View Full Version : Pierce vs. Zheng

I think Jie has a chance..... her backhand can surely handle the pace of Pierce. If she maximises her first serves and moves Mary around, she can do some damage. I am starting to see Jie as top 100 material....she is showing some consistency in results.
This will be a good experience for Jie, she can see how she ranks against the top players like Pierce. Jie hits a backhand as hard as i have seen a female hit a backhand! - so if she gets some accuracy going, she can be dangerous!

Good luck Jie !!!

Mary is too fat, Move her around Jie.

Mary's serve and forehand will just blow Jie's little chinese buttom off the court in less then an hour! 6-1, 6-1 for queen Mary!

Tough draw for Jie :( . Not the one I was hoping at least. Well no doubt Jie will try her best. I just hope it will be good enough...

You're right V.Melb, Jie better keep her first serve % high, or she'll get blasted on her second serve. I hope she'll keep some consistency on her forehand. Normally, she can keep a good pace with this forehand against powerful opponents.

V.Melb, did you see Jie play at the Oz Open this year?

I hope Mary wins:wavey:

If Jie plays like she did at Aus Open quallies, she'll get blown away.

But if she plays like you guys said, then maybe she can make it competitive.

If I were a betting man I'd still say Mary in two easy sets.

TS, I was very shocked by Jie results at the Oz Open. What happened to her?

As for Jie head to head with top players :

Fed Cup (WG-PO)
20 Jul 2002 - 21 Jul 2002

R1 Jie ZHENG (CHN) L Tatiana PANOVA (RUS) 3-6 1-6
R3 Jie ZHENG (CHN) L Elena DEMENTIEVA (RUS) 4-6 0-6

Ooops, I forgot that one :

Fed Cup (AO1-SF) CHN d. INA 2-1 in CHN
Asia/Oceania Group I SF
09 Mar 2002 - 09 Mar 2002

R1 Jie ZHENG (CHN) D Angelique WIDJAJA (INA) 6-4 6-2

Yes i did see Jie at aus open qualies. She was obviously not playing her best at all. But even then, her backhand was evidently powerfull. She still has many things in her game to touch up, but she can only get better. Her second serve is probably gonna get eaten up by mary, but as i said, i don't want to judge her game too much based on her aus open match....she is obviously better then that.

Steveg, I dont know....but the match with Krivencheve was pretty bad (from both players). I think she would prefer playing harder hitters (as that first set with Dementieva shows), but couldn't get into a rhythm with Krivencheva. Also, Jie made plenty of mistakes in that match...must have been a really bad day for her.

She's had some decent results to get in the top 200 so she's obviously a good player, let's hope she can improve aspects of her game and get the ball rolling for Chinese tennis (poor Na Li looked like she would pick up where Jing-Quan Yi left off, but injuries/illness I think have stuffed that up :()

Thanks V.Melb and TS :) .

For LI Na, I heard she's getting married ;) . But nothing confirmed yet.

And for Zie, I hope she'll move quickly into the top 150 from her current top 200 position.

Feb 4th, 2003, 05:34 AM
Is she getting married? wow, good for her :)

But is that the reason she stopped? Or is she just taking a break? I just figured she was injured :o Well it's a shame if she retired cos she really could have gotten into the top 100 easily, and had a good career.

Feb 4th, 2003, 06:16 AM
I think that the reason why Na stopped is a mixed of personal reasons, including (among others) :

- new family life (to be confirmed)
- illness

I pretty much doubt we will see Na again on courts.

But to come back to this thread, good luck to Jie :D .
