Quarters berth for Molik
Thursday, 17 April, 2003

BUDAPEST, Hungary, April 16 AP - Australian Alicia Molik survived an upset-riddled day to cruise into the Budapest Grand Prix quarter-finals today.

No.3 seed Molik made short work of her second-round assignment, downing France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-1 6-2 to gain a place in the final eight. But it was a different story for her fellow seeds.

In first-round action today, Slovakian Henrieta Nagyova, the No.4 seed, was upset by Argentine qualifier Gisela Dulko 5-7 6-1 6-2 and No.7 Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain, a finalist here in 1999, crashed out 6-2 6-0 to local favourite Petra Mandula.

And in the second-round, Czech No.6 seed Klara Koukalova was bounced out 6-3 6-1 by Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain while No.8 Antonella Serra Zanetti of Italy succumbed to Slovakian Ludmila Cervanova 6-1 6-1.

Top seed Iva Majoli of Croatia also had to dig in before defeating Andreea Vanc of Romania 4-6 7-5 7-5 Wednesday in her first round clash at the $US110,000 ($A182,000) Budapest Grand Prix. The third set looked like a formality after the 1997 French Open champion rushed to a 5-0 lead, but the unseeded Romanian won the following five games before Majoli finally managed to wrap up the match.

No.2-seeded Magui Serna of Spain, winner of the Estoril Open last week, advanced to the second-round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Germany's Angelika Roesch.
