Mike, Pistol-girl avatar now on.
Aaron though . I mean come on, that little Jelena avatar is small & useless... I didn't take the Jenn avatar, so you shouldn't use the Jelena avatar. As simple as that.

Well Anna's draw is not horrible at all. Black or Taylor in round 2, then probably Panova in round 3... Then probably Martinez (i don't thing Jelena will make it that far). I think Anna can make the 4th round, but i think she will lose to Martinez. & if she will manage to win that, it's Daniela in the quarters.

But i still think Anna got a good draw.

If Anna plays well, she can make the quarters. If she doesn't, expect her to fall to Black in the 2nd round or Panova in the 3rd.

*Applause - Applause* Yes, I know! How exciting it is to be back for yet another week of fun-filled tennis action with Anna Pistolesi.

Anna finds herself the #11 seed this week, an improvement from last year, where she was unseeded. This opens up many possibilites in her draw.

After the terrible "bye" in the first round, Anna will face fastcourt player Cara Black, or relatively unknown Sarah Taylor. Black holds the advantage over Pistolesi right now, with an easy win on grass in Birmingham in 1998. Black is still trying to break out of a slump from last year, though very slowly. Taylor and Pistolesi have never played. Black should be the winner of that match and Pistolesi will have a nice opening match.

Pistolesi's third round opponent will most likely be either nineteenth seeded Tatiana Panova or Emanuelle Gagliarid. Ironically, it was Gagliardi who beat Pistolesi at Indian Wells last year and Panova who beat Pistolesi at Miami the following week. However, Pistolesi holds a 4-3 advantage over Gagliardi, having split the matches they played last year (Anna won easily on the claycourts of Vienna later in the year). Pistolesi and Panova are tied at 1, with Anna taking their first match desively in the final of Auckland last year before falling later in a three-set match in Miami. Anna should be able to pull through this match to get to the fourth round.

From there, the competition becomes interesting. Based on seeding alone, Anna should face top ten player, Jelena Dokic, or at least #26 Conchita Martinez. However, given recent form, the winner of that section could be a bit different. Dokic holds a 3-1 lead over Pistolesi, winning 2 of their 3 matches last year (all of the matches they played in 2002 were on clay). Martinez holds a 2-0 advantage over Pistolesi, although the last time they played was during Martinez's prime in 1999. The player who will come through is a big question mark, but based on how everyone seems to be playing as of right now, Anna should be able to defend most of her points and make it to the Quarterfinals.

Once there, Pistolesi sets up a clash with #3 seed Daniela Hantuchova. Being the defending champion, Hantuchova will be out for blood and will certainly not be a pushover. The pair have split meetings, with Anna winning in the Quarterfinals of Berlin on clay and with Hantuchova taking the match on carpet in Linz, although the fact that it was a three set match on a surface that Pistolesi abhors, makes things interesting, showing that she is a real threat to the world #5. Certainly not impossible for the world #16, this could be an extremely entertaining match, which could have an upset looming.

After that, nobody knows who will emerge as the Semifinalist from the top quarter. Kim Clijsters, Chanda Rubin, Ai Sugiyama, and Nathalie Dechy (who beat Clijsters here last year) are all huge possiblities, but all challenges that Anna Pistolesi is certainly ready to face.

My *logical* prediction: Anna falling to either Panove in the 3rd round, or Martinez in the 4th :o

Sorry, that's just the way i see it.

Thanks Mike for that great analysis! :) Dang! Why didn't I wait a little longer? Now the website is stuck with my crap!

I do see Anna making the 4th round. I just think Dokic (You might think I'm bias) will be her opponent. If Dokic can get past Rittner/Drake, she can string a couple of wins together.
