Well at least you waited until the match was over this time to start your gloating.

Congratulations to Justine - this is actually her biggest win to date IMHO.

Commiserations to Serena, but a final loss in a tier I is hardly something to be ashamed of.

Thank you, Justine! A good sign that there is more depth in the women's game - now at least Serena and Agassi on the men's side have one loss to their name this year. And no, I'm not going to jump on the Henin bandwagon, since my username already gives some hint of my regard for her.

Good job Justin. I am not really a fan of her (although I don't dislike her either) but her win is huge. She should recieve like 500 bonus points just for defeating somebody like Serena.

Serena smiled like she was relieved or something.
Justine raised her arms and yelled: Allez!
Justine then went on to kiss her coach, but Serena didn't look too sad.

OMG Justine!!! I never would've thought especially in straight sets. It was obvious Serena wasn't at the top of her game but Justine played very well MAKING Serena play those shots and that's SO smart on a clay court! Congrats to her!!!!

Hendouble
Apr 13th, 2003, 07:37 PM
Hmm... I suspect her reaction was effusive, but not ecstatic. I'm sure it's a good feeling to know you could be the last player for quite some time to beat Serena. You've got to hand it to Henin, whenever she plays the Williamses on clay she either beats them or gives them a real run for their money; that's twice she's beaten Serena in a clay-court final, and if she hadn't had that horrendous choke against Venus in Amelia Island last year where she was absolutely slaughtering her, she would have beaten both sisters in clay finals.

oh don't worry Justine will never credit from people who don't understand the game. She played awesome. So calm and really making great shot selection and just totally DISMANTLED Serena's confidence. It takes good play to do that. Serena is a great champion and knows when the opponent is dangerous. :D

It was as if Justine understood what Serena was planning to do next...
When Serena hit crosscourt forehands, Justine was already there.
I think Serena would've beaten anyone today including her sister, Justine just played it smart and she retrieved so many shots, hence the win in straight sets.

Sorry if my first post was just plain rubbish hehe, I was like in total extasy! :)

All props to Justine, who played beautiful, clay court tennis.

But today's match helped prove a couple of things in my opinion.

One is that while Serena has now become a mature, very accomplished player, in the end, what separates her from the pack is her serve. Big serving is what separates must big girls from the pack. Without those free points off big serves, they are beatable.

The other thing it proved is that no one is unbeatable, nor will anyone set the new standard in tennis, etc., etc. etc. Those are all things the press likes to say, because it gives them something to write about. But it is almost never true.

There's an old cowboy saying:

Weren't never a horse that couldn't be rode and never a rider who couldn't be throwd.

Yes Serena's serve is a major part of her game...but it had nothing to do with her loss today...she lost because she playing like shit and was spraying balls all over the court...most of them TRULY UE's.

Duh...she is beatable...she has been beaten many times...

Serena never said she will not lose a match the entire year. That was her goal and she knew that it would be near impossible to achieve that. She just wants to be the best that she can be.

yeah serena played like crap today but oh well one can't be pefect all the time.

Is this another sentiment to discredit Henin-Hardenne's win? Because leading the first set at 3-0 is crap and leading the second at 3-1 is crap. I don't have doubt that Justine can beat Serena at Serena's best. Berlin proved that. In this match, it was all Justine. Justine wouldn't let Serena get in her groove and Justine took advantage of that. I don' think it's fair to discredit the success of others just because we expected the #1 to win. I don't hear anyone saying Shaughnessy, Hantuchova, or Bovina having played crap against Harkleroad. Why now when Justine just defeated Serena?

Shap-Half.. here's the problem: When Serena beats Justine, it is always because Serena is so great. No one every looks at Justine and says she wasn't playing well. No. People give credit to Serena for making her opponent look bad.

So when Justine wins.... then it is.... oh, Serena wasn't at her best.

Justine isn't always at her best either.

Hey guys.. I was actually at the FCC and saw the match. Justine played outstanding. Serena did not have a dismal performance by any means but Justine was just too good for her today.

It seems as if Serena has a problem with the heavy spin one-handed backhand.. She was netting quite a few of those.. On so many points she just looked stunned. I was able to watch both practice before the match and Justine just looked as though she had it today.

Congrats Justine!!

It was so exciting to see it in person!!! :)

Well done Justine. yes Serena did not play well, but Justine did, and it was Serenas movement on the clay that hurt her and it was Justines execlent movement that did. I think Justine is a serious contender now, if she can just remember what she did.
