With the top draft pick for the second consecutive season, the Kansas City Explorers selected Anna Kournikova. While still looking for her first WTA Tour singles title, Kournikova is one of the game’s top doubles players, winning 16 doubles titles including two Grand Slam championships. Kournikova was previously drafted by WTT but was unable to play due to a foot injury. In a post draft trade, theExplorers sent Jeff Tarango to the Hartford FoxForce in exchange for David Wheaton. Joining Kournikova and Wheaton on the Explorers roster will be doubles specialist Rick Leach along with Iroda Tulyaganova and Rachel McQuillan. The Explorers will once again be coached by Paul Smith.

The St. Louis Aces protected the rights to American sensation Andy Roddick. Currently ranked #6 in the world, Roddick returns for his fourth WTT season. Most recently Roddick reached the semifinals in the Australian Open. Rounding out the Aces lineup will be Tatiana Panova, Amir Hadad, Nicole Arendt and John-Laffnie de Jager. Greg Patton is the St. Louis coach.

Martina Navratilova returns for her seventh WTT season as the #3 overall draft pick.With 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 doubles titles and eight mixed doubles championships, Navratilova’s credentials are among the best in the history of the game. She recently teamed with Leander Paes to capture the Australian Open mixed doubles title at age 46. The Freedoms also selected Vera Zvonareva, Nathan Healey, Elena Tatarkova and Andrew Florent to join their team.

The League’s newest franchise selected hometown favorite Lindsay Davenport. This selection comes via trade from the New York Buzz in exchange for the Breakers first round Marquee Draft pick. A former WTT MVP, Davenport is currently ranked #5 in the world after a finals appearance at Indian Wells along with the doubles title at that event with partner Lisa Raymond. In a trade with the Sacramento Capitals, the Breakers added WTT veteran Brian MacPhie to their roster. Rounding out the lineup will be Russian teenage star Maria Sharapova, Josh Eagle and Shenay Perry.

With the fifth pick in the draft, the Hartford FoxForce protected the rights to rising star James Blake who will be playing in his third WTT season. Blake is currently ranked #14 in the world. 2002 was a breakthrough year for Blake when he captured his first ATP singles title and helped the US Davis Cup Team reach the semifinals. The FoxForce also protected the rights to Meghann Shaughnessy who returns for a second year. Currently ranked #19 in the world, Shaughnessy is coming off her biggest win this year, defeating Venus Williams to advance to the quarterfinals of the recent Nasdaq-100. The
FoxForce traded David Wheaton to the Kansas City Explorers in exchange for Jeff Tarango. Joining Tarango will be Milagros Sequera, Martina Muller and Murphy Jensen.

Returning to the Springfield Lasers will be the WTA’s eleventh ranked singles standout Anastasia Myskina who collected her third singles title of her career this season in Doha. The 2001 WTT Rookie of the Year returns to the Lasers for the third consecutive year. Joining Myskina on the Lasers roster will be Nana Miyagi, Andrew Kratzman, Glenn Weiner and Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios. Trevor Kronemann returns as the Lasers’ coach.

After passing on a selection in the first round, the Delaware Smash will have most of their team returning from a year ago. The Smash added Liezel Huber with their first round pick in the Roster Draft. Joining Huber will be returning players Scott Humphries, Paul Goldstein and Samantha Reeves. Brad Dancer will coach the Delaware squad.

The newly named New York Sportimes have protected their rights to legendary star and New York native John McEnroe. Playing in his fourth consecutive WTT season, McEnroe brings to the Sportimes his seven Grand Slam singles titles and ten doubles titles. Along with McEnroe, brother Patrick will lead the Sportimes through the 2003 season. Joining the McEnroe brothers will be Julia Vakulenko, Ellis Ferreira and Bea Bielik.

One of tennis’ greatest players will be making his WTT debut this summer for the New York Buzz. Returning to competitive tennis for the first time since 1997, Boris Becker will lead the charge for the Buzz who advanced to the WTT Finals in 2002. Becker ranks in the top five in all- time in career singles titles and prize money. Joining Becker will be Don Johnson, Justin Bower, Nannie de Villiers and Eva Dyrberg. The team will be coached by Jolene Watanabe.

The defending champion Sacramento Capitals protected the rights to the #2 player in the world, Andre Agassi, with their first round draft pick. Agassi returns for his second consecutive WTT season coming off wins at the 2003 Australian Open and the Nasdaq-100. Trying to win back-to-back titles, the Capitals will have the #1 ranked doubles team, Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor. Also returning to the team for her fifth WTT season will be Elena Likhovtseva, who will be joined by WTT newcomer Ally Baker. Wayne Bryan also returns as coach of the Capitals.
The 2003 WTT Pro League season will run from July 7 - 27
