View Full Version : Raymond, Stubbs, Olympics

This thread is total speculation.

What advantage would there be for Lisa Raymond to break up her old doubles team?

Well, one is this? Lisa wasn't going to make the team in singles. Lst time, they took the doubles partner of one of the sinles players. Monica doesn't play doubles, at least more than once or twice a year. Lindsay's normal partner is currently unavailable.

Lindsay or Monica is likely to be the third highest ranked American. Venus and Serena are already a doubles team. The Captain's pick could quite likely be the doubles partner of the non-Williams singles player. That would yield a team with three strong singles players, AND a backup doubles TEAM.

Who's Lindsay's doubles partner at OZ?

It really depends on the rules, if i was the captain, i would just pick venus and serena, singles and doubles. but i think they have to pick three players. and if that was the case, surely venus and serena will be playing the singles and then there would be a doubles team, but really they have a better chance in sweeping the singles and doubles if they just let it be the sisters tennis olympics. but that wouldn't be fare, so i say venus ands erena in singles, and lindsay and someone like capriati, seles, rubin for the doubles, i would prefer to pick rubin, she is the better doubles player out of them.

My understanding of the arbitration ruling that came out of the whole BJK/Lisa US Olympic squad fiasco, is that the captain has to go by the singles rankings.

So unless splitting with Stubbs will somehow magically bump her singles ranking up 20 places, or they re-write the rules, she's still SOL.

I am not sure about that, griffin. The ruling was that the current rules were unclear and that they needed to rewrite them. Has anyone seen what the rule is now?

If it is that they go by the rankings and doubles is considered a separate event, then there is singles rankings and doubles rankings. If there is a doubles spot, that's it.

The arbitrator said that the decisison of BJK and the USTA was against the spirit of the Olympics. He said that the USTA drew up a memo on July 6 that granted King discretion in choosing the doubles player. The memo was drawn up "in flagrant violation of USOC requirements, the procedures and the fundamental principles of open, fair and objective olympic team selection". So, maybe the re-write was fairer and more objective. [Yeah right. Keep dreaming, Bea].

In any case, I do believe that, at this point in time, any strategy Lisa may be willing to follow is pretty pointless. Her chance was in 2000. Right now, the Williams sisters are untouchable. With reason. The doubles spot is for them if they want it.

Lindsay's partner is.........oh they lost ....was Lisa Raymond

"Lindsay's normal partner is currently unavailable."

Here's the problem with your theory. Corina Morariu was not injured when Lisa/Lindsay teamed up. If Davenport really wanted to try to make the Olympics in doubles, why not stay with Corina?

I think Lisa/Lindsay/Rennae/Corina orchestrated this partner switch (before Corina was injured) because of two reasons:

1. Lisa/Rennae could not get along on court anymore and had to break up.

2. Lindsay still wants to concentrate on singles and Corina has to place more emphasis on doubles because she simply isn't the singles player that Lindsay is. Teaming up with doubles specialist Rennae Stubbs fixes that problem.

Charlie2012 - The current rule is the top 3 singles players, plus a discretionary pick. Lindsay will the the third highest ranked American. I'm sure she assumes she'll EARN the singles spot.

well we will see if she is

and besides Lindsay and Monica play doubles every now and then so who knows?

And are BOTH V&S really needed to play singles?

Jan 23rd, 2003, 11:06 PM
i really don't think they are needed, i think what they should do is have serena play the singles, and the sisters play the doubles. it will be a switch, and serena will have olympic singles and doubles and venus will have olympic singles and doubles! that is how that should work, really i don't think venus would mind it at all!

Something that no one has mentioned yet..

Athens 2004 = Red Clay

3 singles players? Maybe Venus, Serena, Monica with the sisters in doubles too? Could work.
