View Full Version : My qualifying report (LONG)

Jan 3rd, 2003, 11:27 AM
Overall it was a great day. I kept changing courts every few games cos one of my friends wanted to see everyone. I took a pic with Majoli, Okga.b  , Sam Reeves and Pisnik. I also took pics of every player with my digital camera...i had fun playing with it ;). Anyway i wont be going to rd2 quallies but will be there on Sunday for rd3. I hope Olga gets that far ;).

today i didnt see a whole match, but i did see bits and pieces of every match...the guy i was with wanted to see everyone and i couldnt sit still in that heat for extended periods anyway ;). so here goes...

*firstly how id rate todays aussies!:-
1) Trudi Musgrave: i only saw some of set2 , she went up 2-0 with the break and consolidated it quite well. I think her 2 handed bh was her most reliable shot which was deep and consistent, her forehand is a bit too loopy tho and Lisa really attacked that side. She looked quite fit and in form and wouldve won a round against given an easier draw. She should be moving up the ranks if this match is an indication f things to come. Top 150 bound.

2) Lauren Cheung: right now she is not as good as Trudi, but IMO she will be as good if not better than her in the future. Her serve is already very good, a powerful first serve which gave her a few aces and a heavy second delivery. She also was fast around the court. Limitations were typical stuff for a youngster like poor shot selection and mental toughness on important points, but that will come with time...areas she needs to work on are definately her return of serve and perhaps some more consistency especially on handling the short balls. She should move in to the top 200 and beyond within the next few years.

3) Jaslyn Hewitt: she belongs in the challengers IMO to be honest. She hit some nice angles with alot of topspin but nothing that really was hard enough to outhit Irvin at all, who looked to be cruising at all times. Even when Jalsyn took control of the rallies she often lost control of them or made unecessary UE. I was a little embaressed taking photos of Jaslyn as shes so low key ;) but with my digital camera it stored hundreds of pics so i thought why not.

? Jenny Belobrajdic - i wanted to see her play Pitu and it was scheduled after 4pm. It was 4.30pm and no sign of that match. Perhaps they post poned it till Sunday? I doubt i will get to see Jenny now as im not going again till main draw.

Now my analaysis of the matches (i saw bits and pieces of all of them) :
* Morigami def Kandar - this was my favorite match of the day. From the onset there were very long and tiring rallies with both consistently hitting deep and precise. The ball really got a good whack by both players. Morigami seemed to love Kandar's pace and was very good at getting balls back for someone double-fisted . Akiko definately showed she's good enough for the top 50 and will move up up and up this year. Kandar looked in-form and struck the ball with purpose today, but the 3rd couldve gone either way.

*Reeves d. casanova in 3, something like 1-6 6-3 6-4 - i only saw the first few games expecting Miriam to win :(, but returned at the start of the 3rd hoping to see her come back. Miriam went down i think 1-4 then 2-5 and showed she was mentally strong to fight back the way she did so fearlessly with her powerful drives, but it was not to be. Reeves was playing at her Peak in the last set and kept slugging the ball at Miriam harder and harder without fail. Miriam will be a force at the Aussie Open. I congratulated Sam after her win and praised her for her fearless power game against a formidable opponent.

*Drake d. Boogert 6-0 6-4 - cant believe Kristie let the first set slip so badly. I only saw bits of set2 and Drake seemed to control most of the points with her deep drives, sometimes finishing them with a surpriisngly good shot.

* Majoli d. Cervanova 6-2 6-1. Majolis BH was very good in the first set, esp. down the line. In her opening game she looked confidenct with an ace and a bh winner dtl, and she maintained the aggressive frame of mind and mixed in a few drop shots. The rallies overall in set1 werent too long and of high quality, but Iva decided to up the ante after winning the first set with ease 6-2. The quality of the second set was much better from Iva as she finished off Cervanova dropping just 1 game in it to claim revenge for the loss at the French Open. I took a pic with Iva after the match and told her how awesome she was ;).

*Husarova d. Sanchez Lorenzo 6-4 3-6 2-2 ret. The first set was a set full of breaks of serve. It was tight and couldve gone either way. Both struck the ball consistent, and deep, but Husarovas variety perhaps put Sanchez-Lorenzo off her game just enough to sneak the first set. I also think there was a few tough line calls against Sanchez-Lorenzo in that first set but not u dean LOL...then i left after that set to go home as me and my m8 were lobster red as we were stupid enough not to bring sun cream.

*Barabanschikova d. Vanc in 2 easy sets something like 6-4 6-2 - i only saw the last few games and Olga seemed to be playing in her best form, moving the ball around to every corner of the court effortlessly and timing it very well. I spoke to her afterwards and wished her luck in rd2, she was very pleased with her game and i HAD to take a pic with her too (shes gorgeous IMO).

* Koukalova d. Voracova in 2 sets - saw a few games. They hit the ball hard and had some good rallies but Klara K's fh seemed a bit heavier and more consistent probably giving her a slight edge. Must be tough for a Czech to play a fellow countrywoman, and im sure theyre probably friends as theyre similar age.

* Ansley Cargill vs Camile Pin. I saw like two games. Ansley has a huge fh and a solid bh. Camile was a bit of a backboard and her groundies were kinda blocked without much on them which didnt seem to be working. I think Camile lost that match.

ADDITIONALLY (LOL) !!!! I saw a couple of rallies of Pisnik and Kapros' matches as i walked past. Tina was playing very consistent. Aniko was going for her shots in the first set and most of the time they came off, but in the 2nd and 3rd she mustve been hurting cos i was two courts away and could hear her grunts getting louder and louder as the match progressed. I also saw from the distance Kurhajcova playing Sandra Kleinova and Sandra seemed to be in control hitting it harder and more consistent.

I took about 40 pics on my digital camera which included all players and ive already transferred them via usb to my hard drive. So i should be posting them soon...btw Danker u will like what Lauren wore ;). I will add some of them some time tommorow (Sat.). If you have any q's ask up :).

Steve, I have a few questions if you don't mind answering... :o

1) Do you think Akiko has a chance against Iva tomorrow?
2) How was Lauren's on-court persona?
3) Were there anybody supporting Lauren during her match (eg. family, coach, etc.)?

Thanks! :wavey:

Thanks a lot Steve! :) Great report!

Are you sure Ansley won? I hope so! :D Yes, Ansley's biggest weapon is her forehand right now. Her lefty serve should help a little.

Steve, any sign of Conchita there?

How does Libuse Prusova and Lubomira Kurhajcova play?

Why did Maria Antonia retire?

thanks :D

1) Do you think Akiko has a chance against Iva tomorrow? If they both play the way they did Iva should sneak through because she has more oomph on her strokes. But Akiko is playing very well , getting it deep and alot back so it may trouble Iva.

2) How was Lauren's on-court persona? I thought Lauren stayed very cool most of the time. She didn't complain and just seemed to be out there trying her best.

3) Were there anybody supporting Lauren during her match (eg. family, coach, etc.)? There were quite a few people. A few of her frends, and some of her family so maybe about 8 or 9 people i think. No one really cheers in quallies but they did clap for her which is a rarity in quallies ;).

*How does Libuse Prusova and Lubomira Kurhajcova play? Prusova seemed to be able to play all-court and moved fairly well. Her serve looked decent but could be stronger. I think Lubomira was consistent but didnt really have a big shot.

*Why did Maria Antonia retire.? a thigh problem it seemed.

Maria Antonia should be fine for the AO... right?

cool reports, thx.:D

i think my report was quite accurate regarding Olga and akikos fine form!

OLGA ended up upsetting Irvin in rd2! :)

AKIKO beat Iva! (i thought she had a chance as she was so solid and could give Iva a problem with her constant depth and scrambling). ivaaaaaaaaa :(:(! She showed she still has the tools in rd1 but in rd2 she showed shes yet to be able to string anything together these days..............

Jan 4th, 2003, 02:26 PM
Nice photo with Olga! :)
