anyone keeping count of the # of TBs she's won this year?

A quick glance of
http://perlhth.tripod.com/cgi-bin/wta.pl?p1=953&p2=2003

makes it look like our hero is 8 wins and 2 losses (to davenport and Zuluaga in Australia) in Tiebreaks this year prior to today...so I guess she's now 9 and 2

Pretty damn good if you ask me.

------------------
Also...thanks Pinky for the advice on rep points...I had no idea about them, I gave AT69 a few for his berlin pics (I think I did??)

Good Luck to Dani for her next match :)

Tarsius

On Conchita: Still very capable of winning as she had shown of late and one of the best Clay court players in the tour. On Head to Head, its 1-1 with Daniela winning in the Fed Cup last year and Martinez winning in Roland Garros in 2001. It could be noteworthy that the scores in both matches show some very hard fought matches so Im expecting this one to go down the wire.... with Dani winning of course:bounce:

If Daniela comes out with her "A" game, there's no reason why she can't pull this off without a hitch.

Cheer her on for me, mates. I'm off to my last day of coach's training, and I gave myself a special little gift for my vacation: I'm taking a lesson with a former #49 on the ATP tour - Richard Matuszewski - to make my backhand more of a weapon, and generally look over my game.

Early cheers to Dani in today's match.

I've been having a bad time seeing her worried face. Despite that I can say that I've watched a well fought match, with some truly beautiful moments, and that Dani did all she could. me and my bro came home from a party and used my dad's car without permission. my bro's a little drunk so i drove instead. i was just a new driver then and was raining a little. in a nutshell, i rammed into some stupid tree. we got home 'round 4 or 5. we reached our rooms safely and quietly. then we heard our dad scream our names and we figured out that he's in the garage. i heard footsteps coming towards my room. so i tried to sneak out of the window. i lost grip. fell on the bushes. good thing it wasn't too high. i broke my left arm and leg and had scratches all over my body. everything's fine after some months but then i got this permanent soft spot on my leg which hurts like hell when you poke it.

forget about it. it's not like it's your fault y'know. funny thing is, doctors can do something about it. it's just a blood clot and they can remove it with a syringe. but i don't wanna coz i'm scared........to death. and not like it's fatal nor does stop me from doing a lot of things. i wouldn't even remember it was there if nobody will poke it. it's just a permanent bruise something like that! and i think i'm probably just using it as an excuse not to do stuff.

hey guys, I'm taking tennis classes next semester, any suggestions?

Yes. Decide what type of game you want to play. Be honest with yourself based on your physical ability. If you don't have quick, explosive speed, don't play Serve and Volley. If you haven't the physical endurance, don't try to be a counterpuncher, running from sideline to sideline. Once you have that figured out, stick to your guns on your style of play. Tennis is an alien sport. What I mean by that is that NOTHING is a natural movement, with the exception of running. Everything else is a learned ability, and the bio-mechanics in use tend to confuse the body. Don't get frustrated. For all the time I've been playing, I still take lessons, and still have areas (a lot of them actually) that need improvement.

In the area of equipment, play with the nearest thing you can handle to a "player's" racquet. These are smaller headed, lower powered racquets. Ignore the oversized, big-powered sticks. (We call them "Granny Sticks.") You'll outgrow them very fast, and have a lot of trouble trying to keep the ball on the court. Recommendations: Head i.Radical MP (NOT the oversize, but that's probably the one oversize you CAN use.) Head i.Tour Prince DB850, Wilson ROK, Volkl Tour 8 (Avoid the Tour 10. It'll be too tough for you to use.) or Catapult 10, or the Babolat Pure Control or Pure Control Plus (Dani's stick!) are just a few I can name. The Babs have a little too much power for me, but you might like them. I had the PC+ and gave it to one of my students as a birthday present. I couldn't keep the ball on the court, but then, I have a huge swing. I recently switched to the Head i.Prestige MP XL (that's Mid Plus eXtra Long!) from my beloved Wilson ProStaff 6.0 85, (which is the ULTIMATE player's stick) because my knee has limited my mobility somewhat, and I needed a more manuverable bat. These player sticks might be a little harder to use at first, but when they become easier, you'll have an advantage over the power stick users. If your local tennis shop has a demo program, try a lot of different racquets until one feels "natural" to you. It's hard to explain what that means, but you'll know it when you swing it. It just feels better than anything else you've used.

Tennis shoes. An absolute must. If you're going to be on clay, the sole pattern of sneakers will get you into trouble, and if you're on hard courts, you'll tears sneakers up. They're just not built for the pounding that tennis gives them, which will explain why tennis shoes are so much heavier than sneakers. One note: Nike Tennis Shoes run about a half-size small, so take that into consideration. I use the Head Games shoes, and love them. I'm into my second pair already, (they came out only a year ago) and find them very comfortable, with great support.

Get a couple of wrist bands. As we're coming into summer, they're invaluable for wiping sweat off the face, and keeping sweat from running down your arms onto your hands. There's nothing more embarassing than launching your bat across the court because it slipped out of your sweaty hands! Also, bring a small towel to the court to dry yourself on switch overs and set breaks. In fact, bring an extra shirt (or 3) extra socks, an Ace Bandage a couple of Band-Aids, a pen and paper (for writing down important information about your game) a hat, and anything else that will make you comfortable on the court.

Drink a TON of water while you're playing. I can't stress this enough. The sport is brutal at dehydrating you. Bring some bananas with you to the court, and eat a couple of bites every time you get water. They will provide both natural sugar for energy, and Potassium to avoid leg cramps.

Lastly: Try to avoid the Western, or Radical Western grip. Whilst it produces early good results, long term it hurts you. Semi-Western is the way to go, with Eastern as a close second, but Semi-Western will give you more topspin. (They'll explain about grips in the class.)

You're about to embark on the most frustrating yet fun sport out there. It humbles you, exhilarates you, pisses you off, and makes you thrilled, all at the same time. Don't try to do too much at first. The fundamentals are all-important, and learning them wrong makes your entire game bad. The better you have the basics, the faster you get to the great shots. If you ever have any questions, feel free to e-mail me, or post them. I'll be happy to answer all you have, and you never have to feel you're bothering me with them.

wow this is a jillion times more than what I expected, it's not like I am planning to become the next Andre Agassi but I do wanna play some tennis to keep fit since I know it's a very involving and complete sport for your body, and yes I have two questions:

1.- I was actually considering a Babolat, how much are they?

2.- We're playing on hard court and all I can afford is some Nike runners, will they be any good?

1.- I was actually considering a Babolat, how much are they?

2.- We're playing on hard court and all I can afford is some Nike runners, will they be any good?

1- Babs are not cheap. Here is the place on the net that is about the cheapest:
http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageRCBAB-BPCP.html
They're US $179.00. I don't know that that equates into in your currency. You could always try to find a used racquet also, but be warned: Babs are rare used, and you have to be careful they're not beat up.

If you can afford Nike Runners, then you can probably afford Tennis shoes. The Head Games I wear are US $61.95, which is actually quite inexpensive in this day and age. If you just buy running shoes, you might spend less short-term, but you will wear them out quite rapidly, forcing you to spend more long-term.

The initial outlay is a fair bit of gelt, but after the racquet, the only thing you need worrying about is stringing, and that equates to the old adage: "You string as many times a year as you play a week.", so if you don't play that often, it won't be too expensive. (Though, if you play like me, you get your stick strung every 2 months!) That said, the racquet is the single most important thing out there, so that's the one thing you shouldn't skimp on.

..Joe

PS: It's not that I'm trying to get you to be the next Agassi, it's just that I've seen far too many people spend over and over again to get to the same spot I've directed you from the beginning. This is actually the cheapest way to go! ;)

Racquets will last for years. The stringing will go, but I already mentioned that.

Tennis pick-up lines...

"Hey, wanna hold my fuzzy balls?"
"Wanna help me swing my bat?"
"Remember, the important thing is to grip the shaft firmly."
"I like Head..."
"Remember, racquet head speed is what gives you a fast serve. The motion is very important along with pronating the wrist on follow through. Wanna fuck?"

joe...

you're from the US right? well I stopped by "The Sports Authority" yesterday and I could not find any Babolats, all I saw was a bunch of Wilsons and Heads, a couple Yonex ones at about $250 (supposedly the kind of racquets Martina Hingis and Hewitt use, but I did not find them too cool anyway)

I went through the Titanium racquets and I saw a Head Ti S6, I had my mind set on a Babolat but when I took this racquet it was actually the racquet that took me, it had an incredible feel, light enough, wide enough but not too big, the frame was just perfect and the price, well a modest $199 US, not bad at all

Do you know where I can find a Babolat? I know you can order online (just go to Danny's profile on the WTA Tour page and click on "order equipment currently used by this player" or something like that) but I dont have a credit card, so I dunno what to do I still really want a Danny stick  (Danny-stick heheheh that was a bit redundant :p)

joegerardi
May 23rd, 2003, 07:28 PM
You won't find Babolats at any sporting goods chain store. Where are you located? That will help me figure out how you can get the Bab.

BTW: $199.00 US for a TiS6 is ridiculous! They were discontinued over a year ago, and I just got one for a student of mine for $49.95!

And just so you know, the Bab will not feel anything like the Head: It's a heavier, longer frame that has a higher swing weight (i.e., harder to swing because of it's weight) that requires YOU to create the power. This is a better way to go, but you might have a little bit harder time of it at first.

Go to:
http:www.tennis-warehouse.com. They are great people there. Call the 800 number, and I'm sure you can mail them a USPS money order, a bank check, or something like that to get the Bab. Get the total price, including shipping, and you can discuss stringing with them too. Tell them you want it string in the mid-range right now. They'll probably place the order, but put it on hold until they get the cash.

Also, Bab racquets' grips run about 1 size large, so if you normally get a 4 1/2, get a 4 3/8. Double check that with them, as I heard that Bab was going to rectify this issue. If you're not sure of your grip size, go with a 4 3/8. YOu can always add an overgrip or 2 if it's too small, but a grip too large will really mess up your game.

That's a good decision then. Tennis requires a commitment to play, and if you're not fully committed, it will be very frustrating. That goes back to what I was saying about it being an alien sprot to the body- so much of its movement is not natural, and getting used to them takes time.
