She's #25 now.

1669 14 Magdalena Maleeva
1544 15 Silvia Farina Elia
1537 16 Anna Pistolesi
1442 17 Elena Bovina
1386 18 Martina Hingis
1379 19 Eleni Daniilidou
1374 20 Nathalie Dechy
1327 21 Alexandra Stevenson
1316 22 Elena Dementieva
1301 23 Amanda Coetzer
1259 24 Tatiana Panova
1191 25 Paola Suarez

She needs points. She got her best points at RG last year.
Reputed to be best on clay, but last year had several notable
first round CLAY flameouts. Here's the schedule.

Defense of last year's points, plus reasonable
showings at Indian Wells, Berlin and Rome could spell
top sixteen seed at Roland Garros.

It's a 400 point gap, but there are a lot of red clay
tournaments to play in. She's got to get rid of the
early round losses.

I think its possible

but Id say Clarisa Fernandez is a better pick to not neccesarily get a 16 seed but to get up there in the rankings and improve

MAURO

PAOLA CAN DO IT

Paola is an excellent player... I'm sure she'll be able to do it!

I hope Paola can do it. I really like her and think that she has talent. I was surprised how easily she lost to Venus at Amelia Island last year.

C'mon Paola! Let's kick some butt and get you seeded for RG!

She has grown up. She said her goal was to be in top 20. In the last 2 season she ended inside 30's and I think her tennis is working a lot better. She took Patty Schnyder to 3 tight sets in Sydney, so this means she is improving her game also in hardcourts.

I am sure she will do very well in clay season. She is favorite to win Bogota this year, and maybe why not Acapulco.

Best wishes to this amazing player:wavey:

MAURO

MAURO

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

LucasArg
Jan 27th, 2003, 11:55 PM
She needs to beat Raymond first then Maleeva. It's hard but not impossible. But this is like carpet, so I don't exepect too much for Paola in Tokyo.

I do think she will have a tremendous clay season. Maybe 2 titles;)

MARTINA HINGIS LOST A LOT OF POINTS LIKE 300
SO PAOLA IS 24 NOW

MAURO

Paola is 25 again this week
see at her in the clay season and in Indian Wells and Miami
and she could do it

i don't think she can. she would have to pull off some pretty big upsets. i think she could over take stevenson and raymond in the rankings but then players like fernandez and maybe mikaelian might overtake her if they get good results.

it would be very tough for her unless some players pull out of the open or get injured and can't play.

SHe still has chances. I think she will win Bogota and Acapulco. I hope she will have a better draw for Indian Wells where she lost in the 1st round last year.

Good Luck Paola!!!

Paola can't do anything on surfaces other than clay except in doubles, so don't expect her to improve much at Indian Wells and Miami. She also has a lot of points to defend. I don't see her ranking improving so drastically before Roland Garros.

MAURO

in 2002 she arrived at 3rd round in Miami so she can do it the same in Indian Wells
and then come the clay season
Berlin and Rome are good tournaments for her in 2003

Paola certainly can play on other surfaces than clay (she is not a one dimensional clay courter) and I really hope she can finally crack the top 20 soon :) I believe she is playing some of her best tennis now, but unfortunately she is losing very tight 3 setters :(

Hopefully that turns around and she can start rackin up those wins!

Well, she reached the 4th round in OZ in 2001 and 3rd this year. Of course, she plays much better on clay, but she is challenging a lot of hardcourt players too.

I agree with TS too:wavey:

Go Paola!!!:wavey: :bounce: :wavey:

Today is 26 becausa Ai Sugiyama got a lot of points beaten Jelena Dokic
but on monday is the time of Paola in Bogota and Acapulco.
The 20-25, Stevenson, Panova, Raymond, Sugiyama, Coetzer had a lot of points to defend.
Paola also in Acapulco but not in Bogota.
Then Indian Wells, Roma and Berlin are tournaments for Paola.

i don't think stevenson will defend her runner up points in memphis because she is most likely to play zvonareva in the quarters and if alex is playing badly then she can say bye bye to the tournament and her points.

coezter and farina elia both have a good shot at the final now that irvin is out. IMO irvin was the danger woman who could create upsets but she just lost in the first round to cacic.

raymond would have to play stevenson or zvonareva in the semis. she is playing well but i think zvonareva would probably beat her.

i'd say paola could move up a few spots but i don't think she could get to the top 16 unless there are injuries.

I don't see her becoming more than a top 20 player. Sure it is possible for her to get to a 16 seed. Players could be injured etc., but Paola doesn't have any thing exciting about her game. She is solid and has nice topspin, but, you know, maybe she will prove me wrong. I'd love to see several South American players in the top ten. I like the whole South American scene on the Men's side and if the women developed that would be great too.
