This is from an email I sent to a friend tonight about the matches I saw today. Just pretend Bethany is Bethanie... cause I've been misspelling her name. and I'm too lazy to go back and correct everyone.

Now, I had to miss some of the matches you were interested in because I wanted to see Bethany Mattek against Nicole Pratt. here were two qualifiers -- one a young fighter, and the other a veteran trying for a comeback. I had watched Bethany, or "B" as her coach calls her, in her qualifying matches and knew her to be a gritty fighter who didn't give up. I thought that could make for an interesting match.

So it did. It went 3 hours and 12 minutes. Nearly all of them hard fought except for the two injury timeoutsl. Bethany is so much fun to watch. She comes to the net and even serves and volleys... I know that is hard to believe, but it is part of her game. She wants the short ball and works her way to the net as well and puts away some tremendous volleys when she gets there. Her big weakness is that she will put backhands into the net... I mean low into the net for apparently no reason. Bethany was up a break in the first set and looked to be going great guns, and then got careless on her own serve to be broken. The set went to a tiebreak and there were minibreaks back and forth, but finally, Pratt won it 8-6. Already the match was over an hour long. But so much excitement and fun!! I didn't want to leave to check out Stevenson on court 2... and just as well because... well just because.

Second set, Bethany got an early break. She was looking good, but while ahead... I think 4-2, she called for a trainer and had her feet attended to. My seatmate verified with his binoculars that she had blisters and bad ones at that on her right foot.. toes. And then they doctored the second foot as well. At one point Nicole was up looking at the feet and talking and pointing. My seatmate was laughing and saying... yeah, she's saying, oh you'll never be able to play with feet like that.

Anyway, she managed to hold serve and seemed to be testing her feet a little bit. At first she had a little hop in her step like she was trying to avoid limping, and then she was running again and charging the net and everything seemed fine as she won the second set. All through the set there's plenty of Come Ons and fist pumping and looking at her coach.

Again, an early break in the third set, and then another break. It's looking swell for our girl. The games are always close though and very few are won at love or 15 all through the match. Bethany again got careless on her serve, and lost one break. Plus Nicole is playing some great shot and getting crowd support. She even takes a bow when the crowd that has been totally behind Bethany cheers one of her shots.

Then when Nicole was serving Bethany took a nasty fall... nasty.. She laid face down on the court breathing fast and shallowly. Her legs were writhing as one does when in pain. Immediately when she went down, her coach... siting a few rows away, called... Get up B. She didn't respond. A linesman brought her towels, but clearly she didint' want towels. She was just lying there face down. The umpire was down looking at her too, but there was apparently no trainer to be had. Her coach called again. Try to get up! Bethany responded firmly and clearly, Fuck you, [coach's name]. But about 3 minutes later her legs quieted and she rolled over and got to her feet and walked without limping excessively to her chair and put her left foot up on a chair. The trainer came and taped her foot. Don't know where the trainer had been during the previous 7 minutes! I mean, I was almost crying looking at her lying there on the court.

Then she was up, and limping a bit and lost that game. There's only a one break cushion now, but she also has only to win 2 more games for the victory. Drama on her serve. But suddenly she is fighting and running and charging the net again. Nicole is pissed. She is muttering behind the baseline... one woman thought she said something about "drama queen" And then during Nicole's serve, Bethany trots to the sideline and changes her racquet. Nicole is steaming now. "Are you ready now?" "yup" "Are you sure everything is all right?" (heavy scarcasm) "Perfect" is the reply. And then the game is on. Fight fight fight. deuce. match point duece match point deuce. and then it's finally over as Nicole once again hits out on the sideline.

There was a nice firm handshake at the net. I had wondered if there would be one at all. Hope Bethany recovers because next up is Mirza.

Mattek makes winning a fashion statement

Wisconsin native wears MIMA/USTA Classic triumph well

BY MIKE CHERRY
FLORIDA TODAY

INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH - Often in Bethanie Mattek's pro tennis career, she earned attention for what she wore onto the court as opposed to what she did once on the court.

That is why her title at the second MIMA Foundation/USTA Pro Tennis Classic was critical to her and the revamping that her game is undergoing this year.
"It's a big step for me," Mattek said.

Sunday on a warm afternoon at Kiwi Tennis Club, the fourth-seeded Mattek won her first pro singles title since December 2005, defeating 18-year-old sixth seed Olga Govortsova 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in a final that lasted
2 hours and 2 minutes.

A crowd of about 225 watched the Mother's Day pair of finals at the $50,000 event. Mattek won $7,315 and enough ranking points to push her near her career best of No. 101.

Showing more variety in her game than the groundstroke-pounding, 5-foot-11 Govortsova, Mattek, 22, did not disappoint the crowd in terms of apparel.

Known for wearing a
soccer-style outfit that featured knee-high socks in her first-round Wimbledon Centre Court match against Venus Williams last summer, Mattek wore a teal bandana and a multi-colored skirt with ruffles. She told the crowd during the post-match ceremony that the skirt was one designed more for beachwear than tennis.

"I live in Miami," Mattek said when asked about her fashion sense. "I like to be different. I think a lot of the personalities on the tour aren't shown."

In the doubles final that followed, the third-seeded pair of American Angela Haynes and Monique Adamczak from Australia defeated the United States duo of Carly Gullickson and Lindsay Lee-Waters, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The winning team split $2,660.

For her effort, Govortsova, whom Mattek said plays similar in style to Lindsay Davenport, won $3,900. The hard-hitting baseliner has used her flat, thumping shots to win a pair of $25,000 events and finish second in one other $50,000 tournament this year. Ranked No. 172, her rating has jumped about 200 spots this year. She will return to her Minsk, Belarus, home this week, then play in a $100,000 event in Istanbul, Turkey, in two weeks.

"I was kind of tired after yesterday," said Govortsova, who Saturday defeated second-seeded Edina Gallovits. "I went for a run after and was cramping. She (Mattek) had an easy match yesterday."

True, Mattek dropped just one game in defeating qualifier Chanelle Scheepers in her semifinal. Still, the fatigue of which Govortsova spoke could have been as much mental as physical.

Down 0-1 in the final set, Govortsova disagreed with a baseline call that could have allowed her to hold her serve. Four Mattek break points later, Govortsova double-faulted for the critical service drop. The third set was completed in 33 minutes in the match that included 11 service breaks.
"Maybe my fitness level needs to get better," Govortsova said. "She doesn't make a lot of mistakes."

A former resident of Wisconsin who moved to Florida at age 22, Mattek took the lead after a first set that featured seven breaks. Like a hot slugger, Govortsova found rhythm in the second shot and punished Mattek, who took a five-minute medical break to care for foot blisters before the third.
As far as strategy, Mattek said her plan was to make Govortsova hit either high or low shots. Nothing, in other words, in her strike zone. Mattek's use of a slice backhand kept the ball low for Govortsova's two-handed backhand.

"I see it now as a chess match," Mattek said of recent play.

Mattek and her new coach, Jason Fransen, have worked on numerous changes in her strokes and playing style. That paid off at Kiwi with her first title since she won a $50,000 event about 18 months ago in Palm Beach Gardens. Mattek has reached the quarterfinals of a main-tour WTA event the last two years, doing so in February in Memphis.

After defaulting in last week's $50,000 event in Charlottesville, Va., during the first round, Mattek also showed gallons of competitive juices in rallying from a set and 3-0 down during her quarterfinal MIMA win against Estefina Craciun. Mattek's next event is the qualifying tournament for the French Open. She will hit the red clay with plenty of confidence following her five-match run in Indian Harbour Beach.

The day was significant in another way to Mattek. Her mother, who lives in Boca Raton, attended the final.

Bethanie made the correct decision to just play the doubles and not just play two qualy matches the day after an intense tournament and especially after the many 3 setters at the French. You would think though they would have offered her a spot in the main draw, especially with her being such a hot player on Tour now & with Wimbledon next week. But, it is better they didn't for Bethanie so she has more rest and some good grass practice in the doubs. She will get her doubles ranking from 25 to top 20 this week before doubles seedings at Wimbledon too which will make a big difference too prize money wise and points by being a seed. Hopefully she doesn't play again with Mriza for Wimbledon or any other tournament, just a liability with her injuries.

PlayersB. Mattek Interview - 27 JuneFriday, 27 June 2008

Bethanie Mattek def. Marion Bartoli 6‑4, 6‑1

Q. How does it feel to reach this point at Wimbledon for you?
BETHANIE MATTEK: This is a pretty cool feeling. I mean, this is my best result in a Grand Slam by far obviously. You know, last year it was the first time I won a round actually, so this is a pretty amazing feeling.
You know, it was pretty cool being able to beat the finalist last year today. You know, she's a good player and she's tough on grass. I think it's one of her better surfaces. So, you know, I'm really excited.

Q. How about playing Serena next?
BETHANIE MATTEK: I haven't played Serena in a couple years. You know, again, she's a tough competitor. You know, I'll have to be on my A game, for sure. I think it will come down to serving big and then seeing who can break.

Q. You limited her to the same number of games that Venus allowed her in the final last year. That has to give you a lot of confidence.
BETHANIE MATTEK: I didn't know that stat actually. No, you know, you kind of forget about the score. I was just actually playing each point. A couple times I forgot the game score, and I'm glad they have them up on top. I had to look to make sure I went to the right side of the court to return.
What can I say? I just did my best.

Q. What were you thinking during her extended medical consultation? I know they were checking various body parts. You looked like it was hard to stay warm. Was that a challenge for you?
BETHANIE MATTEK: Yeah. Actually, for some reason that was when all the clouds came in. It dropped like 10 degrees, so I just had a bunch of towels. I was really just trying to stay warm.
Then they told me that, you know, she had two separate medical timeouts, so I knew I had like six minutes there.
So it was, you know ‑‑ it can be tough there because you can start to think. I was up 5‑4, closing out the set. It was really tough.
I just focused on actually staying warm and just being busy doing something rather than just sitting there and thinking about my situation.

Q. It is suggested that if an opponent takes an injury timeout that the other player should be able to hit or talk with a coach. What are your thoughts about that as a possibility?
BETHANIE MATTEK: I think you're actually allowed to go hit serves and stuff. I just chose not to. And I know that in the WTA events you are allowed to talk to your coach in between.
Again, for me, it's not my personal preference. Almost talking to a coach kind of gets me out of my zone, so I'd rather just kind of be out there by myself and stick to my own game plan.

Q. It true you moved to Arizona?
BETHANIE MATTEK: True. I moved out to Phoenix. I started working out there after US Open last year. I took three months off and just did fitness, no tennis.

Q. What facility are you working out of?
BETHANIE MATTEK: It's actually called Ultra Fit. My trainer is Jay Schroeder out there.

Q. The last few weeks you played at a real good level, Birmingham and here. Had an okay Roland Garros, but not great. Apparently you separated with your coach. Take us through the last few weeks, what's been working for you.
BETHANIE MATTEK: I think, you know, the last couple ‑‑ even the last couple months I think I've stepped up a couple levels. It's really come down to me just being mentally tough in my matches. I think what's tough about me is I just make my opponents play every single point. Regardless if I hit a winner the previous point or if I miss the previous point I'll show up for the next point.
I think that's really what's carried me through a lot of these matches, especially a lot of the close ones.

Q. Are you late to that grinder mentality?
BETHANIE MATTEK: I think so. 'Cause before I played a really aggressive game. I still try and be aggressive, but I would find myself letting a few points or games go by. All of a sudden I'd be down 3‑0 or something. So this year I really focused on not letting that happen, and just if I found myself in a funk just to take my time in between points, really think about my strategy, and then play the point, so...

Q. It's a little unusual, unless you're injured, to take three months off and just do fitness, not play tennis. Can you talk about that thinking, what you did, how much fitter you got.
BETHANIE MATTEK: Basically I was a little bit injured after US Open. I had some problems with my knees actually the whole year. I had pretty bad tendinitis. It just wasn't enjoyable for me to play. I couldn't run. That's kind of my game, as well.
I move pretty well. I'm athletic out there. And if I can't do that, you know, it's half my game gone. So I really wanted to get in shape. That's why I decided to take those couple months off. I thought it would be worth it. I actually got in a lot better shape.
Right now I've played, you know, I don't know how many matches in a row. If I would have done this last year I would have been in a stretcher going off the court.

Q. What kind of training did you do? Low‑impact?
BETHANIE MATTEK: Yeah, you actually don't do any running, no cardio. Basically it's a lot of ‑‑ it's called ISO extremes. You hold positions for like five minutes at a time and stuff like that. It's really low impact, but you're training at a hundred percent all the time.

Q. Sounds like Yoga.
BETHANIE MATTEK: Yeah, exactly. It's a lot of Yoga stuff in there.

Q. You obviously have never been afraid to show your whimsical side to us. Have you come to a place in your career where you feel like you have to take yourself more seriously, and your career more seriously?
BETHANIE MATTEK: You know what, I don't think ‑‑ it's not that I didn't take my career serious, or even myself. I'm still outgoing, like to show my personality. But, you know, I really wanted to have my tennis come through. That's why I've kind of toned down some of my outfits for this tournament.
I get players coming up to me and they're all disappointed in me. I'm like, Guys! You know, it's still something I like to do. I still have a bunch of outfits. I have a clothing sponsor now. You know, it's just for right now I'm focusing on my tennis.

Q. Would you also talk about the early part of your career. Did you consider going to college? What were those first fewer years like for you?
BETHANIE MATTEK: After high school I actually did get a lot of offers from some colleges to play tennis, and it really was never in my scope to go there. I mean, like I said, I had the option, but it just didn't really fit with the goals I set for myself. That's why I decided to turn pro at such a young age.

Q. Do you regret that at all? It was a slog.
BETHANIE MATTEK: Not at all. You know what, I've had some great experiences. I talked to some of my friends that have gone to college. You know, at some points I'm like, Wow, I missed out on all the friends and all this stuff. At the same time I got to travel the world, meet new friends, do something I love. You know, I can always go back. That's something I will do after my career.

Q. Are you spending any time in Boca? What is your Boca connection now?
BETHANIE MATTEK: My parents actually still live in Boca. Any time I'm on the East Coast I'll go there, spend time with my family. I live literally five minutes away from Evert Tennis Academy. I have all that open to me.

Q. Djokovic said he's not going to do any more imitations. Are you telling the tennis world you may show up at the Open in a conventional outfit?
BETHANIE MATTEK: Djokovic said that? No way. Wow. I won't go that far. I still have some outfits. I still have some stuff in my suitcase that I can pull out, so...

Q. Has it been fun playing the fashion card?
BETHANIE MATTEK: It really has. I mean, I've gotten in trouble with it. I've not gotten in trouble with it. I've shocked some people, and then I'll come out wearing something preppy and I've shocked more people doing that, I think, too.
You know, again, it's something that's fun for me. Off the court, I'm the same way. I like to dress really funky and creative. It's just part of me, I guess.

Q. And the places that you got spanked the most for being a naughty girl and wearing something awful?
BETHANIE MATTEK: I think every tournament somebody said something bad about it. So that's fine.

Q. When you were at the Evert Academy did you work personally a lot with Chris? What kind of relationship do you have with her?
BETHANIE MATTEK: Actually, I did. Like I said, I haven't actually trained with the academy for a few years. But initially I went there for a few years when I was 12, 13, 14. Chrissy was actually on the court a lot. I was good friends with her. Even when I'll see her at the courts, we'll have a conversation. I think she's a great lady. You know, I think she's busy with her sons, though.

Q. Were you invited to the wedding this weekend?
BETHANIE MATTEK: No, I wasn't. I didn't even know.

That's a great interview. :) I love players with personality on court, but at the same time I'm glad that Beth (and Jelena actually!) have toned it down a bit and seem more business like. It seems to be working! :bounce:

Bethanie let her tennis do the talking yesterday. :worship:

Double post, never mind. I really enjoyed watching this match courtside. The outcome was inevitable fromt he start so I wasn't really nervous. All I wanted was for Beth to play her best and put up a fight, which she did. :worship: The girl's got spirit and fight, most definitely. Holding serve from 0-40 down. Oh yeah.

Onwards and upwards!! :bounce:

Beth might play in Germany next week. She is 3 out of the MD and is listed as MDO ( Main Draw Only ). MDO means that she will not play qualis if she can't get into the Main Draw directly. :)

Bethanie Mattek was a former fugitive from the fashion police at the All England Club when she stepped on court last summer and overwhelmed 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the fourth round for the first time.

Mattek, who generated international headlines for the funky eccentric ensemble she wore on Centre Court vs. Venus Williams in 2006, didn't play for the Rosewater Dish but did receive a life-changing ring at Wimbledon: boyfriend Justin Sands, who had proposed to her prior to the French Open, present her with a 5.5 carat engagement ring at Wimbledon.

"When Wimbledon came, that's when he gave me the rock. He's such a sweet guy," Mattek says of Sands, a former football player, who is president of JPS Insurance. "I was driving from Eastbourne to London and I met him there. Basically we hadn't seen each other in a while and we rented a house in Wimbledon Village. We're carrying our stuff in and when we got upstairs he kind of taps me on my shoulder and hands me a box and says 'I got something for you.' That was the official rock. So that was really cool and very special it happened right there at Wimbledon."

The couple married on Saturday, November 29 in a sunset wedding at Edgewater Beach Resort in Naples, Florida.

The 38th-ranked Mattek — who is the third highest-ranked American woman behind second-ranked Serena Williams and sixth-ranked Venus Williams — skipped the Australian Open this month as she's taken time out from tennis to train, rehab a left hip injury and enjoy married life.

Now living in Phoenix, Mattek is hoping to represent the United States in next month's Fed Cup quarterfinal between the host United States and visiting Argentina, which will be contested on a hard court in Surprise, Arizona (http://www.tennisweek.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=6623420) — about a 25-minute drive from Mattek's home. If she is selected, it would mark Mattek's Fed Cup debut along with the debut of new U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez.

An all-court player, who has fast hands at net, the free-spirited Mattek is a crowd-pleasing presence known to chat with fans after (and sometimes during) matches. She's played doubles with current World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in the past and produced her finest season in 2008 as she reached her first career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles final in Quebec City (falling to Nadia Petrova), was a semifinalist at Birmingham and Los Angeles and scored her first career top-10 win in upending Bartoli.

Tennis Week caught up with Mattek today moments after she completed practice for this interview in which she recounts how Sans proposed to her, discusses the impact marriage has had on her life and career and looks ahead to her return to the Tour.

Tennis Week: Bethanie, congratulations on your marriage, it's exciting news. How did you meet your husband and how did he propose to you?
Bethanie Mattek: We actually have a mutual doctor out in Pennsylvania, which is how we met. Justin was training for football and he had been going to the doctor for five years and I had been going to the same doctor and we just never met. I was going to do some training and my doctor gave me Justin's number and told me to call him when I got to Phoenix. I was hoping he'd be kind of cute before I met him. I was thinking 'If he's hot, then it's a win-win' (laughs). So I went out to Phoenix, we met and he was really cute. At that time we just talked and we were training. Things got serious around the French Open. He actually came over to Paris for the weekend right before the main draw and he proposed to me there, but then he had to leave. It was really cool because I didn't think he was gonna come to Paris, but he surprised me and came. And then he came back when I went to London for Wimbledon. He kind of gave me the official ring there so that's pretty much how the whole thing progressed. I met him last year in October (of 2007) and then come April we started dating and then he gave me the ring at the French Open so it was pretty quick, but I knew he was the one.
Tennis Week: I'm always told Paris is the city of romance is that why he chose to propose in Paris before the French Open?
Bethanie Mattek: Yeah, it was really cool that he did there. You know the funny thing is he's not the biggest romantic in the world. I love him to death. It was actually very emotional that he did it there and it surprised me: that he would come all the way over to Paris on short notice like that and propose.
Tennis Week: Can you take me through the actual proposal? Did he get down on one knee and do it the old fashioned way?
Bethanie Mattek: He's not a big romantic kind of guy so I was impressed he came all the way over. What actually happened was there were two proposals. He got to Paris and went to Tiffany and Co. at the airport and bought two rings — the one he gave me and the matching one he wore — and when he got there he opened the box and said 'Do you like it?' And I was like 'Am I assuming this is it (the proposal)?' And it was understood that it was. So that was the first proposal and I was wearing that ring on my left finger and he was wearing the matching one. Then when Wimbledon came, that's when he gave me the rock. He's such a sweet guy. I was driving from Eastbourne to London and I met him there. Basically we hadn't seen each other in a while and we rented a house in Wimbledon Village. We're carrying our stuff in and when we got upstairs he kind of taps me on my shoulder and hands me a box and says 'I got something for you.' That was the official rock. So that was really cool and very special it happened right there at Wimbledon.
Tennis Week: Bethanie, I don't know your husband, but it sounds like he's the kind of guy who gets up for the majors: proposes at the French Open then again at Wimbledon. He sounds like a major player.
Bethanie Mattek: (laughs). Exactly. Exactly.
Tennis Week: How has your relationship with Justin changed or influenced you? People tend to perceive you as this free spirit; have you noticed any change?
Bethanie Mattek: Honestly, it's been awesome. I feel so much more grounded with him and as an athlete himself he understands me. He trained for college football and he trained for the NFL and was kind of on the cusp of it so he understands the dedication it requires. I think he gets just as excited watching me as if he's playing himself. We work out together and he really helps push me and encourages me through those last sets. It's really been awesome and just an amazing time in my life.
Tennis Week: Tennis players are like gypsies — always on the road traveling — has marriage brought any sense of stability to your life?
Bethanie Mattek: Oh yeah, this is the first time in a while that I've had a home and closet. I have a dog. I know it's unbelievable or it sounds unbelievable. None of my friends believe me when I tell them about how grounded I feel. And in other ways it hasn't changed much because before we got engaged we were really open and honest with each other. So it's not like I change the kind of clothes I wear or anything like that because I'm married. He's just honest about himself and about me and I am too. Honestly, I knew it from the first day I met him that we'd be together. As corny as it sounds, I knew it from the first day we met.
Tennis Week: Where are you living and where will your training base be?

Bethanie Mattek: I'm officially living in Phoenix and that's where I'm gonna train out of too. Right now, I don't have a coach and so whenever I find someone hopefully I can continue to train here. That was the initial reason I came here. There aren't a ton of players out here so I will work that (training) out, but I've got a pretty good set up here, which is great.
Tennis Week: You didn't make the trip to Australia. You had a strong finish to 2008 and I know you had some injury issues, how is your health? When do you plan to return to the Tour?
Bethanie Mattek: I actually feel great. It's really been nice taking the time off from tennis, taking a mental break, getting married and just relaxing. It's been so good for me in terms of giving me perspective. So I'm excited to go back on the Tour and to get in even better shape. I had a bit of a hip injury at the end of last year and I did some rehab and got in better shape and took three months off so I'm feeling great. If I get selected for Fed Cup, I would really like to play Fed Cup for the United States in February.
Tennis Week: Fed Cup is being played in Surprise, Arizona so that's right near you in Phoenix, right?
Bethanie Mattek: Yeah, it's literally 25 minutes away from my house. So I'm really excited if I get picked to play. They officially announce the team on January 26th and I really want to play. If I get picked, I'll have a ton of people watching who have not gotten the chance to see me play live so that's really something I hope happens and something I'm very much looking forward to. I've been watching a lot of tennis on television. I'm watching the Australian Open on TV every day and I feel I've picked up some things and tendencies just watching.
Tennis Week: You've always been an interesting player for me because you're a good volleyer with soft hands, you like to get up to net and at this time in women's tennis, when the game is primarily played from the baseline, that makes you kind of unique. You play a lot of doubles, you work on your transition and net game and watching you last year, especially in the summer, you looked more relaxed to me on court. What have you learned about yourself and your game tactically that you can apply when you come back?
Bethanie Mattek: Definitely another reason I did well last year was my strategy. It's sad to say, but in years past I really didn't have any strategy. I just literally went out there and hit the ball, I don't know, without really any strategy sometimes. Looking back, it was unbelievable I got to the top 100 in the world just doing that: just going out hitting the ball. Last year I had strategy. I could start to tell the signs on where the other players are going with their shots, I started to read the game better. And now, watching a lot more tennis on TV and watching the Australian Open I am starting to see patterns and pick up patterns in how players play. That's what really slowed the game down a bit for me and made me read the game better last year and like you said I like to get up to net and want to continue that. So if I looked more relaxed to you last year maybe it was because I felt I knew what was going on better and I had a plan.
Tennis Week: You've attained your highest singles ranking and you've been a successful doubles player. Will you continue to play doubles full time when you come back? If so, who will you play with?
Bethanie Mattek: My doubles ranking (No. 28) is still higher than my singles ranking (No. 38). I'm losing some points at the Australian Open and yes, I'm going to play doubles. I'm looking for a doubles partner to try to play with regularly, which is tough based on the different schedules. I love playing doubles. For me, doubles is fun and there's a totally different strategy in doubles. So yes, I'm excited to play doubles and while I don't have anyone yet (as a partner) there are a couple of people in the works.
Tennis Week: You've played doubles with Jelena Jankovic and you know her well. Is she ready to break through and win her first major singles title at the Australian Open?
Bethanie Mattek: I think so. I've been watching, she's playing great. She's looking a lot stronger, she gained a lot of muscle mass and I think it's been a goal for her. She got the No. 1 ranking without a Slam title and I know how badly she wants to win one. I think she's ready.
Tennis Week: What is your schedule for your return?
Bethanie Mattek: I actually have signed up for Paris Indoors and that's the one and then if I play Fed Cup I would see how that goes. Depending on that, hopefully I'd go to Dubai and then Indian Wells and Miami — that whole U.S. swing — then off to Europe and I'll do a pretty full European swing before going to the grass.
Tennis Week: In what ways has married life changed your life?
Bethanie Mattek: It's funny between me and Justin it's been the same. We still have fun and still laugh and still do the things we've done. I think what it's done is shown me that there is life outside of tennis. Not that I lost any focus or anything like that, but it's like now that I have that full life outside tennis I feel I can put more into tennis and that makes it almost more fun and gives me a more well-round life. I feel I can get away from tennis and go do other things and then when I come back to tennis I can give 100 percent to it. So it's a great feeling for me. It can be tough as a player because you're always on the road and you have to put so much focus into tennis and I believe I play better when I can turn that off, live the life outside, and come back feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Tennis Week: Okay, I have to ask you about the black wedding dress. I thought that was a cool move and in keeping with the Bethanie Mattek philosophy of wearing non-traditional clothes on court you did it for your wedding. How did that happen?
Bethanie Mattek: It's a funny story. All I knew was I didn't want to wear white. I walked into a bridal store and was looking around and though they had a lot of really nice stuff, it looked all white to me so I walked out and the owner came out after me and said 'Why didn't you try anything on?' I said 'I don't want to wear anything white or ivory or pink.' I was initially going to wear something vibrant or colorful and have a very relaxed wedding with the guys wearing linen pants and have a beach theme. The owner told me 'I've got this evening gown you might like it.' So I tried it on — it was the first dress I tried on — and it was black and fit perfectly and I liked it. So the wedding got a little more formal and the guys had to wear nice pants, but it was really relaxed and fantastic. It's funny because now Justin will often pick out the clothes I wear on court and sometimes he'll say 'You should wear this....'
Tennis Week: I was thinking about you today after Venus lost because with Lindsay retired after the Williams sisters you're the next highest-ranked American. And you would have been close to being seeded in Australia if you had played. As the third-highest ranked American woman do you feel that responsibility to try to represent American tennis and give it a bit of a boost it needs?
Bethanie Mattek: Absolutely. And that's another reason why I want to play Fed Cup and really help the team and the country. We hope we can get the USA back up there on the map and I'm excited about that.
Tennis Week: Bethanie, you sound genuinely very happy and that's great to hear. Really appreciate your time and wish you all the best with your marriage and your return.
Bethanie Mattek: Thanks very much. I really am very happy. I feel great and I'm just really excited about my life.
