I think that Chanda's game does not match up well against Kim's consistency and depth. Chanda also struggled against Martina Hingis although she did get a win or two against Hingis she mostly struggled. Kim is not threatened by Chanda's serve and Kim likes passing a short player at the net but Chanda has the GAME and should be able to challenge Kim. So I don't really quite get it. ???

What is going on with Chanda lately?? She is really struggling.

Kim has been really struggling lately, yet Chanda only wins 5 games. I find it hard to believe that Kim just outhit her. I believe that Chanda was just error-proned. I saw her match with Sugiyama and every single point was either a Chanda error, or a Chanda winner.

First of all, great win, Kim!! I believe she will now lead the Championships race.

Anyway, possible reasons Chanda doesn't match up well against Kim:
--Kim is very scrappy and gets many balls back (whereas, say, Lindsay wouldn't get as many balls back)
--Kim plays with more topspin than, say, the Williams sisters, and the height and weight of the ball may affect her more than a flat ball

Elke

First of all, congrats to Kim on her win. (She certainly is a damn good player.) I fully expect her to win the tournament now, barring injury/illness/letdown.

This was another match that was much closer than the final game score indicated. It literally was a matter of a point or two per set.

I think this is completely mental on Chanda's part. She's missing on the big points. I've seen it happen numerous times with players; Seles vs Hingis, Davenport recently vs Serena, Garrison vs Navratilova, Zvereva vs Graf. Players who, in general, lost a lot of matches to an opponent before they finally broke through, even though they had more than enough talent to win.

Chanda has more than enough game to beat anyone when she plays well. Not "at the absolute top of her game and only if her opponent is off". If Chanda plays well, she can beat anyone on any surface. She beat Serena at Manhattan Beach while playing at no better than 80%. The one part in her game that hasn't come back close to full strength yet, and the one area where Kim is having a noticeable advantage in these matches, is the serve. Chanda used to pop her second serves at 100 MPH. She's concentrating more on variety and placement these days, but she's still got a few MPH that she can get back.

Those knowledgable about the game know that the margins in women's tennis are extremely fine. A 5% difference in performance level determines which side of a 6-2 or 6-1 score you're on. That's true even when 2 elite players square off. We saw that in Australia. In the final set, Kim was playing better and Serena was a bit off, so Kim had a big 5-1 lead. Then Kim got tight and Serena got loose, and the set completely turned around. Just a slight shift completely turned things.

Those who disparage Chanda's abilities don't know much about how the game is played. She has all the tools. She owns all the shots. She doesn't need to learn anything new to be a top 5 player and a slam contender. She's got enough right now. She's only lost 1 match to a lower-ranked player in 4 months, and that on that goofy rainy day in Scottsdale when the tournament lost all of its top seeds except Kim. Chanda never gets "blown out", as a rule. Of her 3 losses to Kim in the past 4 months, only one was truly as one-sided as the score. So that means she's beating the players ranked below her (usually in routine fashion), and only losing to higher-ranked players (almost always in a tight match). Her points-per-tournament average is much higher than those of players like Dokic and Hantuchova, even though they've had the benefits of higher seedings.

Chanda fully deserves to be in the top 10, and higher. She is a top player. And she's still improving her play in her comeback. She hasn't gotten her game completely back on track yet (especially the serve). She's good enough now to beat multiple top players in a row and win a big tourney. And she can get much better.

I'm not surprised to see people disrespecting her. I've seen it throughout her career. The common thread is that those who disparage her abilities invariably know next to nothing about the technical and tactical aspect of the sport. (Hence their conspicuous absence from threads discussing those things.) It's still annoying, but these comments don't mean much, given the source.

Why does the name Wertheim pop into my head? I'm guessing you have THAT quote memorized.

Brian Stewart - perhaps its because for most of her career Chanda has had a block against top players; it's all good to say she has the talent to beat any top player at any time, but when she rarely does it, the potential doesn't really matter. What she actually does on the court is what matters. Chanda is a great fighter, and a great talent, too, but she has never really broken through to the big time of women's tennis.

as brian said, the actual scoreline is very decieving, Y'all would have had to seen the match before you go and slag chanda off. When Chanda was serving at 2-3 first set,she was up 30-0 and then she got 2 really unfair linecalls( one which should have been an ace).It was after that then that she just got really dispirited. also Kim was playing pretty much flawless tennis, she wasn't giving away any free points. and whoever said the comment about how chanda can push players like Venus and Serena, that is coz they give away so many cheap points too aswell as hitting loads of winners. It was just unfortunate that Kim yesterday was playing at 101%.
