View Full Version : Evie gets lucky again, with surprise Main Draw berth!

Apr 13th, 2003, 04:51 AM
Originally in the Qualifying Draw as the 4th seed Evie was suddenly taken out and put in the main draw after Anna Kournikova withdrew.

There was a theory that the top 3 seeds had played or begun their first qualifying match but this appears not the case.

Is it possible that Evie was ranked higher than the others Cargill, Petrova and Weingartner at the time of the last revised commitment list and that is why she got in ahead of the others???

Anyone have any theories?????

Also exactly how many events has Evie got into in the last year or 2 as a lucky loser or with a late withdrawal??

lol, she sure gets lucky with these things :o I remember she got in at the 11th hour at Rg last year and also at Wimbledon (when ASV pulled out)...also a couple LL spots as well, lets just hope she can take advantage! She has a qualifier, so here's hoping...even though there are some good players in there!

Go Evie :)

She's in one of the weaker parts of the draw. Neither Hantuchova or Stevenson have been on good form recently, and Black's ranking has certainly dropped quite a lot over the last few months.

Evie's first round opponent in Akiko Morigami.

Tough, but winnable.

Come on Evie, get a win under your belt :)

Well I got the tough part right. SHe lost 2-6 2-6

What a pathetic effort. Akiko is a good little player, but that scoreline doesn't do Evie any justice at all. I wonder how the relationship with her coach is? Wonder if he is still in the picture...she said they were working on becoming more aggressive, but we are yet to see the fruits of that labour.

Well it looks like she will make RG on her own merit, but I can't see her winning a match unless she draws Stevenson again. She'll most likely have to qualify for Wimbledon as she loses a few points from a couple Japanase $50K challengers in the next few weeks...

I don't know what to say. The scoreline says pathetic, however it may have been closer than that in reality.

Don't know what is going on with Evie, but she needs to get her act together before she falls out of contention totally for GS.

She is a better player than her results are indicating.
