View Full Version : FedCup Team announced

Bovina
Dementieva
Myskina
Panova

It should be enough to defeat Croatia.. I hope ;) But you never know with Russian girls :)

It seems like coaches went easy way and invited higher ranked players, which makes sense not to create any problems between the players.

Just like I said in another thread: if you want to play for Russia, get you ranking high enough.

No surprises there.

Do you know what surface it's on?

tenn_ace
Mar 28th, 2003, 05:05 PM
no, but I'd be surprised if anything different from clay... this would be the only chance (very small) for Croatia to beat Russia

TheBoiledEgg
Mar 28th, 2003, 05:26 PM
its in Moscow and its Taraflex Carpet
Universal Sports Hall 'Druzhba', Moscow, RUS
Stadium Capacity: 3,500

good choice of stadium as it will generate a good atmosphere in a small compact stadium :)

originally it was to take place in Croatia, dont know when it was changed.

good team, glad they put Tatiana in :)

Elena D and Nastya own Iva

Leena
Mar 28th, 2003, 06:37 PM
Everyone owns Iva. :p

Who would be 2nd singles for Croatia? Sprem's playing the best... She scares me because she's tearing up Challengers like Lena did in 2000.

Eggy, I can test you on something... :) Is Taraflex a fast surface? I'd hope Russia makes it slower, and higher bouncing... I know Lena would play better under those conditions.

And why do you think Alyona will play 2nd singles instead of Lena?

TheBoiledEgg
Mar 28th, 2003, 06:54 PM
i didnt say she would play instead, i said she owned Iva, big diff

is Taraflex a fast surface ??
that all depends on what its laid on and how old/new the surface is.
Wood makes the surface faster
a Softer undersurface makes it slower.

Older Carpet is faster than newer as the surface is worn out reducing friction.

Leena
Mar 28th, 2003, 06:58 PM
Sorry, I overreact when Lena isn't mentioned. :p

I have no clue what Taraflex is... :p

I thought it was type of surface... like Croatia chose that uber-fast, non-bouncing court, like they did in Davis Cup against USA.

TheBoiledEgg
Mar 28th, 2003, 07:07 PM
Taraflex is Carpet
its just a manufacturer's name

like Decoturf/Plexipave are on outdoor Hard.

Eggy, Elena D. doesn't own anyone anymore. Bovina should play the second singles. She has bigger weapons and much more confidence than Dementieva does.

And what is the doubles team going to be? Demetieva and Panova? Please! There are no good Russian doubles teams to be used in the Fed Cup or Olympics. The girls obviously don't like to team up with each other. Why is that?

Leena
Mar 29th, 2003, 01:29 AM
I'll try being non-biased here... :p

I'd seriously take Elena D over Lena...

Both their results have been nearly the same for the past few months... but:

1) Alyona has shown she's best on fast surfaces like grass, indoors.

2) Alyona is a more consistent player... and that's what's needed against players like Iva, Karolina, Jelena, Silvia... none of which are near the level of our Russian girls currently (Karolina might be, but she has to prove it against the big girls). As we know with Lena, it almost doesn't matter who she's playing... it's all up to her if she'll win or not.

3) Alyona has played many Fed Cup matches... Lena's played 2 singles matches... and the one vs. Na Li (Backwards Chinese wanna-be Russian) doesn't count.

It'll probably be very similar to what they used for DC against Argentina and it was pretty fast

Leena, I prefer Elena D. to Elena B. But Elena B. clearly deserves to play ahead of Elena D. on the Russian Fed Cup team. She has a much better serve and a much better backhand. And Elena B. doesn't have a history of crumbling to defeat and double faulting away wins the way Elena D. does. I would be surprised if Tarpischev plays Dememtieva ahead of Bovina in the upcoming Fed Cup tie. Bovina has the biggest upside of all the female Russian tennis players. It's time she got the backing she deserves.

And is Elena D. in trouble where making the Russian Olympic tennis team next year is concerned? How many players can Russia send to Athens?

King Aaron

I do think Elena B should play. But either one of them could beat Iva I think.

They should have picked Nadia. At least she can team up with Elena D.

Lol at the Na Li comment! ;)

I wouldn't expect much at all from the Russian Fed Cup team this year. Their singles players are unimpressive and there aren't any good Russia doubles teams. They will struggle just to defeat Croatia.

First, follow the link:

http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?threadid=24020

second, since we qualified first time for world group in 1999, we make finals every odd year. This yera we'll make finals again. And we'll hopefully win it for a change..

Also, you just realise what is our depth and how fast are we growing..

Remember, just five years we had to play Australia in Perth, on grass.. And, Kournikova is injured, Likhovtseva is no't going, Makarova doesn't play. And Russian #5 back then, Koulikovskaya, has already committed to something else.. So we have only Panova from professional players. And then Bogorodetski takes with him some girls from Spartak club ( it was Rodionova, probably Sysoeva and someone else - all ranked below 300 ) goes to Australia and we win it..

Now we have to play a team that is lead by a Grand Slam champion. And even our third team would easily be a favourite to win it.. And it's just five years.. What is it going to be like in 2008?

I'm a little surprised that Tatiana (Panova) is on the team. I'm her biggest fan, but I think that if she plays a singles rubber (highly unlikely, I know) then the person who lets her is insane. She has lost 7 of her last 9 matches.

It would be nice to see her in dubs, though, as she is always there for Russia.

According to Neiland, Bovina has a fever, and Panova hasn't joined the team yet (!!! ??? ) by Thursday afternoon. And Neiland mentioned Likhovtseva, something that I didn't understand. Things might not be as simple as we thought they were.

tenn_ace

even without Bovina, Nastia and Elena D. should be enough to win 3 marches... that's all Russia needs

ys
Apr 25th, 2003, 06:12 AM
On paper, yes.. But now it all depends on whether Alyona beats Iva in the first day. And Alyona is just back from US, after playing on different surface. So, if she loses, and we go with 1:1 into the second day, we are still favourites, but quite shaky favourites. Because should we somehow lose another point in singles - doubles could become a clincher, and we don't have a doubles team. And Myskina and Dementieva are together 0:4 in doubles in Fed Cup. And Panova is not a doubles player too. And Bovina might not be fit at all. I think, Neiland didn't mention Likhovtseva for nothing. I think Likhovtseva will end up on the bench - we don't need four singles players with no doubles specialist for this tie.

I don't know why Tatiana Panova was selected either, you don't need 4 singles players, 3 plus a doubles specialist is good enough.

Iva is certainly no indoor (or any other fast surface) queen and she did play in the States too. I don't know much about Sprem except that she enjoyed a long winning streak... in challengers. Both Elena and Nastia ARE better than the best in challengers.

IMO, 1-1 after day 1 will be an embarassing score

I have a feeling that something went wrong with Tanya's selection. Maybe some bad blood from previous non-selections surfaced? Maybe Tanya didn't want to come to be a substitution player only. But her not showing up for a week of training after being selected is so uncharacteristic and doesn't look well (she didn't have a problem to come for China play-off) . I think, the chances are, it was the last time we've heard Tanya's name in a context of national team. Unless she had some valid problem not to come in time..

the cat
Apr 27th, 2003, 04:17 AM
So Leena, Lena would kill everyone in a legs competition? Even Daniela Hantuchova?

And to play a Fed Cup Tie on carpet in the clay court season is questionable judgement to say the least.

Leena
Apr 27th, 2003, 04:32 AM
Yes... Lena would. I'd say her legs are just as long, and probably longer than Dani's... she's 6'3. Lena's legs aren't sticks either, like Dani.

I don't know if they could have played on clay in Moscow... I think it's still rather chilly in Russia... and maybe they couldn't get indoor clay.

ys
Apr 27th, 2003, 05:17 AM
Indoor clay installation costs in excess of $100K. They do it for Davis Cup, because Davis Cup gets exceptional crowds and so they put it into Olympic stadium ( 35,000 capacity, for Kremlin Cup they sell around 17,000 tix, but that's because more than half of the stadium goes to sidecourts ) and it gets good return in terms of money. Fed Cup is being played in Druzhba, which is of relatively small capacity ( less than 2,000, I tihnk ) and it's only two days. besides, by choosing clay Russia would have given Croats some minimal chance ( even if Iva is a whipping girl for Russian players on any surface, still she has two biggest clay titles on her resume )

I sincerely hope that Nastya beats Iva easily tomorrow. I don't want Alyona to play a competititve match tomorrow. Dead rubber is OK - no pressure - no one gets injured in exhibitions.

It was a good idea to play Elena and Nastya in doubles. And I'll explain why.. Both of them will be team's regulars for years, so they will have to play doubles, even with other partners. Up to the moment none of them had a doubles win in Fed Cup, so it was a good idea to let them play and win to break that duck.

We play Slovenia away. So it is going to be clay, and a team of Srebotnik/Pisnik on clay is not going to be a cakewalk. Tarpishev however is already talking about the idea of hosting the superfinals in Moscow. If we make it to the finals, I will be very glad if it is in Moscow or in US. I hope it is not in Belgium or France. If it is in Moscow or in US, I would probably go..:)

In 1999 and 2000 it was in US ( Stanford and somwhere in Nevada ). In 2001 and 2002 it was Spain ( Madrid and Canary Islands ). I don't remember it being in Belgium in any recent year. But Russia did host a group competition in year 2000.

On Friday I met Alyona in the little cafe near the players` lounge and arranged a quiet talk for the next day. Unfortunately it wasn`t too long - about 15 minutes - but anyway she told a good deal of interesting things. She was so happy with her first WTA title. :) When I asked her if she would be that happy if she had won say a Tier V tournament, she told that she wouldn`t. "Not only the titles matter, but also the manner by which you win it". Other girls I did not contact. Elena Bovina was never around and I just missed Nastya. :(

But the main thing of the whole tie was the mere fact that two members of the Russian Roulette have met outside the web (for the 1st time I guess :)). Me and Nina took few pics in front of the Davis Cup. Hi, Nina :wavey:

She was seen there on Friday morning, though not by me. She even took some training, but looked very ill and left.

We might end up having a almost completely new crew for the semis. Panova is out. Bovina is sick. Dementieva is injured. And Nastya's form is not encouraging at all..

So, it looks like we might play a team of
Myskina, Zvonareva, Likhovtseva and .. Safina? Kuznetsova? Or Dementieva? Or someone else?

Semis are still 2 1/2 months away
long time :)

I'm sure whoever we have will be good enough

and on clay Vera will be picked

And now we haev a "problem", don't ya think?

Because, we play Slovenia on red clay, meaning that Nadya and Vera are in, no matter what, any other selection would be plain silly. Then one of Nastya, Alyona and Lena will have to be left out.

Nastya and Vera have WTT commitments. I am not sure that Russian Tennis Federation will agree to buy out both of them. I think, based on latest results, Elena B. should be left in reserve.. But she is all-rounder. Will Shamil select by rankings again leaving Nadya out?

Also, if we win, and get a chance to host the finals, which surface would it be?

finals would be indoors no question about it

all of our girls or 90% of them prefer Indoors.

Slovenia tie:
Nadya should be in team for sure.
Alyona will be in for sure.

leaves two others. Nadya can play doubes as well. Lena B should be #3
so that leaves either Nastya or Vera to be bought out of WTT.

my selection:
Nastya or Vera
Alyona
Lena B
Nadya

Sure, indoors, but what indoors? Clay? Hard? Carpet?

Now imagine US team of Williamsx2 and Davenport coming. Do you expect us to choose carpet? They'll kill anyone on carpet.

To neutralise Americans we'd need clay. To neutralise Belgians we need
Decoturf.
On carpet either team will be better than us by miles.

Nadya should be in team for sure.

If Vera beats her in quarters, what would be reasons for that?

Alyona will be in for sure.

No argument here.
