I just called as well and a woman named Jackie in their admin office just really rained on my parade..... She's pulled out with the foot injury.

I hope that heals soon..... I cant stand watching her go down in the rankings and its just going to make her first round matches that much harder. Take care of yourself Monica!!!!!!!!!!

:( Monica!
Get well soon!

I just checked the draw (http://www.nasdaq-100open.com/draws/wsdraw.pdf). Evie Dominikovic has been written in as the replacement for Monica Seles.

Strangely, I don't feel anything but a calm acceptance. After all the injuries and miserable draws of the past two years, I have no more frustration left to feel. I simply have to believe that things will break right for Monica soon. It just wasn't to be in Miami.

I hope Monica takes great care of herself. She's still one of the best tennis players on the planet. I just hope she gets a break soon. Or some new feet. :p

:worship: Monica :worship:

Charleston is too soon. Maybe Monica should just forget the ranking, the money, the sense of obligation, and everything, and just aim for Rome. Come back at Rome REALLY healthy and fit, and ready to make a eun through Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon. Maybe Eastbourne too.

Mar 21st, 2003, 06:21 PM
Poor Monica. I wouldn't worry about her rankings at this point. No matter how long Monica is out; she always finds her way back up. That's what makes her such a great champion.

Mar 21st, 2003, 08:40 PM
This was always a possibility. Better to heal up for clay season than risk aggravating the injury playing a tournament you won't win anyway, because you ARE injured.

Mar 21st, 2003, 08:43 PM
get well soon monica

I had a really bad day today, and the only thing I was looking forward today was seeing Monica play ( I haven't seen her play since US open last year).

Why do all the good people get injured?

Get some rest and come back strong Monica!

Mar 21st, 2003, 09:20 PM
I think it's great she isn't playing! Great for her feet. They aren't 100% to begin with and rather than subject them to pounding on hard courts, she can just allow them further rest and then return on clay which is a soft surface and easier on the feet.

Mar 21st, 2003, 09:26 PM
 Get well soon Monica!

oh no.. I wasn't expecting this.

Rest Up MONICA and take your next tournament by storm!!

MIAMI, FL – No. 10 seed Monica Seles has been forced to withdraw from this week’s US$2,960,000 million NASDAQ-100 Open due to a left foot injury.

Seles, ranked No. 12 in the world, has been bothered by a left foot stress reaction that she sustained almost a month ago while practicing at her home in Sarasota, FL. This injury forced her to withdraw from the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells before the start of the tournament.

Seles was due to make her tenth appearance at the NASDAQ-100 Open. She is a two-time champion at this event, winning the title in 1999 and 1991, and was runner-up in 1997. Last year, she defeated Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals before falling to Jennifer Capriati in the semifinals, 46 63 76(4). Her next scheduled event is the Family Circle Cup, April 7 – 13, in Charleston, SC.

“I’m really disappointed I won’t be able to play at the NASDAQ-100 Open. I tried my hardest but unfortunately my foot is not 100% and hopefully I will recover soon,” Seles said. “I love to play at this tournament and I am sad to see that I had to pull out today but it is the best I can do for my health.”

"We're obviously disappointed that we won't get to see Monica play this year. She's a true champion and a South Florida fan favorite,” tournament chairman Butch Buchholz said. “We hope that she'll recover to have a successful season and I look forward to seeing her at the 2004 NASDAQ-100 Open."

Evie Dominikovic from Australia now moves into the main draw.

i am happy! i just went to yahoo and it said that seles lost to bartoli 6-1 in the third! i was thinking that monica career was over, but obviously that was dominikovic/bartoli.

I'm starting to believe that if Monica gets another injury this year, she should just retire. I hate to say this(in fact, it's my first time thinking she should!), but I'm sick of getting my hopes crushed...I'd be much more satisified with her career overall if she wasn't playing than see her ranking and results dip as they have...
