:wavey: I was thinking back on Ashley Harkleroad's match that she played the other day and WOW! I mean she made 2!.. only 2! unforced errors in a long match. This is a great achievement!

So this has me wondering..has anyone ever made one ue? or elzero ue's in a match? If so who has?

With today's power game I doubt it.

Hi Irma, hmm I wonder what has been Martina Hingis's least amount number of ue's in a match though? I was thinking of Hingis when I read about Ashley's 2 unforced, but I don't seem to recall or reading it anywhere that she made only 2 . Is this a record in the Open Era that Ashley made? Am I the only one a bit thrilled by this stat? Amazing!

Agassi did 0 unforced errors on the third set vs Al Aynaoui at Miami 2003 pretty unreal :o

yea but that was a set...not two sets. Granted, it is probably tougher to pull off 0 errors for the men's game than it is for the women's though.

Yeah I watched that match petosp, but the ladies are winning this so far... cause Ashley made only 2 ue's. WOW.

Mary Pierce has 2 against Monica Seles I believe in FCC in 2000 , someone correct me if I am wrong but i am sure she didn't make more than 5 ;) that is impressive esp against a tiop player

Guga made only 13 UE's in a 5 set match vs Max Mirnyi in 2001 coming back from 2 sets down.
Guga hardly made any errors in the last three sets

Is anyone up on stats from any of Chris Evert's matches? I'll bet that during the six years of her 125-match clay court unbeaten streak, she had a few matches where she made very few errors. Like Hingis, the foundation of her game was consistency...

That Pierce stat against Seles is unreal, though! Never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself

yep Mary made 2 UE's against Monica. She had 9 errors against Serena in that 2000 Indian Wells match and had something like 3(?) errors against Martina Hingis at the 1995 Canadian Open.

Guys read the post......has any woman ever won a match not striking an unforced error? Not 1 or 2 or 3 but ZERO?

(sorry in a bad mood)

The only person I can think of that has done this in the past several years was Pauline Betz in 1943. Not only did she not hit an unforced error, but she did not lose a point in the match.

The last person to do that that I think that we know of.

And as someone also mentioned, in the Lenglan/Moody era, I am sure winning matches without hitting unforced errors was done all the time

In Those where the days, they talked about matches, called them golden matches, I think, when the winner won EVERY BALL in the match.

There were matches in the 50s where a woman didn't lose a point in her match.

No, it's interesting to talk about matches with very few errors. Not many people knew one where there was no errors, so it's understandable. It's not off-topic.

Nope ;) - She was very close, only 1 unforced error

hmmmmmmm you should double check that sammm144. In terms of record books, Pauline Betz was the last woman or player for that matter to actually win a Golden match.

Bill Scanlon would win a golden set in the 80s, but she was the last reported player to probably accomplish the rarest thing you can do in tennis.

Sorry Messenger was just in a bad mood........

Dawn, I have to believe this is an all time record for fewest unforced errors in the Open era! Well done Ashley! :D And she did it against a good player in Elena Bovina who has tremendous power off of both sides. And that makes Ashley's record even more amzing! She wasn't playing against a powder puff player. She was playing against a big girl with enormous power.

Mmm, not sure about this one... I saw that match and remember Venus making a fair few UEs. I mean, Jane (whose surname is O'Donoghue  ) managed to get two games ;)

Last year, Elena Bovina only lost two points in the second set of a match against Angelika Roesch, so in that set she must have made either two or fewer UEs.

Mary Joe only made 1 unforced error in the third set of her 6-3 1-6 6-0 win over Serena at the 99 French. I know the stats were right coz i have the match on tape, and watch it whenever I miss my all time fave (jelena is a close 2nd)

No, I think it is right, because I actually was going to come in here and post that match because Venus had only 2 UFE. The Wimbledon stats had that as her UFE then, and I guess they still have them as her stats now.

I don't know the entire match, but Hingis had 0 or 1 UFE in the first set at the 2000 Chase against Julie Halard-Decugis. She won the match 6-2 6-3, but I don't recall the entire match.

One day I believe that Nathalie Dechy will go a set, if not an entire match, with BOTH no winners and no unforced errors. I wonder what it's like when she plays Anna Pistolesi; there are probably a lot of sore necks near center court from watching all the 15-20 shot rallies!

Unfortunately as unforced errors are subjective I don't know how you can have a reliable basis for any record? Imagine the argument if someone marks you as committing one on the last point of a match.... And even if you believed the figures, as most courts never have anyone calculating ue at all its pretty certain that the best performances on this statistic will never have been recorded anyway.

I could be wrong, but it seems like I remember a match at the French open where Mats Wilander made only one UE in an entire three set match! Anybody else remember that?

Nice to see Pauline Betz get a mention. And if you're wondering how memorable five GS singles titles is 50 years on, ask yourself how much you know about Pauline.

I think Martina Hingis had only 1 error in one of her matches. I don't remember when though.
