of winners from the baseline. We know she is good at that, but with her reach, she could be invincible at the net.

Dammit... oh well there goes that new song. Better find a new subject for it. In any case, I believe she'll get over this. She'll be better for it.

Dani's errors were what killed her. But her resolve and desire kept her in the fight and she is indeed a fighter. I hope that spirit never dims. She is young and very talented, her time will come.

btw, if I ever get to meet Nigel Sears, I'd better not be carrying my guitar because even if I do love that Yamaha more than life itself, I would smash it on his head the way Daniela serves. In any case, it seems she doesn't need him.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON! The Cocktail Party still believes in you DANIELA HANTUCHOVA!! You WILL win again.

Now that I got that off my chest, I think I'll crawl back into my cave now and hibernate a few days... God knows what might happen to my guitar and my PC if I ever step into the GM forum.

A darn close match. Its shame Daniella lost it at the end. I haven't seen her in matches since Australian Open, only normally watched the Slam anyway, but did she gained some height or what ? She seems taller to me.

She needs to work on her serve and try reduce the UE. She could used less UE in the last two deciding games. I think she can reduce UE, by improving her footwork more. Her stroke are magnificent though :worship:

Also with her frame, I would put her on weight program, working on those legs, then she'll be unbeatable :bounce:

I just watched this mind-consuming tape. The public starts cheering loudly for her in the begginning of the third set, when she's losing 0-2.
Daniela looks at them and says "Thanks a lot!".
I was wrong with the waving the racquet thing though, I was so tensed up yesterday! She was putting the strings in their place and then they switched to another camera.

Quotes from the post match interview:

-"From being 1-5 down in the third set that's when I started to play proper tennis. I told myself I will keep fighting til the end but unfortunately it didn't pay off and I couldn't close it out. I didn't go for my shots."

-"In the end it was just a couple of points that decided the match. Mentally I was not right there - I was not choosing right shots at the right time - sometimes I was going too much for it."

-"I proved physically I am really fit - I felt well on the court - it had nothing to do with the physical side - it was more the mental side that was not right there today.”

-"Today, I started well. If I had had a better shot selection I would have won today. I think both match I lost to her it was about me making too many mistakes."

-"At the moment I am not playing the way I'd like to - but I felt I was ready for the tournament."

Her comments prove that she’s able to see the situation in a realistic way.
C’mon Daniela!!!! :D
