Clough undergoes liver surgery

Brian Clough has undergone a life-saving liver transplant, according to a newspaper report on Monday.
Clough, who twice won the European Cup as manager of Nottingham Forest, had the operation in Ireland last week.

And his son Nigel, a former Forest, Liverpool and England striker, told The Sun that the operation had been successful.

"Dad's had a liver transplant and he's doing okay," he said.

Clough, 67, admitted in his autobiography that he had drunk heavily for several years and had been warned he would die if he did not quit.

He guided Derby to the league title in 1972 before taking Forest to successive European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980.

Another leading British football figure, George Best of Manchester United and Northern Ireland, also had a liver transplant last July after years of alcohol abuse.
