i have always wondered why tokyo would have three wta events in a year. i'd say fans in tokyo are the happiest at least in asia. is there anyone who can talk a little about this?

Actually, one of them (Toyota Princess Cup) are sold out to Shanghai for a Tier II event. So, we have only two Japanese events this year.

And during the 90's there were WTA tournaments in Osaka, Nagoya & Sapporo too before the crash of Japanese economy

I think the other reason that there were big events
In Nagoya, and Osaka back in the 90's was because
Kimiko Date is from that part of Japan. The Kansai
region as it's known in Japanese- Kimiko is a Kyotoite.

Oh- who can forget that big Fed Cup match with
Japan vs the USA in Nagoya? That was the best
ever showing of Japan in Fed Cup.

Well the last time we had a wta event here in Kansai is in '94 when Manuela played her final professional match here. that was exactly when Kimiko started getting attention internationally. so was rather ironic, she got into top 10 and the event was gone. there was also an exhibtion event in Osaka where many of the top players played for the lucratic prize money. Amanda won it once beating Lisa back in '93 which I attended in the stands. as much as I miss toyota princess cup, I think it s a good thing for Asia as a whole that the event was sold n moved to shanhai. and as far as Japan open goes, it s rather men's event as women's field is very weak n could be a tier 4 level. It s pre much the same as the events in Bali n Thailand. so now we have only one big event in Japan...sad....

Greenout you seem quite knowledgeble about the Japanese tennis as well as Japan itself. Have you been here before?
Yeah that was a classic, real terrifying match.. that was another tokyo totalitarian government doing... the match was actually aird only in Kanto area meaning we didnt have the tv coverage here in Osaka. I was like damn it!!! I was really angry as much as I was happy for Japan and Kimiko. I ve never got to see even the tape. would ve been the greatest match I d ever seen... fuck...

Yes, I've been to Japan. It's one of topics I studied in
University. Anyway- what heartache. Kimiko and the
team beat Steffi/Anke in Tokyo in the QF's only to
pick Nagoya as the semi final venue, and lose all the
matches!! I recall reading a newspaper article which sort
of blamed Ai for the bad form. lol. Poor Ai. I guess next
to Kimiko she did seem to lack alot of charisma.

Wasn't there alot of big ITF junior tennis events in Osaka too?

Which reminds me one of my favorite comedians/actors
are those two guys known as DOWNTOWN. You know..
Hamada, and the other guy what's his name? He wrote
a book. These guys are hilarious. :)

I always thought the greatest showing of Japan in Fed Cup was that win over Germany with Kimiko beating Graf 12-10 in the third...

And yes, there's a Grade A Junior Tournament in Osaka

spiceboy- what I meant is getting into the semi final.
Let's not talk about the total slaughter they had in
the hands of Mary Jo, Monica, and Lindsay coached
by of all people original Martina in the semi final.

Who if you remember got alot of flack for harangue style
coaching methods and sort of resigned as US Fed Cup
captain. lol Pretty weird that the US won so easily
considering how it wasn't going to smoothly in team
USA's on the personal front.

And as I said before the Japanese press sort of used
Ai Sugiyama as the scapegoat for the loss to the USA.

DownTown are the most popular commedians among the young ppl. Hamada n Matsumoto.. esp the latter one is funny.

yes we have a big junior event every year in october. as the admission was free, I went to see some of the junior matches played there. this year was special as the japanese players did well. Ryoko Fuda won the girl's compe n Go Soeda made it to the final only to lose a very close three setter.
I saw Shuzo Matsuoka n as i happened to be sitting near him, I talked to him. He was nice but a bit too enthusiastic....

by the way Mary Joe didnt come. I was in the stands cheering from the Japanese only to see them slaughtered by the big Americans, Monica & Lindsay. I was there in the first days of the tie. Mary Joe was supposed to participate but she withdrew n was replaced by Linda Wild.

as for the press blaming Ai, actually Ai played well against Monica. it should have been Kimiko who was to blame as she played a real bad match against Lindsay. I saw them play in my eyes. Im telling you, Ai played a very guttsy match against Monica. even Monica said after the match, Ai had the best serve among the Japanese players she had taken on. the score was miserable but the match itself was way way closer than the scoreline indicates. I was really disappointed at Kimiko's performance. She came off the wimbledon semifinal showdown. so expected the other way around result. well...

Kimiko argued with Japanese tennis association around then??
She didn't get motivations from the issue, I kinda remember...

Oh no more Toyota Princess Cup?? didn't know that!!
I went Ariake (then, the tourney called Nichirei Ladies) in 95 or so... when Kimiko played Lindsay in 2R or so... Lindsay was still in HS and her ranking was 30 or so... I still remember she was really huge!!!

In Japan, there r so many ppl playing tennis... but the env./fac. are really bad there... so $$$ to play tennis!!!

There's finally showing "Ashita ga aru sa" over here in
Singapore. Yeah, I know it's kind of late; but still it's better
than no show. I love this show. Funny!!

I've got a question for anyone. Is Fujii Takashi gay? I'm
just wondering because he's kind of normal on "Ashita ga Aru Sa";
but I have seen him as out of character on "Hey, hey music
Champ", and "Music Station" and he is such a
queen; a real flamer". lol.

Yes, Matsumoto is the name of the other guy in DT. Again-
this man is hilarious. Don't care for London Boots? Why
are they popular- I find them annoying. I also do like
the guys in 99. In fact i actually have a t-shirt of their
logo from one of my other trips to Japan.

Ok- I admit; I don't know what the hell they all say
sometimes because of the thick Osaka slang; but still it's
funny. I should purchase that Osaka dialect for beginners
from the bookshop. Seriously there is an English dictionary/
text book on the Osaka dialect. "Okini.." yeah really.
