Pretty decent (actually, quite a good) field for a first time event. Hyderabad is a great city too.

I know one wildcard entry for sure. Sania Mirza. She is from Hyderabad! .. What a thrill it must be for the youn girl to play a WTA event as a 16 year old, which even in her wildest dreams she would have expected to be in his home city!

Globosport, Mahesh Bhupathi's sports company that has brought the event in, had announced earlier that Fernandez, Pierce, and Tulyagoanova would be there. Great to see that Tammy will alo be there! .. Also glad to see Angie, Wynn etc.

Not sure of Nurpama Sanjeev. It will depend on what she feels about her own form and if she is ready to play one like this with a wildcard.

I'd expect this event to weaken ALT in the qualy field.

The reason i say this is that there is a 25k in Doha the same week. That will be a more attractive prospect for many players ranked 150 down, as they can get to teh latter stages of the 25k then play the qualifying of teh Tier event the following week.

And lol @ a grand total of 2 Americans.

they want to attract a top player or two still.
WC are an option.
but they were never gonna enter this on their own without getting some sort of backhander.

Sania :D :) good luck girl :)

Hyderabad is in the Southern part of India. It is the capital of state of Andhra Pradesh. It and Secunderabad are twin cities and supposedly the most-wired cities in India. It is 536 metres above sea level with a population of 3,449,878 (2001 census). It is completely landlocked about almost the centre of the southern Indian peninsula. It is about 1200 kms from New Delhi and about 600 kms from Mumbai.

Also another point of interest might be that it is Sania Mirza's home town. So how is that for a small geography lesson on Hyderabad. ;)

How is Nirupama Vidyanathan? Has she retired or?

Dhruv
Jan 8th, 2003, 12:14 PM
Nirupama Vaidyanathan is now married and is Nirupama Sanjeev. She is playing in a set of US satellites and challengers as she wants to get back into form She was injured and so has not played for a while but she has an injury protected ranking of around 200.
If she does reasonably well in the US I think she will probably ask and get a WC to the Indian Open as well.

You can check her progress out at the forum on WTAWorld for the Talahasse $10K and other challengers

Tulyaganovas participation is of course still in doubt, due to her injury. whatever decission she and her team make, I hope it is the right one.

Thank you for geo. lesson Dhruv:) and for explaning who Nirupama Sanjeev is.

i'm assuming Mirza is gonna get the MD WC than........:)
how about Isha Lakhani, does she have a chance
at getting a WC for qualifying at least?........:)
still remember that Henin and Angelique debut WTA
as 16 yr olds as WC and won Tier III tournament
on their home soil, hopefully Mirza is gonna
recreate that.....:)

There is an update at the official website (http://www.wtaindianopen.com) today about the latest list of players which they say is final.

Barna seems to have withdrawn from the seeds list but Angie's higher ranking moving her above there. Will still have about the same number of top 80 players exept for Barna and Garbin (who also seems to have withdrawn). Other withdrawals are from the bottom end, which is unusual actually. The cut moves down from 119 to about 135. Still a pretty strong field for a Tier-IV

Seeds (based on Jan 20 ranks):

Clarisa Fernandez, Tamarine Tanasugarn, Mary Pierce, Iroda Tulyaganova
Adriana Serra Zanetti, Angelique Widjaja, Jelena Kostanic, Martina Sucha

Others:

Silvija Talaja, Christina Torrens Valero, Cho Yoon Leong
Anotella Serra Zanetti, Flavia Penetta, Tathiana Poutchek
Evegenia KoulikovsKaya, Wynne Prakusya, Evie Dominikovic
Anastassia Rodionova, Maria Elena Camerin, Saori Obata
Renata Voracova, Jana Kandaar, Julia Vakulenko
Claudine Schaul, Mi-Ra Jeon, (WC) Sania Mirza

Withdrawals seem to be,
Barna, Garbin, Torrens-Valero, Neffa Delos-rios, Cervanova
Reeves, Koukalova, Rodionova, Perebiynis, Cargill, Ondraskova

Actually, according to the Jan 20 ranks, wouldn't Yoon Jeong Cho be among the seeds at #6?

It should prabably be:
Clarisa Fernandez, Tamarine Tanasugarn, Mary Pierce, Iroda Tulyaganova, Adriana Serra Zanetti, Yoon Jeong Cho, Angelique Widjaja, Jelena Kostanic.
This gives us 4 Asians in the top 8. WOW

I don't think Torrens Valero has withdrawn. Perhaps Jay meant Diaz Oliva? Anyway, I'll miss Barabar Schwartz and Tax. It's great that Flavia Pennetta will be coming.

The website seems to have some bug that converts J into L ;)

Wonder who's the "top player" they keep touting... could be Dokic due to her pix being plastered all over the site.

Jan 22nd, 2003, 04:33 AM
I'm surprised that Akiko Morigami did not get a direct entry. Her current ranking is higher that others like kandarr, vakulanko, schaul and jeon

Danny:

I think I meant Dias-Oliva .. :-) .. Yep, Torrens-Valero seems to be still there in the list.

What the heck, my guess on the top player (not really a "top" player yet) for a wildcard is SUNITHA RAO!! .. yeah, let's get her to play.

Danny: why don't you come over also to the forums Dhruv has set up for tennisindia.org ? .. Here is the link - http://www.sports-india.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=2

Well the latest scoop. According to the Hindu paper and other informed sources the second WC is going to Elena Likhovtseva

She will also be seeded as I am sure her ranking is high enough. That bumps one of the aforementioned seeds out. The last and final WC will be annouced in the next couple of days

Now that #13 Chanda Rubin has taken a wildcard, we have a new top seed. Five from the top-50 including Likhovtseva, and the 8th seed will almost surely be Angie at #68 now. Tremendous for a Tier-IV. Next week's rankings will be used for seedings.

Wouldn't it be fun to have Tammy win this? Then we wil have Thai champions at both the Indian tour events (ATP Chennai and WTA hyderbad) ..

any updates of qualifying field?

Shine On Silver Moon
Jan 25th, 2003, 03:36 PM
It is officially confirmed that Wynne Prakusya will partner with Angelique Widjaja for doubles... :bounce:

The 1st time on WTA Tour - they did partner for dbls at Pilot Pen Open in New Haven right before 2002 US Open...Then, 2nd time at Wismilak International in Bali...At both tourneys, they did not do well...This teamed-up of A & W was for preparation prior to Busan Asian Games...A & W played major roles in winning gold medal at Asian Games for women's team category...In women dbls final, they had too much burden and they did not play tough enough and lost to Korean pair...

I think, this Indonesian duo may get to be seeded...Based on WTA dbls ranking (as of 01/13/02) those who take part in this Hyderabad tourney: Elena Likhovtseva has the highest rank - 11 and second is Wynne - 28...while Angie way down at 82...

Bravo and great seeing you back as duo...! Let's rock India!:) :D :wavey: :bounce:
