FED CUP UPDATE
Canada defeats El Salvador to advance to World Group Playoffs
CAMPINAS, Brazil (TC) – The Canadian Fed Cup team is one step away from reaching the World Group for the first time since 1994, after defeating El Salvador 2-0 on Saturday.
In the first match of the day, Jana Nejedly of Palm Springs, Calif., set the tone with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Marcela Ivon Rodezno. Nejedly, who has won the most Fed Cup singles matches in Canadian history, posted an impressive 4-0 record during the week. In the No.1 singles match on Saturday, Toronto’s Maureen Drake continued her dominance, also jumping to 4-0 for the week with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory over Liz Cruz.
“I just wanted to get that match over with,” said Drake. “She couldn’t handle my pace, so there were no rallies and it was hard to get any rhythm going. Overall, though, it was a great week. We were expected to win, but we lived up to the challenge and came out victorious. Hopefully we’ll be able to do something in July.”
With the win, Canada now moves on to a World Group Playoffs, July 19-20. The draw will be held on Thursday to see who and where Canada plays. Like the Davis Cup format, the countries rotate playing at home, while those countries never having played each other will rely on a coin toss to see who will be the host country.
