Collins Cup is finally being aired this week on STAR
SPORTS Asia.

We got the Collins Cup here airing 2 weeks ago - I managed to tape like 2 secs of it <g> ESPN's coverage wasn't the best though - the picture seemed distorted (not clear).

Tennis-Davenport beats Seles in Pan Pacific Open final

TOKYO, Feb 2 (Reuters) - A pumped-up Lindsay Davenport won a hard-hitting battle of former world number ones on Sunday, beating fellow American Monica Seles 6-7 6-1 6-2 to win her third Pan Pacific Open crown.

Third seed Davenport, chasing her first WTA Tour title since October 2001, hit back after losing the first-set tiebreak 8-6 to storm through the second set in just 28 minutes in front of a sell-out crowd at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Seles, runner-up to Martina Hingis here last year, tried desperately to stop the rot but, after trading breaks early in the third set, the top seed was buried under a blizzard of aces and passing shots from Davenport.

A bludgeoning backhand down the line gave Davenport the decisive break in the sixth game and the 26-year-old consolidated her lead by firing down her 15th ace of the match to go up 4-2.

A demoralised Seles suffered a meltdown in the next game, commiting two double faults to gift-wrap the seventh game to Davenport.

Muttering to herself constantly, Davenport clinched her eighth top title with another crunching ace on her second match point after one hour 41 minutes on court.

"Losing that first set gave me a big wake-up call. In the last two sets I played some of the best tennis I have played in a long time," said Davenport, who beat Hingis in the final here in 1998 and 2001.

"It was clear in my mind, finally, how I wanted to play -- win or lose -- and I was a lot more aggressive and swinging more on my returns."

Davenport, who has no ranking points to defend after missing the first half of 2002 due to knee surgery, said she could be back in the top five by the middle of the year.

"If I continue the level of play like I did today, I can win a few more tournaments. Hopefully, I will be back in the top five by Wimbledon," said Davenport, who pocketed a first prize of $189,000.
