Austrailian Open is trying to promote more Asian players...thus giving some Asians WCs, and renaming themselves Asia-Pacific Grand Slam. Here in the US commentators still call it the Aussie Open tho.

It is stil the Australian Open - its tagline underneath the main heading now is Grand Slam of Asia Pacific.

They have done it because of sponsorship mainly... Ford Australia used to be sponsor - but when they pulled out, they couldnt get another Australian Company to sponspor it as it was soo expensive - so they got an Asian company Kia... Part of the sponsorship deal was to market the tournemant more to Asia as 48% of their TV viewers are in Asia because they are on the same time zone. I have interviewed Paul MacNamee about this and it will feature in March's issue of Qantas Magazine - so if you are flying on Qantas in March - look out for it.
