actually i'm pretty shocked that she got a wild card at indian wells. not because she isn't good enough or doesn't have the talent, but because she hasn't played many challengers or wta events. i thought she would have played more challenges before she started getting wild cards. i thought she would get one at the french open but not indian wells.

it is a shock but it is a good shock.

it's unfortunate that she lost but she did really push schiavona who is in the top 50 and that is a good sign.

i have to say beating dulko so easily (6-2 6-3) made me really happy. i like dulko and she should be ranked at least in the top 100 but she doesn't play much and is inconsistent. but still a win by such a scoreline against a player of dulko's quality is pretty good.

Tatiana hasn't played juniors at all this yr
its her choice.
either that or the fft didn't sanction her.

Juniors can't enter tourns themselves, but have to be sanctioned by their governing body.

saw all 3 of her matches, she played pretty ok but nothing really too good.
Julia Cohen has no weapons, Tatiana just eased past her.
Lara was awful, Tatiana just had to get ball in

yesterday was more of a test from Vaidisova, she gave her a good match, over-powered Tatiana on most pts but made too many UE's, Tatiana served really good.

Tatiana's team is Joe Giuliano with some advice from Brad Gilbert.

In the quaters Tatiana had another loss to Krajicek(she must be really good) 1-6 4-6. Here's an article on the match:

From today Sept. 6:

Michaela Krajicek NED (2) def. Tatiana Golovin FRA (5) 6-1, 6-4

http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/re...2867067287.html

Another Krajicek Makes Her Mark
by Elizabeth Schatz
Saturday, September 6, 2003

Seven years after Richard Krajicek won Wimbledon, there is another Krajicek on the move – his half-sister, No. 2 Michaela. She reached the semifinals of the US Open juniors tournament Saturday with a straight-set win over No. 5 Tatiana Golovin of France, 6-1, 6-4.

At just 14 years old, the Dutch Krajicek has a remarkable cache of sharp shots, including a serve down the middle that rendered the 15-year-old Golovin helpless. Krajicek broke Golovin twice in the first set with sideline winners and a deft overhead that she lobbed past Golovin more than once when the Frenchwoman came to net.

While Golovin's seemed sluggish and morose at the end of the first set, she eventually found her spark in the second. Her razor-sharp groundstrokes helped her break Krajicek twice, including one marathon game at 4-3 that saw six deuces. But Krajicek held on to gain her own third break to go up 4-5 and serve it out for the match.

Overall, Golovin's inconsistency was her downfall. She followed up several minutes of excellent play with untimely double faults and errors. Krajicek simply showed more tenacity and intelligence with her shots.

It must be in her genes.

Krajicek will play again Saturday in the semifinals, facing American Cory Ann Avants.

I joined this match at 5-0 and MGM had the trainer out, i'm not sure what it was, but she was lying down in front of her chair. I havent seen MGM play that much, so I'm not sure if she was hampered as i dont know how she normally moves or hits. Tatiana was really impressive, she was hitting hard and going for her shots on every point, and making hardly any unforced errors and many winners. I think she can definitely do well in the future, she is as good as most top 100 players now and can improve. She took the first set 6-0 and went up 2-0 in the 2nd, and she had break point when MGM just walked off the court again and called for the trainer in the middle of the game. Tatiana was a bit pissed off i think, she said to the umpire "how many times can she call the trainer?". MGM retired a bit later, but Tatiana probably would have won anyway, she was playing that well.

:D

Congrats to Tatiana on another great win! :) Routining Anna Smashanova-Pistolesi is a great accomplishment! :D

It's hard to believe Tati is still only 15 years old. I've been hearing about her for years. I'm glad she's starting to live up to her potential. Tatiana's next match is against 19 year old Russina Lina Kransoroutskaya. Lina is playing well. But she doesn't like players plays younger than she is. I think knowing that Tatiana is only 15 will make Lina nervous. I think Tati will beat Lina in 3 sets.

Tatiana dominated Smashnova-Pistolesi with her power. And the statistics prove it. Tatiana had 24 winners to only 4 for Smashnova-Pistolesi! :bounce: Here's the link for the Golovin/Smashnova-Pistolesi match statistics. Tati has officially withdrawn from the juniors at the Oz Open; no big suprise there

Golovin's Early Birthday Present

MELBOURNE, Australia - Reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam is nothing new for the likes of Kim Clijsters, Chanda Rubin or Anastasia Mykina (right), but for French wildcard Tatiana Golovin, it's a career-first achievement and an early birthday present.

Golovin's 62 76(4) upset of No.23 seed Lina Krasnoroutskaya came one day before her 16th birthday, and she's the first wildcard in the Open Era to reach the Australian Open fourth round.

"I was just really happy having the wildcard," said Golovin, who received the wildcard in a reciprocal agreement between Tennis Australia and the French Tennis Federation.

"We worked really hard all winter. My goal was to pass a few matches, get a few points. I just started to play really well. I'm feeling confident now. I'm just hoping to have a good match on Monday."

Golovin, who has had to pull out of the junior event to concentrate on her senior campaign, next meets No.25 seed Lisa Raymond, an upset winner over No.3 seed Venus Williams.

The winner of that match will meet either No.22 seed Patty Schnyder or No.29 Nathalie Dechy for a place in the semifinals. It would be a career-first final four showing for any of the four women.

On Saturday, Schnyder defeated No.12 seed Paola Suarez 75 63 to reach the fourth round here for the fifth time. The Swiss 25-year-old, however, has never reached the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park.

Dechy was a 75 61 winner over Japan's Saori Obata.

On paper, the bottom quarter of the draw is a much stronger section, with No.2 seed Clijsters, No.6 Myskina and No.9 Rubin advancing on Day 6.

Clijsters was untroubled by Russian teenager Dinara Safina, reaching the fourth round here for the fourth time with a 62 61 win.

"From the start when I played Weingartner and Camerin and today as well, I've been playing really good and at the moments where I had to," Clijsters said of her form this week. "Today, there were a few moments I was breakpoint down, and I recovered really well."

Clijsters meets No.20 seed Silvia Farina Elia for a quarterfinal berth, after the Italian outlasted American veteran Amy Frazier, 46 61 75.

It will be a rematch of their Wimbledon quarterfinal of last year, won by Clijsters in three sets.

In a busy day for the Russians, Myskina set up a fourth round rematch with Rubin after a hard-fought 64 16 62 win over compatriot Maria Sharapova.

"Right now I feel great," said Myskina. "During the match, it wasn't kind of really good because I was really nervous. Again, when two Russians play, it's always a kind of nervous match. I know that was not really the best match today, but I'm really happy that I won."

"In the third set I made some stupid unforced errors, when I didn't really need to," said a disappointed Sharapova. "But those kind of things, I think will just take experience, just things here and there."

Rubin was an easy 63 62 winner over another Russian, Elena Likhovtseva. Myskina defeated Rubin in three sets in the same round here last year to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

I thought Tatiana had a good chance to beat Lina Krasnoroutskaya and I was right. But she will have a tough match against Lisa Raymond in the round of 16. Raymond is almost twice as old as Tatiana is. She has the experience. But Tati has the youth and energy to beat Raymond. I think Raymond could have a letdown after beating Venus Williams and Tati needs to be ready to pounce on Raymond if she's lethargic.

French wildcard a winner

January 24, 2004

MELBOURNE PARK, January 24 - While Lisa Raymond set Rod Laver Arena alight today with a straight sets upset over No.3 seed Venus Williams, the girl she is to play in the fourth round also attracted ripples of attention that are sure to become giant waves.

Tatiana Golovin is the recipient of the Tennis Australia-French Tennis Federation wildcard exchange program and has made good use of her free ticket into Australian Open 2004 by reaching the fourth round of her first Grand Slam tournament.

http://www.tennisaustralia.com.au/pages/image.aspx?assetId=RDM38010.7194995949
Tatiana Golovin on her way to the AO 2004 fourth round.

And she’s turning 16 tomorrow. And she’s been coached by Brad Gilbert. And she was born in Russia.

So the credentials are impeccable, which may be why Golovin, who is entered in the Australian Open Junior Championships starting Monday, has been pegged as a future world beater.

"I was just really happy having the wildcard," said Golovin, who beat Russian Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-2 7-6(4) today and No.14 seed Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi in the second round.

"We worked really hard all winter. My goal was to pass a few matches, get a few points. I just started to play really well. I’m feeling confident now."

Golovin is a product of the Nick Bollettieri academy in Florida, where she spent seven years between 1996 and 2003 after moving to France from Russia at the age of one.

But she puts her success this week down to an intensive last December training with French compatriots Amelie Mauresmo and Nathalie Dechy and working with her new coach, Pierre Cherret, from the French Tennis Federation.

"We went to the mountains, we worked for two weeks in the mountains, skiing, doing a lot of cardios. I think that helped me a lot out there today."

Golovin worked with Gilbert, now Andy Roddick’s coach, during the US Open and Wimbledon, when she played juniors, and says she still keeps in contact with him.

"I’ve known him for like a year and a half now," said Golovin. "I go to his house, practice a little bit."

Golovin is now ranked No.354 in the world and is only allowed to play a maximum of eight professional events a year, to prevent burnout.

Regrettably, she is expected to pull out of the Australian Open junior championships to play Raymond on Monday, and will not play another WTA Tour event until Indian Wells in March.

I caught this match, and well Tati played great :D She kept her unforced error's down, and ran down lots of balls and forced Lina into error.

She has a good serve, and can generate lots of pace from it. I would say her Forehand is a bigger weapon, but her backhand is more consistent.

I took lots of pictures, but they are crap :o ;)

Well done Tati :D

This is what Lindsay Davenport has said about Tatiana Golovin:

"I think rarely it's a coincidence when they're that young. I think girls that normally break through at that young of age are always pretty solid technically and pretty solid in their games so I don't think it's gonna be a fluke. I say that never having seen her hit a ball but I would be surprised if she wasn't doing well the next few years and improving."

Interview with Tati from www.opengazdefrance.com (http://www.opengazdefrance.com) in English & French

You will meet Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi in the first round of the Open Gaz de France; she is a player you defeated in the Australian Open. Are you happy with the draw ?
For my part, the draw is quite good. I played Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi in Australia and that was fine. I hope to do the same here.

How would you describe her game ?
She is player who runs very well, she is in very good conditions and she hits back all the balls. I will have to be patient and to play like I did in Australia. I played a very good match. I will have to take the advantage and to go up to the net and to play in a quite aggressive manner.

You will play on a different surface from the one in Melbourne. Do you feel as at ease on synthetic as on Rebound Ace ?
I train in Roland-Garros at the CNE (Natinal Training Centre) on this kind of surface and I prepared all the winter long on it. I think that I am a bit experienced, that I am used to it. It is a surface which suits me, I play well on and everything should be fine.

What does the Open Gaz de France mean to you ?
It is a very important tournament for me. Gaz de France is my sponsor and they have been supporting me for several years now. It is a great pleasure for me to play here, in Paris. I am well prepared, I have quite confident after my Australian path. I hope that everything will be fine.

After your recent Australian path, the public is expecting a lot from you. Do you feel any pressure ?
I think that there is always pressure. You should pay to much attention to what people think. I have to focus on my game, on my training. I have to set very-high standards for myself, that’s the most important thing. For the moment, everything is fine but I think that, before entering the court, the stress will rise a bit!

What will you do till then ?
Train. I will prepare and I play here to get used to the conditions.

You spent several years in the United-States. What did those years bring to you ?
I spent seven years in the United-States between 7 and 14 that is where I learnt playing and loving tennis. Over there, I met the best players. But things had to change. I came back to France, at the Federation; I have been training with Pierre Cherret, who has become my personal coach. I think that it was I need to go further.

You have just turned 16 and you can play 10 tournaments a year. How do you manage the in-between tournament period ?
I twill be quite hard but, if I play good tournaments and if I have good results, and if I am close to the Top 50 or Top 60, I might play more tournaments. Anyway, that is my objective. Till the French Open, my schedule is quite busy, I have a lot of competitions to play. I’ll how everything will go.

You are considered as the “French Kournikova”, what do you think about it ?
I think that’s nice. I know Anna very well; she is a very nice girl. She also belonged to the Top 10, which is one of my objectives as well. :hearts:

Do you have something to say about the match opposing Mary Pierce to Nathalie Dechy ?
Yes, that’s a pity! But I think that the public will love it. They are good friends, so it will be a good match, that’s for sure. That’s a pity because there will one less French player in the draw but it will be a nice match.
_____________________________________________

That was a great win for Tatiana over Elena Dementieva. :D And it's the first top ten win of her career. :)

I'm sure Tati pounded Elena's weak creampuff second serve and that probably set the tone for the match.

Sonja, I think Tatiana could get a wildcard into either Indian Wells or Miami. My guess is Indian Wells because Indian Wells is an IMG run tournamnet and Tatiana is an IMG client.

Tatiana will be 90 after the Open Gaz de France, and she has no point to defeated before Indian Wells, so she dosn't need a WC to play because Indian Wells and Miami, the :wavey: re are 96 players!!

WTATour.com Win of the Week

French teenager Tatiana Golovin scores her first win against a Top 10 opponent, defeating Elena Dementieva. PARIS - Tatiana Golovin is making a name for herself in professional tennis and isn't wasting anytime doing so.

The 16-year-old captivated audiences at the Australian Open, rolling past Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi and Lina Krasnoroutskaya among others to reach the fourth round.

Now she's reached her first WTA Tour semifinal and defeated a top 10 opponent in the process. With her terrific week at the Open Gaz de France, she was also the lowest-ranked player to reach a Tier I or Tier II semifinal since Serena Williams, then ranked world No.304, reached the 1997 Chicago semifinals. Her stunning quarterfinal victory against Elena Dementieva is this week's WTATour.com Win of the Week.

A wildcard in Paris, Golovin began her second event of the season much like the first, with a match against Smashnova-Pistolesi. The result also turned out in Golovin's favor, a three-set victory when Smashnova-Pistolesi was forced to pull out of the match in the third with muscle cramping.

Golovin then got a break in her second round match when she received a walkover after Daniela Hantuchova could not compete in the match due to an upper respiratory infection.

Next, it was on to a clash with World No. 10 Elena Dementieva and a spot in the semifinals. In only her 11th career WTA Tour main draw singles match, Golovin recorded her first Top 10 win with a shocking 64 64 victory against the Russian. In doing so, Golovin became the sixth fastest woman to defeat a top 10 player in the Open Era.

Her efforts in Paris and surprise performance in Melbourne was enough to lift the young Frenchwoman into the Top 100 at No. 91 in this week's WTA Rankings. She was No. 135 the previous week and started the season ranked outside the Top 300.

French representation was guaranteed for the final as Golovin went up against veteran Mary Pierce. Hampered by a left hip strain, Golovin was treated by a WTA Tour primary health care provider after dropping the first set. Golovin's week ended with a 64 60 loss to Pierce, but she wasn't totally disappointed in her efforts.

"I didn't know if I would be able to play today," explained Golovin. "I tried to do my best, but it didn't help.

"I had a great week; I'm not disappointed. Today I was not 100 percent, so it's normal that I lost."

A report about Tatiana praticing:

Well this was a crazy first day that had many great but also one bad point. First, the bad:My CF card for my digital camera decided to stop working towards the end of the day so I believe I have lost about 200 photos and 5-6 video clips of Andre Agassi, Daniela Hantuchova, Anastasia Myskina, Maria Sharapova, Tatiana Golovin, Zuzana Ondraskova and a few other players http://wtaworld.com/ubb/mad.gif Luckily Daniela and Anastasia were still practicing when I realized my card was F'ing up so I was able to get some of them on the camera's internal memory at least. This means I will be only be able to take about 42 pics a day http://wtaworld.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif You can check out some of the pics I saved to my camera's memory at my Yahoo group I uploaded them to here (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wtagirls/?yguid=7163712) You have to be a member and logged in to view the group
Now on with the good: First I will go thru the practices. Andre Agassi drew a bigger crowd for his practice than even the matches on Stadium court drew and I was one of the fortunate few to get him to autograph a ball for me before he took off.

I got to watch Daniela Hantuchova practice with Anastasia Myskina for a good hour and they both looked great. I would really like to see them playing doubles together but I believe Daniela is playing with Schett. Huge crowd was there to watch these two and they traded back and forth with some great shots, this practice was better then any of the matches I saw all day. Both of them stopped and signed autographs and took a few pics.

I was very impressed watching Tatiana Golovin practicing, this was the first time I had seen her in person and I think she has a very bright future. She is also pretty cute which will help her cause in trying to attain more attention. I watched her go thru about 20 minutes of her practice and she already has very good form and pretty nice power. I talked with her for a minute and got an autograph from her on the same page as Maria Sharapova...I think I will keep that page nice and safe somewhere http://wtaworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Maria Sharapova looked great as usual, I think she will do very well in this tourney. Watched her for awhile and really saw no weakness in her game and she has alot of power. She was also kind enough to stop and sign autographs and take pics with us after her practice.

Zuzana Ondraskova looked pretty good, she is tall, blonde and cute so of course she drew a sizeable crowd. She is pretty young and still needs some work and a little more power and she could be a pretty good player. She was practicing with Chladkova and she held her own against her.

This probably wont do anything for any of you but I got to meet and watch Jennifer Hopkins practice for awhile. I REALLY like her, she is very sweet and I think she is pretty damn fine too http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/hearts.gif She lost in the Qualifying round so hopefully she can work on her game and get better.

Matches:
M.Mikaelian d. Z. Ondraskova-Good match, it went 3 sets and Ondraskova played well but just couldn't get it done against her older and wiser opponent. I think Ondraskova should be very good in the near future.

L.Kurhajcova d. M.Kirilenko-This was a 2 set whoopin'!! I really dont see how anyone could think Kirilenko is better and has a brighter furure then Sharapova or Golovin because she flat out sucks http://wtaworld.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Maybe she just had an off day but I saw nothing at all in her gamne to be excited about, she is decent at best.

T.Golovin d. S.Asagoe-I was really surprised at this outcome. Golovin should be a big star soon if she continues at the rate she is going. She had to go 3 sets to win but looked pretty convincing against a pretty decent opponent.

I.Benesova d. E.Gagliardi-I was hoping to see Emmanuelle play a bit better but Benesova was really on today, she hit quite a few nice shots and blew Ema out in the 3rd set.

K.Brandi d. D.Chladkova-I only saw part of this match due to other matches overlapping but Chladkova did not really impress me, I thought she would be better given some of the hype I have heard about her.

I was right, wasn't I, TA? ;) I figured Tatiana would win. But I didn't think she would dominate the match the way she did. I thought Safina would be able to put up a fight against Golovin. But Tatiana hammered her. I hope the Nadsdaq-100 Open posts Tatiana's interview on their website. But I doubt they will. :(

I think Tati is a big contender for the "most impressive newcomer 2004" from the WTa
I expected big things from her, but never expected what she 's doing now.
I hope she can keep it up!

comparison with Pierce
Pierce born in 75, 1990-106, 1991-26, breaks into top 100 then top 30 at age 16
first title came in 1991 at age 16, reached her first QF in RG at 17,
first Tier II above title in 1993 at age 18, then won her slam in 1995 at 20 to reach #3,

for Tatiana, to surpass Mary, she'll have to break into top 50 at the end of clay season
then have a nice American hardcourt season to reach around top 30. with AER, it's not easy for her to play like Mary did when she was 16, hopefully she can get a title this year tho.
anyways, good luck, and just a side-note, funny how the greatest French player is actually from Canada, while Tatiana is from Russia, think about it:)

Tati beat Jelena Jankovic 6-7(4) 6-1 7-5 in more than 2 hours :eek::worship::D :D

Tatiana was up 6-5 and had 2 set points during the first set, in the second she crushed Jelena and in the third Tatiana was down 4-5* but won 3 straight games :hearts: I'm so proud of Tati she fought until the end :worship:

and btw, as always Bollieteri is wrong with his predictions

Tatiana Golovin vs Jelena Jankovic
1 Aces 0
35 1st serve pts won 37
57% 1st serve in play 66%
16 2nd serve pts won 11
41% 2nd serve pts won % 30%
 1 winners 0
4 Doubles faults 0
10 Break point conversions 6
110 total points won 89

in the 4th round Tatiana will play against Daniilidou or Capriati, at the moment Eleni is winning 6-2 4-2*

That was a good clutch win for Tatiana over Jelena Jankovic. :)

TA, I read Nick Bollettieri's predictions, too. Nick Bollettieri did leave the door open so to speak and say Tatiana could win the match against Jankovic. If Tatiana was still training at Bolelttieri's I'm sure Nick would have picked Tatiana to win. ;)

I can't wait until tatiana plays Maria Sharapova for the first time as professional. That should be very interesting.
