Davenport to play in Family Circle Cup
Associated Press

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Lindsay Davenport will make her first appearance at the Family Circle Cup since 1998 when the tournament begins next week.

Tournament officials said Davenport joins Serena Williams, Monica Seles, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Jennifer Capriati in the $1.3 million clay-court event, which takes place from April 7-13.

"Lindsay adds so much to our already impressive player field and she has played such an important role in the success of women's tennis," said Frankie Whelan, Family Circle Cup executive director.

Davenport has won three Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal in her career. But she spent most of last season recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.

This year, Davenport won her first singles title since the operation when she beat Seles to take the Pan Pacific Open.

That means Monica will have to play a first round--not such a bad thing...Just means more points and more match practice...

Good :D - I'm glad that Lindsay finally decided to play a clay event. Maybe she'll play the French and win a round for the first time since 1999  :p

Good luck Lindsay :D - good scheduling move by the way ;)

Iva beet her in 4th round in 97. Lindsay returned the favour in QF '98.

semi's in 98, quarters in 99

the fact that she hasnt won a match at RG since 1999 still stands though, the last match she won on clay was (i think) in rome 2000

time to change those stats ;) :bounce:

That's true. Elena Dementieva in Roma 2002. She beat her 6-2 6-3, and then hurt her back warming up with Guilia Casoni (remember her?) and had to pull out. Three years later, it would be nice to see her win another clay match. :)

I really hope Monica meets either Davenport or Serena on clay. She never has and I think she will have the edge.

Good to see such a well rounded draw. also very good for Serena. Maybe she will get to have/face some top players in this tournie. i think it will do her well, especially for the tournies after this 1 :) All of Serena's contenders on the clay is say are in this tournie except for Venus and Kim :)

I really did mean that she hasn't won a match at the French Open since 1999 ;) - I didn't forget about her QF and SF though

That was really impressive :D - I totally forgot that lol.

And then going out to Dominique at Roland Garros

Still, in 1999, she got to the 3R of Amelia Island before losing and then she won Madrid and then she got to the QF of the French, beating 2001 Semifinalist Justine Henin and 2001 champion Jennifer Capriati before falling to eventual champion Graf. And then 2000 was just ugly (although it can't be that bad if your record is 1-2). And because of that, she decided to skip the entire clay season in 2001!

I really hope that is good for her - she can accomplish a lot here :D

I really hope Lindsay is ready. Not having played a clay match since 2000, it may be hard for her to adjust
