View Full Version : French final: will the Williams 'defend' their all sister final?

Jan 24th, 2003, 04:31 AM
Is clay the only surface where we may not see an all-Williams final?

Theyre VERY tough to stop irrespective of surface cos they both can dig deep when in trouble, but obviously they aren't as good on clay as they would be on other surfaces because some power is neutralized.

Do you think Kim or some other player like Jen, Momo etc with a good clay record might be able to make the final or will it be 5 slams in a row?......and what a feat that would be

i dont know but the FRENCHOPEN is the most difficult grandslam to have an all WILLIAMS final.

Jan 24th, 2003, 04:40 AM
I agree. Venus & Serena own Wimbledon and US Open. Those are like THEIR grand slams. Australia eluded them because it was so early in the year and they were often not prepared or injured. The French is probably the toughest because there are so many talented clay courters out there, and the surface doesn't favour their strongest strengths (like grass does). With that said, it's obvious that these girls can win on clay. They've both won multiple clay titles. So they are favoured, but it will be the toughest to defend. It should be exciting. Maybe Venus will take it this year!!!

You're kidding me, right? Venus and Serena haven't even played in the Australian Open final, and you're already talking about Roland Garros? Why don't we get through the first Grand Slam before we start worrying about the second one? Better yet, let's get to the clay court season, see how everyone is doing, and then start making judgments about the chances of an all-Williams final.

No I'm pretty sure we'll see one again at the French. Put it in writing now! ;)

It'll be tough for the sisters..I think they sort of took people by surprise last year..but this year everyone will definatly be gunning for them. I would really love if Kim could win the French..I got nothing against the sisters, and i'm not going to complain about another Williams/Williams final..I just think Kim really deserves a slam..and this one would be nice :D

I doubt it. They probably will come close to reaching the final (quarterfinals or semifinals), but only one of them will be in the final.

But who knows really, I didn't think they both would reach the final last year. :o

Jan 24th, 2003, 07:31 AM
it's the hardest slam to defend. And the thing with clay, is that there are so many clay specialists.

It will be the toughest. Who knows? Wait and see. Too early to say. We don't know who will be healthy or not!

Jan 24th, 2003, 07:40 AM
lol, already thinkin about the FO already. Are we that desperate to hope that there won't be another all Williams final? ;)

J/k..j/k..lol :)

I think it will be hard to stop them making the final. But I really hope that Kim holds up that trophy. I think Mauresmo also has a really good chance as does Henin, but I don't think Capriati has that great a shot. Hantuchova could surprise as could Dokic.

But I'm hoping it is Kimmie holding up that trophy;)

Jan 24th, 2003, 09:17 AM
I wouldn't mind seeing Kim holding up that trophy. :)

...After my Queen Venus of course. ;)

If Justine didn't get ill in Paris last year ... she was the one who keep one sister out of the final (she played 2 finals against Serena in the weeks before winning 1 one and losing one both in 3 great sets)

I think that Justine has a great chance in Paris this year!

Jan 24th, 2003, 12:44 PM

she beat serena is three tough set ending 76 and beaten in straight sets the following tourny so please dont be that confident.

Jan 24th, 2003, 12:50 PM
Jelena Dokic (believe it or not) can do some damage on clay too. Possibly a healthy Daniilidou. For me the finals between the sisters are just not that exciting but I do root for Serena always. But clay is definitely the surface where other girls have much better chances.

Jan 24th, 2003, 12:56 PM
I certainly hope that it won't be another williams final.
It's getting mundane here.
I would prefer Justine to go for it!

Ok I missed here but it was close in those 2 sets

for the record:
German Open Berlin F :
Henin def. Serena Williams 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(5)
Italian Open Rome, Italy F :
Serena Williams def. Henin 7-6(6), 6-4

And I'm still that confident

i bet you wont bet on that. henin winning the final, would you. again we will have to wait and see like we did the clijsters match. bye till french open once again.

BTW henin is great on clay but does not have an advantage over the sisters on clay. they are equal together with kim and cappy, memo. everything is wide open

Jan 24th, 2003, 01:00 PM
Kim and Justine have the best chance of getting to the final but I think it'll be a Williams final again, unless one of them is injured or something. Venus and Serena usually beat other contenders like Capriati, Mauresmo, etc even when they are playing bad.

I was talking about last year IF she wasn't sick!!

And she has a better game on gravel than the sisters but there are more things that decide if you get into the finale ...

But ti answer your queqtion .. if the French Open were now ... i would put my money on Justine! And if she doesn't get injured untill may i'll put my money probably again on her ...

Oh yeah go and put a lot of pressure on our girls again

Jan 24th, 2003, 01:06 PM
i will be shocked if henins first grandslam doesnt come at the french open. And justin may win a grandslam before kim does.

OMG! The Australian final hasn't even played yet and you guys are talking about The French and if they're gonna defend. C'mon you guys their dominance won't last forever so stop trying to find little ways to make them look vulnerable. I totally have nothing against Kim and Justine but remember this didn't have to be an Williams final. :p

Jan 24th, 2003, 04:07 PM
yeah, well they are makin all the other grand slam "THEIR" grandslams, i think the answer to this question will decide in how they do in the clay court season, last year venus had a runner-up, and serena had a title, a runner up and a quarter. clearly serena had more preparation, and that is what started her grandlsam run. anwayz, i think venus and serena will be sure to have a good clay court preparation to the French Open, we may even see them try and play doubles at the italian open( just hoping), but if they do have a good tournie season, they could be the favorites going in, they will be ranked 1 and 2 there as well, so kim clijsters may end up on venus side of the draw, and i think it will be harder for her to beat venus than serena.

Jan 24th, 2003, 05:24 PM
I thought this MYTH about them not being some of the best Claycourt players was killed last year. ah well.

Yes other players have better chance of beating them but they are still better than everyone NO MATTER the surface. If they play their best and everyone play their best they will ALWAYS win even when the matches are played on ICE, CLOUD, or any WILLIAM-PHOBIC surface!!!

you know why, They have BETTER all-round games than ANYONE else. When you pick the key components of the game, even for the weakest parts, they are still up there.

The reason they win on Clay is because they are better. Remember Seles vs Venus at FO '01?

...to answer the question, everything being equal, they are the favorites. But tennis is, and would always be, a FUNNY game. Anything could happen. By the way, i believe only Henin would stand a chance against them on Clay.

Jan 25th, 2003, 12:20 AM
i predict Clijsters vs. Dokic in the finals:)

Jan 25th, 2003, 01:20 AM
Fact: They both had an easy ride to the finals. Serena's semi is the sole exception.

Fact: Of the better clay-court players, Capriati should have beat Serena. Hingis didn't play. Henin, Clijsters, and Mauresmo folded early.

Fact: It's hard to bet against the sisters right now.

Fact: The French Open is very far awar from right now.

Opinion: Assuming the women on tour get some tenacity and stop choking by May, then I don't see either Williams sister winning Roland Garros.
