Marie-Gaïané Mikaelian qualifizierte sich beim hochdotierten Sandplatzturnier in Berlin mit einem 6:1, 7:5-Sieg gegen die Japanerin Ai Sugiyama für die zweite Runde.
Sugiyama liegt als Nummer 17 im Ranking knapp 20 Positionen vor der 19-jährigen Westschweizerin, die nach dem Australian Open durch einen Ermüdungsbruch an der Rippe für mehrere Wochen ausser Gefecht gesetzt worden war.

Im zweiten Satz kam Mikaelian beim Stand von 5:2 und 40:30 zum ersten Matchball, doch die Japanerin nutzte ein Zwischentief der Schweizerin zum 5:5-Ausgleich. Erst danach machte die Waadtländerin mit einem weiteren Break den Sack endgültig zu, nach 75 Minuten verwertete sie den fünften Matchball.

In der zweiten Runde trifft Mikaelian entweder auf die Spanierin Virginia Ruano Pascual oder auf die Gewinnerin der French Open 2000, Mary Pierce (Fr). Beide sind wenige Positionen hinter Mikaelian klassiert. (si)


she was leading 6:1 5:2 40:30 :eek: i think it's really good that she didn't collapse after ai got back to 5:5, it shows that she's mentally much stronger than she used to be. :D :D

it's true, the loss was not a bad one at all. it's just that myriam's record this year is not very good so far... :sad:

and YIPIEEEEEEEE!!!! for marie's win over vivi :D :D she had a slow start, was never leading in that first set, but after that it looks like a real thrashing to me.

next up: hantuchova. i firmly believe MGM can do it; she beat hantuchova before (albeit before dani's big break, in basel 2001) and dani's not in good form right now. TAKE THIS CHANCE; MARIE!!!! :D
