Henin-Hardenne Snaps Serena's Undefeat Streak To Win Charleston

By Brad Falkner

Justine Henin-Hardenne threw in the towel — then she threw everything she had at Serena Williams. Trailing 0-3 in the first set of today's Family Circle Cup final, Henin-Hardenne arose from the courtside couch, tossed her towel down and proceeded to produce some spectacular tennis to score a 6-3, 6-4 victory and snap Williams' 21 match winning streak.

It was Williams' first defeat since another Belgian — third-ranked Kim Clijsters — beat her in straight sets at the WTA Tour-season ending Championships last November.

Henin-Hardenne made her Family Cup Circle debut one to remember by capturing the tournament title.

The second-seeded Henin-Hardenne won six straight games to seize the first set. Trailing 1-3 in the second set, she rallied again and evened the set at 4-4.

Serving at 30-15, Henin-Hardenne hit an ace down the middle — her first ace of the match — then took a 5-4 lead when Williams netted a crosscourt forehand.

Serving to stay in the match and keep her undefeated streak alive Williams lashed a running backhand well wide to face double-match point at 15-40. She saved one match point, but netted a mid-court backhand to suffer her first defeat of the season.
