GOLD COAST, Jan 4 AAP - After seven years searching for her first tour title, French tennis star Nathalie Dechy made up for lost time by overcoming Swiss teenager Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian to take out the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts women's tennis tournament here today.
Dechy's accuracy proved too much for Mikaelian's power as the Frenchwoman won 6-3 3-6 6-3 to take out her maiden WTA title - much to her relief. An emotional Dechy raised her arms in joy after sealing match point then began applauding the crowd of more than 1,000. "I'm so happy," said a smiling Dechy. "It was a joy because I really wanted to win one tournament. It is really special when you win your first tournament and it means a lot to me."
Mikaelian suffered a strained left calf in the third set but played on after treatment and still expected to contest this week's Canberra Women's Classic and this month's Australian Open in Melbourne. Dechy made her debut on the WTA in 1995 and her final berth on the Gold Coast was only the third of her career. On the way to the championship Dechy had accounted for two other power hitters, Russian Elena Bovina and Austria's Barbara Schett.
Mikaelian had beaten the more accomplished No.1 seed Patty Schnyder on the way to the final.
Mikaelian had the upper hand in the opening set but Dechy showed her fighting spirit while trailing 3-1, winning the next five games. After struggling with leg cramps, Mikaelian came back to equalise in the second. Mikaelian called for the trainer trailing 3-0 in the third set but after treatment refused to give up and came back to win the next two games with thrilling base line rallies. But Dechy, the world No.20 - 24 places higher than Mikaelian - steadied and took the final set. "Now that I have won one I say `okay - it's not such a big deal I can do another one'," she said.
"It's good for the rest of the season and for my confidence."
Mikaelian hopes her performance stitches up an Australian Open seeding. "I won a lot of confidence. Confidence that I can beat some top players," she said.
Here you are, gmt! I was wondering why you didn't show up in the GM thread.
So, you think you'll have a hangover tomorrow?
