It is not decided yet of course. Mr. Tarpischev will announce his choice at the latest moment possible. But I think we can figure out who`ll be the members of the team already. Number 1 will definetely be Myskina. As ys mentioned she is a consistent player. At least she is consistent at the level of the Croatia team. Who`ll be number 2? That`s the most difficult question. I`m afraid Alyona Dementieva may be considered just as a bench player. I personally think that she should play as the number 2. Like Kafelnikov she has a team spirit and plays better in the Fed Cup matches. Besides, there are coaches in the team. So that solves one of her problems.
Who can be number 2 if not Dementieva? Bovina? Well she achieved just nothing this season. Semifinal loss to Dechy at Gold Coast and 4th round loss to Schaugnessy at Aus Open. Lina? Well she beat some quality players. But she is not a fighter, let`s face it. She will be of less value for the team than Dementieva without a doubt. Who else? Petrova, Safina, Zvonareva? Very doubtful. But anyway these two tier-1 tournaments will show girls` quality.
Right now the most likely line-up is Myskina (1), Dementieva (2), Bovina, Likhovtzeva (?), and a youngster like Zvonareva or Safina.

Before Fed Cup there will be a lot of tourneys to figure out who is in better form. I think nothing is certain. Any girl can get injured. We have so much depth, that, I think, we can beat Croatia even with the second team. I am pretty sure that indoors the Nadya, Lina, Tanya and Anna team would be also a favourite to beat Croatians. And even Vera, Dina, Sveta and Alinka team would be at least on even odds.. Hell, we got the depth..:)

fresh, Lina is a pretty good fighter plus its gonna be played indoors on carpet
and she has a 4-0 record vs Talaja
and 1-0 vs Majoli

Eggy, I just recall the tie with Slovakia, which was played under the difficult weather conditions. Well Alyona just went and played while Lina after her 1st set with Nagyova began to cry. And she lost eventually. Of course she can fight when the sun is shining and the people around are cheering for her. But she can`t keep her nerve in a hostile enviroment.

IMO coaches better stick with the ranking (given that #1,2,3 are healthy and willing to play)... otherwise, if Elena B is not chosen when she has a right to, she may say "no" next time when the team needs her.

If Elena D. wants to play for Russia, she should get her ranking AND play back to where it was 2 years ago. Simple.

Who usually play doubles for Russia in the Fed Cup?

At the moment, there are so many good doubles players that Russia would really benefit if the tie was 1 singles match and 4 doubles. (j/k)

On the other hand, most successful doubles players have their partners from other countries. Nastia/Dinara play together but they are not as successful as the other teams. So who is likely to be selected to play doubles?

Actually I would take into account which players would decide to prepare specifically for the tie, regardless of rankings. So, if a player would not play Amelie Island or Buidapest, and would spend a week in Moscow preparing for playing on fast indoors surface, than, if I were a captain, that would be a certain factor in selection. I.e., if Bovina plays Amelie Island or Budapest, while Dementieva practices indoors, I'd go for Dementieva.

Anyways, the bigger question is whether we should go and include player who, by their recent singles results and rankings, would have to be considered as a doubles specialist - like Elena L. or Nadya, or should we go for Nastya and three all-rounders - Elena D., Elena B. and Sveta? Or, given that the tie is not going to be difficult, should we use it to get another new player involved at #4 ( Dina or Vera?)

As to Lina being fighter or not - I'd say it is just liek with other girls. In most matches she would fight hard, but still likely to choke at the end.. I though was very pissed off after seeing her tank a match against Hingis at USO two years ago.

Get Nastya and Lena B to play singles and one of the younger girls to play doubles. Dinara/Sveta or maybe Lena D and Likhovtseva. That's my opinion on how it should be.
