I would love nothing more for our favourite to win but I'm very concerned about her lack of preparation. I wish she could've entered Strasbourg or Madrid even if it was to play doubles.

The VENUS Slam begins in Paris...

Don't worry about Venus' preparation. She is the most consistent player on tour. 8 of the last 11 Slams, she's been in the finals--NO ONE has that kind of record. Look she rebounded in Aussie. No play since early November--and she was the best player in the entire draw, until the finals [ ]

I am liking the Queen's Draw.

And here's what Mal said about Vee

Barbara-Dallas: Do you really see Venus as a contender with her recent injuries and lack of preparation? So many other players are playing well right now, especially on clay. She was an early loser at Miami this year. Do you think this is an indication of how the rest of her year will go? I am predicting a new Wimbledon champ

MaliVai Washington: Venus is a contender at any tournament she plays, regardless of her preparation because she's that good. Right now, there are probably three or four women in the world who will beat Venus in her current form. And after she gets through a couple of matches at the French, I think we'll see her form get better and better.

Open-Erratic Venus charges into the second round
By Pritha Sarkar

PARIS, May 27 (Reuters) - Venus Williams overcame a stuttering start to reach the second round of the French Open by beating fellow American Samantha Reeves 6-2 6-4 on Tuesday.

Williams, who has failed to win a grand slam since her triumph at the 2001 U.S. Open, was clearly below her best after being sidelined for the last couple of weeks with an abdominal strain.

But she refused to blame her injury for her performance.

"I was simply off with my timing today," she said. "I'm doing okay and took things easy."

The 22-year-old exchanged breaks with Reeves in the first four games of the match as both players struggled to find their footing as dusk fell over the Suzanne Lenglen court.

But the third seed finally found her range to reel off five straight games to clinch the opening set.

Her erratic play returned at the beginning of the second as she once again swapped breaks with the 108th ranked Reeves and had to fend off three break points before going 2-1 up.

Reeves kept pace with Williams throughout the set, but her resolve finally crumbled when she served to stay in the match at 4-5 down and sailed a forehand wide on her opponent's second match point.

"I was actually having fun out there and the more fun I have, the better I'll play," said Williams, who has lost the last four grand slam finals to her younger sister Serena.

"Each of those loses were very disappointing," said the four-times slam winner, ranked number three in the world. "I just can't get used to losing as I definitely want to be successful."

~end~

Yahoo
PARIS (AFP) - Third seed Venus Williams brushed aside her recent injury to advance to the second round of the French Open with a 6-2, 6-4 win over fellow American Samantha Reeves, a lucky loser, in 1hr 19min.

The holder of 29 WTA titles, Venus has seen a drop in form of late culminating in a pulled a stomach muscle before the German Open earlier this month, but said that she was feeling fit and ready to challenge younger sister's run of Grand Slam victories.

"Obviously she's working really hard to be in the position she's in. She also has it in her and it's great when you can have it in you and succeed the way she can," said Williams.

"I think a lot of things will be happening in my court. It's the second round now and I'm ready," said the former world number one, winner of four Grand Slam titles, but who has been runner-up to Serena in the last four.

Williams has played only four events this year and not won a WTA event since beating world number two Kim Clijsters of Belgium in Antwerp last February.

"I haven't played as many tournaments as last year. Obviously that would help me with my timing, but I'm here now and in the second round, that's what counts," added the American, who next meets Australian Evie Dominikovic, who defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-1.

Roland Garros isn't posting Venus' interviews. I know she's doing them, because I've read quotes in articles.

But what's up with Venus? Carillo was saying she's still injured. I certainly hope that's not the case.
