View Full Version : The reputation feature - LAST UPDATE: AUGUST 2003

About reputation:

I've noticed a lot of people don't know about the new feature "reputation" yet. So let me share what I know (and still don't know) about it. :) Please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere, or fill us in on the things I've missed...

* * * * * * *

- breaking news: there is a 2 byte storage limit :breaking news -

Latest news (discovered july 2003):

there is a 2 byte storage limit, meaning that the minimum and maximum reputation a member can have lies between

-32767 and +32767

* * * * * * *

About the bubbles and their colors:

next to your posts you see a little bubble. It can be black, green, gray or red - and there can be more than one. If you put your arrow over it a little info-label will come up, telling you something about your reputation. The better your reputation, the more flattering the info.
.
http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_off.gif BLACK means your reputation is "off": others won't be able to see how you are doing reputation-wise. You can put it on or off in your user cp: click on user cp, click on options - it's the second option in the list.
.

http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif GREEN means you have a good reputation. I think this means you have AT LEAST 1 point. First you'll get an extra one for every 100 points you reach; later on you'll need more than 100 points for each extra bubbles...
.

http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif GRAY means you don't have a particular reputation. I THINK it means you have less than 1 point (and more than what? minus 10? I don't know.)
.

http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif RED means you have a really bad reputation....

About points: looking them up, giving, and taking away...:

at the right from the "On/offline"-button you can see a little gray button which is supposed to represent a balance http://www.wtaworld.com/images/buttons/blue/reputation.gif (in the red skin it's still the old http://www.wtaworld.com/images/buttons/red/reputation.gif mark right now - maybe it will change later). If you click on it under one of your own posts, a little window will pop up to tell you how many points you have. You'll also be able to see if that particular post has been approved or disapproved of, since every approval and disapproval (with their comments) will appear in the popup window.
Another way to check your points in in your user control panel (http://www.wtaworld.com/usercp.php?). You'll see he amount of points you have + the last five fifteen persons who rated you. (changed end June 2003 - thanks Danny)
.

A rating is positive if it's been represented by a green bubble http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif .
.

It is neutral when the bubble is gray http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif (the person rating you has not enough posts or reputation to give or take points).
.

It is negative when the bubble is red http://www.wtaworld.com/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif .
.

if you click on the "balance" http://www.wtaworld.com/images/buttons/blue/reputation.gif (or the "v/x"-mark http://www.wtaworld.com/images/buttons/red/reputation.gif) under a post of someone else, again a little window will pop up - but now you'll be able to choose between "I approve of this post" or "I disapprove". You cannot choose the amount of points you give or take away. That depends on several other things:
.

on the amount of POSTS you have. If you have a lot of posts, you'll give (or take!) a lot of points... if you have at least some reputation.
.

on the amount of REPUTATION POINTS you have. If you don't have any reputation at all (ie: your bubble is gray or red) you won't be able to give points. If you have a lot of points, you'll give (or take!) a lot of points... if you have at least some posts.
.

on seniority: the longer you're a member, the more points you'll be worth.
.
There is still a lot of guessing in this, since it is not always clear why some people give so much more than others...
This is what webmaster WTA_amanda has said about it:
"Your reputation is also built up by how long you've been a member, the amount of posts you make, and a few other hidden factors like kissing up to adminstrators and moderators for example." An admin is able to rate without "spreading"- or "24 hours"-limitations... but he'll be giving only 10 50 points each time (see also "About restrictions") correction (July 2003): this has been changed from 10 to 50 points.
.
the amount of points you can take away (by disapproving of a post) is only about half of what you would give (by approving)

.

About comments: giving them, looking them up...:

when somebody rates you, you will be able to see which post s/he rated (or rather: to which thread the rated post belongs), when (date and time) s/he rated it, and who it was. You'll also see their comment - if they made one. You can see this info in your user cp. There is one restriction: you'll only see the last five fifteen... so if you receive a lot of reps while you're not aware of it (or while you're not around...) you may have missed a lot of your approvers/disapprovers... (Since this changed end June 2003 from five to fifteen, it's less probable you'll miss a lot of comments :p :) - thanks Danny!)
when rating somebody you can leave them a little comment. (You don't have to leave your name: it will automatically be attached.)
you can click on the rated thread, that will take you to the post that was rated....

About restrictions:

As far as I know, there are three restrictions in rating:

you cannot rate the same post more than once
.

you cannot rate the same person again unless you have "spread some reputation around" first - meaning, you have to rate others first (last report said 20, and 20 it is - thanks Toon)
.

you can rate only 11 posters in 24 hours (again: thank you Toon); after that you'll have to wait till you're able to rate again... An admin can rate without the "spreading" and "24 hours"-limitations... but he'll never give much (only 10 50 points...) correction (July 2003): this has been changed from 10 to 50 points
.

Can't rep you for the moment, btw - we swapped points last night, remember? :)

"You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later."
how many reputations can I give during a day?I don't know. Not too many, it seems.

Sometimes, after waiting a bit, you're finally able to rep again... but then after 2 or 3 times you get that same annoying message again. :(

One way to find out is to wait a full 24 hours after you get that message, then see how many ppl you can rep in the next 24 hours before hitting the time limit again... :)

(I'm stuck too, for the moment... :( )

Question: does anybody know how much reputation you have to spread around before you can give it to the same poster again? I have been trying to give some points to the same people for about 3 days now, but I still can't give them points yet. I think I have given reputation points to about 15 people in the meanwhile, but that does not seem to be enough... The damn thing keeps telling me to spread some reputation around...

So do I just rate as many people as I can, right? :o

Lynx
Mar 21st, 2003, 02:42 PM
Hi, Mazza :)

Changed your nick, I see. :D

Well yes, if you're gonna participate in our little rate race, you'll have to rate people back, of course. If you're a real ruthless social climber, you'd better choose carefully who to rate too. :p

It's all a big game - but a game with some nasty thorns. People can get really offended if you rate them negatively; I don't do it anymore :o , and have made it up to those I once "punished" (just a few, luckily). I found out I only rated badly when in anger - and anger isn't a good advisor. I learned from this angele87 :) , a wonderful poster, who has this beautiful quote in her sig:

"Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret" - Ambrose Bierce.

I've made some damn good speeches, I can tell you. :o

It's not unimportant to know how much you're worth. If you don't know your own value, you can not make any good bargains. I still haven't figured out how the points work, though. Yes, it has to do with your posts: the more posts, the more points you give - but it also has to do with your own reputation: the more points you have yourself, the more you give too... can't work out the ratio though.

If you ever want to know how much points you give, just gimme some good rep  and I'll tell you how much you're worth
(But let me know first: I'll have to check how much points I have, then you can rate, then right after that I'll have to check again... before somebody else rates me.) (Of course you can do that with anyone you trust - pick a friend and you can keep each other informed...)

Since I decided to take part in the game myself I've mostly been enjoying it, maybe because I'm doing rather well - waaay better than I deserve, I darkly suspect :o.

Enjoy - you should do well: your amount of posts is high enough to attract other "players"... :)

No, I don't know yet: I keep forgetting to pay attention...

I think it might be about 20 people, though.
Since we can only rate 10 ppl in 24 hours (that seems to be pretty certain, now) that would mean AT LEAST 2 x 24 hours... longer if you didn't rate your full 20 ppl in 2 days... :)

1) No, not a stupid question - could very well have been the case. But:

2) No, you don't lose points by giving points. And:

3) No you're not stupid. :)

Mark,

I found out some things :bounce:

You can give out 11 reps each 24 hours in stead of 10 and you can rep the same person after 20 other reps so every 21 reps in fact...

But I don't care that much about the feature. It's fun sometimes to read the comments but I think the board would be as good without it...

I've edited the whole post (the last update was too long ago anyway); your findings are in it.

I don't care about the feature myself, although I've had a lot of fun with it already... to my own surprise. Also, for me it has resulted in way more pm-contacts than ever before (people saying - hey, sorry, can't pay you back yet... and sometimes you keep corresponding), so I'm not as opposed to it anymore as I have been.

But although some people are only recently finding out about it (where were they all this time  ), for others it has already last its spark - it isn't new anymore...

Webmasters - give us something new to play with while Kim doesn't play !!! :)

I am not into this reputation thingy at all, I only found out I was getting some points when I received a PM :o
I now try not to forget to give points to people if they've given me something... for the rest I really don't do anything with it, although I'll try to give points to posters here from now on, as it seems quite a lot like it. But forgive me if I forget it sometimes :o as I don't pay attention in fact... :o

You're welcome.

Hm - guys, feel free to bombard Ingrid with points, even if she isn't playing. Since she promises to give points back, it's important to build up her reputation... that way she will give considerably more herself   (but remember: she won't be able to see more than the last 5 benefactors...)
And ah, it's just a game. It's fun to read the little comments ppl give you (as long as they're positive :p ) and it's fun to think up comments.

At the start I have been trying to give all the CCL'ers points... but:

1) I have lost track :o (there are so many... and some don't seem to post anymore at all...)

2) quite a lot of them didn't seem interested at all. So I have become more selective - I'd rather give to somebody who likes it...
(But everybody here who says s/he likes it will get some reputation from me... if I see your post, that is, and if I'm able to give - there ARE restrictions). :) :) :)

Just enjoy it, peeps. Or ignore it if you really don't want to play... :)

Mandy, that's because you have to rep 20 others before you can rep the same person again. If you repped somebody 3 months ago, and you would try now... but you have only repped 10 others in between, you would get the message that you'd have to spread... You wouldn't be able to rep any of these 10 people, see? In fact, you wouldn't be able to rep any of the last 20 people you repped...

Another limit is that you cannot rep more than 11 people in 24 hours.

If you would really want to know what you're doing and keep things under control, you'd have to invest some work, lol. At the very least you'd have to write down the name of everyone you rep - and till there are 20 other names you'd know you won't be able to rep a certain person again...

It seems complicated, but it really isn't. :)

Lol, Majo. :)

Religion class, eh? Oooh... kayy. Economics are a much more realistic way to approach life, though - even in religion . "See, God, I'm spreadin' all this love around without expecting anything back - so I'm going to go straight to heaven, right?" :p

You wash my back, I wash yours - that's a sound and fair principle, understood all over nature.
You buy me a drink, I'll buy you one. Try backing out of that one in a bar - and see how popular you'll have become after a very short time... :p
(I may buy you more drinks than the other way around if I'm much richer than you - but that's ok, that's another kind of fairness.)

Second and/or third stage-love is all very well, but it's always better for the selfrespect of the receiver (and of the giver!) if s/he can give something in return. Better buy a product in a so-called third world country at a fair price, than flooding the country with money... making it's population into beggars.

... Damn, you got me preaching again  :o.

But hey, if you're going to start spreading love without expecting anything back :hearts:, give us a call, will you? . (You're not a nun yet, are you :p :o)

I agree partly on the giving and returning points thing, it's nice to get rep points back once you've given them.

But just as long as you're not going to balance it off. I've given him/her so much, he/she has only given me so much...now I'm angry... ;).

Oh,and euh...keep things decent in the Lounge, will you Mark :p ;) :D.

You can't balance it, agreed. I don't expect that either - I've said to a lot of people, and I meant it, that they shouldn't try to give me back every time (nor as much), nor feel guilty about it: the fact that I give to them means that I like them, so... religious stage # 2.5 :p.

But if I never receive anything back, not even an acknowledgement, I'm not going to keep giving - I'd feel used. Love cannot keep flowing in the same direction all the time. (But getting angry because of that is ridiculous, of course.)

And what do you mean, keep it decent? She was solliciting - you should talk to her :( :o. "I give, because I love you, and I don't expect anything in return..." - that's what she said to me...

you have to type them in yourself, like ": confused:" of ": mad:"

:wavey:

Lynx
Jul 4th, 2003, 12:37 PM
Marina, you have to type in the code for the smiley you want to use. For instance, a simple smile would be : ) - but without the space in between. A yawn would be : yawn: (but again, without the space after the colon).

You yourself won't see the smilies in your comment-line, though, you'd only see your code...

My advice: if you don't know the codes for the smilies, open a second window, open the reply (you can go back later with the back-key without replying anything), open the smiley-window; then go to the post you want to rate and open the rate-window; you'd still be able to see all the codes for the smilies in the smiley-window.

Or you can learn them by heart, they're not too difficult to remember. :)

nicky
Jul 4th, 2003, 12:37 PM
You can also open the smilie window (go to post reply, click on the "view more smilies" and then don't post the reply, just go back). You'll have a separate pop up window with all the smilies.
But that's a bit more work, so for rep points it might be more practical to just learn the most important/your favorit smilie codes :).

PS: you don't know Barrie, Majo? Aahh... ask Angèle. Or ask any other young "innocent" girl (or boy!) who wanders in NT and inadvertently bumps into the dude. For that matter - ask me. He tried to come on to me, too - can you imagine .

Perchance rep by different posters should be worth more than the same people "trading it"? The "variety" would more likely be a genuine reflection of the (perceived) quality of the actual posts. (Of course, I don't know if multiple ID's could be "auto-matched" by IP address to prevent "cheaters" from getting around this). :p Also, perhaps "big dots" could supercede the "lost count" little ones @ some point?

nicky
Jul 5th, 2003, 05:33 PM
Well, the fact that you have to rep 20 other posters before you can rep someone again is already a limitation of "trading points".
And after all, it is not THAT important, is it? It's just part of the fun ;) :).

Lynx
Jul 5th, 2003, 05:38 PM
And moreover, Roger - it's not true. :o

If reps from different people would be worth more, then some people would fall spectacularly in the rankings (I'm pretty sure I know who :tape: ), but others (once called "reputation whores" - but "traders" would be a fairer word imo) would soar even higher.

If you have gathered all the support you can get from all over the board, you would definitely have a much wider range of supporters than people who have been relying on their friends only... let alone on the quality of their posts. :)

Barrie my man - whatever got into you to dig up this old thread .

It's outdated anyway - they've been using 4 bytes for storage for ages now, which means a max amount of positive (or negative) rep points of over 2 billion: 2,147,483,647 to be exact.

Anyway: since 1 rep can give (or take away) 11 bubbles in 1 go nowadays, a lot of the fun - if fun it was  - has evaporated imo.

Amazingly, this thread is the only one I could find which gives the reputation ranks/comments (shown when you hover above the user's green or red dots). Thanks Lynx.
But the point allocation changed greatly some years ago:
It's outdated anyway - they've been using 4 bytes for storage for ages now, which means a max amount of positive (or negative) rep points of over 2 billion: 2,147,483,647 to be exact.
So it's unclear how many rep points are needed to move from one rank to another (the last one being "[user] has a reputation beyond repute").
Edit: I suspect the numbers are as in the OP multiplied by million, meaning 1 to 50mil for "[user] is on a distinguished road" and 2 billion for "[user] has a reputation beyond repute". But that's just a conjecture.

This thread is badly misplaced, it should be in the FAQ.
The rep thread there (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=58802) is bad, covers just the basic and doesn't even give the max points let alone says something about ranks.
Some of these things were/are treated here as top secret :tape:

Anyway: since 1 rep can give (or take away) 11 bubbles in 1 go nowadays, a lot of the fun - if fun it was  - has evaporated imo.
Yep, it's quite pointless and surely not the way the green dots thing is supposed to work.
