Dani receives a first round bye as usual and will play the winner of the Laura Granville/Babsi Schitt first round match. Next oppponent after that, should she win, could be Anastasia Myskina or Mary Pierce and then it looks like Kimmy Clijsters, so a fairly tough looking draw.

hehe, that's the 'Berlin Bear', it's a kind of symbol for Berlin. But I don't know why it's that coloured, normally it doesn't look that strange...

Concerning the site: Just wanted to start bitching at the organisers of the site that they didn't include an english version, but if you look at the lower right corner of your browser you should find the flags which lead you to the english versions :) Took me some time to find them, but I think most of you should have found them by now as well. However, if you still got problems to find something or want me to translate stuff, just ask :wavey:

And now Dani: Go rock our country :bounce: Germany will support you :worship:

I suggest you use the Cocktail Party-exclusive moogie translation service

I really like this draw. Dani gets to play some different faces for once, with a possible Kim Clijsters in the quarters, and Jennifer or Chanda in the Semis. With Venus probably an injury withdrawal after today's match, there's no way to predict into the finals yet.

..Joe

PS: A lot more of the site has been translated today.

So with the tragic news that Venus has withdrawn, the draw has somewhat changed. Dani's 2nd round opponent remains the same (Granville or Schitt), but her 3rd round opponent is now from Sugiyama ,Mikaelian, Pascual or Pierce with Myskina moving further down the draw.

Dani will play Babsi Schett in the 2nd round after she beat Laura Granville 3-6 7-5 6-3.

In the doubles, Dani's partner this week will be........wait for it........Chanda Rubin    They are seeded sixth and will play the very useful partnership of Babsi Schett and Patty Schnyder. I saw these two win the doubles title in Paris earlier this year and was very impressed with them. Given Dani's doubles results lately, I'm not too confident about this, although Chanda is playing well at the moment.

Good luck Dani!! :bounce:

They were saying she looked a lot more sprightly in the third Joe, jumping up and down before serving as usual, so maybe it looks like she worked it off :)

Chris Bradnam said that maybe Nigel would want her to pull out of the doubles now but that Daniela would say to him no I can't let my partner down!

And I always thought it was the other way round, that he insisted on her playing doubles! :D

I wouldn't trust what they're saying. My left knee is 75% crippled, and I can speak from experience in stating that it only feels like it's easing up. Natural Endorphins will numb it out until later.

Hi to all, I've been watching and taping it.... Second set has been hell, I started to think she would lose...! The commentator was talking about doing an intie after the match but Dani had to take care of the injured knee.
I'm very relieved I can watch Dani live again... she truly fights back!

I've been watching the tape of todays game - I'm up to the point of Dani's knee injury. It looks like she twisted it, so hopefully nothing too serious. However, before the match started, Chris Bradnam seemed to be putting over a point, one that clearly Nigel has made, and is that of Dani's weight. He has said they are concerned and that her fans should not worry. Fear not they said, the problem is being addressed.

Firstly, I'm pleased they have recognised that there is a problem and that they are working on it. But why has it taken so long to come to this conclusion? Maybe I'll believe Nigel when I see some results. However, having said that, from what I have seen so far today, it does not appear to be affecting Dani's game. The service looks alright and the ground shots look alright. The only evident problem is speed, but we know that is something Dani may never have and has nothing to do with her weight.

So fear not and keep the faith :)

Ah, but with Chanda Rubin having lost in singles today, one more match and Dani moves back into the 8th spot. A dilema for the girl...

But she should drop the doubles. Chanda's not much of a clay player, and that means Dani has to take up the slack, hence more strain on the knee. (This IS a clay tourney, right?)

May God have mercy on those of us who upset Pinky. Still, I'm exempt from this as I'm in her good books as of today!!

Anyway, back to the tennis and I've now watched the whole of todays game. The knee injury seemed a slight concern at the time but the way Dani played afterwards, I wouldn't be too concerned. It was quite a good game in the end, both players going for the win and both hitting some great winners. We know Dani doesn't move great across court and we also know that clay isn't her best surface. I do think Dani will struggle against a better quality player than Schett. For me, they seemed pretty evenly matched on this surface, but what we don't know is how much of an injury that really was. If it was a bad kind of injury, then it was a good win. If it was no kind of injury at all, then it was a hard fought win which should have been easier against someone like Schett. That said, a win is a win and I'm pleased and looking forward to her next win. :bounce:

I'm also pleased to say that with all of the talk about Dani looking thin, IMHO, I would say she looked slim but not so much that I would be worried by it. Yes, she is slimmer than last year, but I wouldn't say she looked ill or anything like that. As has been said before, yiu have to take into account that she is 6' tall and this kind of distorts the look. Maybe some recent pictures haven't been very flattering, but from what I saw today, she looks fine. She just needs to add a few extra pounds on but it not as desparate as it has been made out to be.

I would agree with most of what you are saying, iv always looked at her as thin but have always also not seen it as any concern. But when when i looked at her knees during the injury time-out, i honestly changed my opinion a bit. Her knees and her basic leg shape is slightly obscure. Now she's always been skinny, but even i, as a girl, will admit she has always had legs to be proud of. but today they weren't and thats got me worried, strange as it sounds!!

hi All,

Greeting from Berlin!...yes i am in the temporary abode of Miss. Hantu... and yes i did go to the open today... and will likely go tomorrow and day after. Saw the entire Dani. match...from the FIRST ROW... AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HAD MY CAMERA W/ me....

first and foremost, i am happy to state that it was a pretty competitive match and Dani IMHO played just fine... i think BS raised her game in the second set and Dani was a bit slow and Disheartened...

moreover, except for the obvious fact that she looked skinnier, she looked fine except for one observation that i dont care to make right now... (just very tired, will send a more detailed update later)...Her legs...which i believe should be insured by Lloyds of london for a priceless amount were fine...only MORE Defined.... (drool, drool)...and she was 'pushing tin' (kickin ass) in all 3 sets... again will send more coherent observations tomorrow...

lastly here is a bit of a Dani treat!...so u guys can judge for yourself.. IMHO...those legs look even sexier :)....did not realize that was a possibility..

there are more pix... quite a few more... but i have to download them from my dig. camera onto a laptop that does not really have the software, am missing the usb cord for it...yadayada yada... u get the picture ( puns intended ).... but if u ALL ( not including Graham, cause i already owe him one ;) tell me what a great guy i am ( even though u barely know me!!!!... i will publish more...Delicous Dani's....there u go .... i said it first ....Delicous Dani's.....:)))).

Resolution is not the best.. i had to REDUCE IT.. due to 100k restrictions by wtaworld...does anyone have suggestions how to get around that...

PS: Still dont know how to get on the emoticon express... and i am supposed to be a software expert...damn! there are so many i could use for this post...other than boring text....

this from reuters....this is bad news..hope she does not wake up w/ a sore knee :(

'..... Hantuchova also hit her right knee with the handle of her racket while attempting a sliced backhand to a bad bounce, and needed several minutes of on-court treatment.

She complained that the knock was getting more and more painful after the match, and her chances of further progress may depend on the condition of the knee when she wakes up in the morning.....'

Pressekonferenz mit Daniela Hantuchova Berlin, 06. Mai 2003

Daniela Hantuchova - Barbara Schett 6:3, 4:6, 6:3

A: Ja.

A: Ich denke, weil ich nicht all meine Chancen genutzt habe.

A: Nein, nicht wirklich.

A: Ja, ich denke schon.

F: Haben Sie diesen Schlag irgendwie geändert?

F: Es ändert also nichts an der Einstellung Ihnen selbst gegenüber?

A: Ich glaube, Justine hat Recht.

F: Es gibt also keinen bestimmten Grund dafür?
A: Nein, eigentlich nicht.

Pressconference with Daniela Hantuchova Berlin, 06. Mai 2003

Daniela Hantuchova - Barbara Schett 6:3, 4:6, 6:3

Q: Is it good to get through such a tough one?
A: Yes. It was a tough one. There were a lot of ups and downs. So, I am glad I got that one.

Q: Why were there so many ups and downs?
A: I think because I didn’t use all my chances. I had a little setback in the second set and she started to hit the ball better when she saw that. But then I came back in the third.

Q: What was the problem when you had the trainer on court?
A: When I hit the slice, I had hit the inside of my knee and it really hurt

Q: Have you done that before?
A: No, it was the first time.

Q: Is it o.k. now?
A: No, not really. It still hurts. But, I will have a bit of rest tomorrow and hopefully the physio will do its job and it will get better.

Q: Will you have it x-rayed?
A: I haven’t spoken to them yet. I think I will have some treatment.

Q: The usual, icing and ultrasound?
A: Yes, I guess so.

Q: Have you been doing anything different with that shot?
A: No, I think it was just a flat bounce and I hit it too close to my knee. It really hurt.

Q: When you come to a tournament like that and you know that neither of the Williams sisters is there, do you see it as an opportunity to do better or are you disappointed not to get a chance to play them?
A: When I come to a tournament, I always try to do mky best. I never look at the draw. I always concentrate on myselft and do my best on court. I don’t look who will come and who doesn’t. Obviously without the Williams sisters being there, it makes it more interesting, because everybody has a chance to win.

Q: So, are you not aware of them not being at a tournament?
A: O course I know whether they are there, but I don’t look so much ahead.

Q: So, it doesn’t change your feeling about yourself?
A: Of course, when they are here it makes it difficult. But then, I also enjoy having a chance of playing them.

Q: Last year, Justine Henin once said that one of the reasons players don’t do well against them is because they have too much respect for them. Do you think this is a right way of putting it?
A: I think Justine is right. Players think too much about their game. It is better to concentrate on yourself and on one’s own game.

Q: You have been struggling since the Australian Open: Is there a reason for it?
A: I wouldn’t put it that I have been struggling. I’ve been in 6 quarters and some semis. Maybe, there were some chances I missed, but I try not to think about that. I try to do my best and I think then, the results will come.

Q: So, is there any reason for that?
A: Not really. Maybe I lost some matches, I shouldn’t have lost. The people expect me to win more matches and that is more pressure. But, as I said, I don’t really think about it.

She's saying that her knee still hurt after the match. At least thats what the translation says on Altavista. Maybe moogle can translate this better.

Thanks for the pics....alltennis, please share a few more when you get a chance.

Hopefully (for you and Dani) you will get the chance to take more at her next match. (That would mean her knee is not still bothering her too much! and you got to see her play again....lucky!)

Get well Dani, play strong.

which was her result here in 2002.

hi all,

this from Yahoo! sports....if u read some of my earlier posts on this matter...looks like Nigel took the words right out of my mouth... well it seems i was on the right track....especially comments about 'young girls who are very impressionable at this age and the influence of fashion etc... etc...'

most importantly, always felt she was bright and had a strong head so she should be able to take care of this...'

IM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF SHE HAS CANCELLED OR IT PLAYING TODAY OR TOMORROW::: DOES ANYONE KNOW::::

thks,

Friendly warning for lightweight Hantuchova
Daniela Hantuchova, the world number nine from Slovakia, has been told to gain weight before next month's Wimbledon amidst gossip that she is at risk of becoming anorexic.

The 20-year-old has always been one of the most sparely built women on the tour but is now significantly below her fighting weight of 123 pounds (55.3 kilos), which has caused speculation that she has a problem.

The situation also bothers her coach, Nigel Sears, who has helped her become one of the world's most high profile players over the past two years.

"I am concerned that she is underweight," Sears admitted. "I would feel happier when that situation changes, and we have addressed it and we are working on it.

"Players have an appropriate performance weight and it is not good to be over or under that, and at the moment she is under that," added the Briton, clearly keen to rebut any suggestion that Hantuchova might be unwell.

"She is not anorexic," Sears emphasised. "She is fit and strong, but she is burning off more calories than she is taking in. This is a sensitive issue for young girls. They see fashion items which to wear they must not be a couple of pounds overweight. But we have to confront it."

Sears admitted that he and Hantuchova had taken "professional advice," over the matter, though he gave the impression that this was dietary and not psychological advice.

"It is a matter of balance between calories taken in and calories going out," he said. "It's sensitive but she's a serious girl and is responding well to it," he concluded.

"I am hoping she will get back to the right weight, and I would like to feel that by Eastbourne (June) and Wimbledon (June and July) there will be a difference."

Hantuchova won a tier one title for the first time in Indian Wells a year ago and climbed into the world's top ten for the first time last October. She has consolidated her place among the elite but has not pushed further upwards as quickly as some people expected.

Nevertheless, Hantuchova certainly hit the ball solidly enough and battled energetically to win her opening match in the German Open 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 against Barbara Schett, a former top ten player from Austria.

She now has a day off during which to prepare for her third round match against an as yet unknown opponent.

Yeah, heard so too. Kdamm definitely isn't the place to go out in the evening. I'm not that familiar with Berlin but my flat mate comes from there, so here's the best place to be in Berlin at the moment:
Go to the "Boxhagener Platz", which is located in the quarter called "Friedrichshain". Close to the "Boxhagener Platz" are two streets called "Gabriel-Max-Straße" and "Simon-Dach-Straße". There are a lot of bars, clubs etc., when my flat mate is in Berlin he goes there very often.
It should be best to take the subway to the station called "Frankfurter Tor" to get there.

Have lots of fun :wavey:
