Article about Cho's win over Vera

The little known Korean Yoon Jeong Cho is into the semifinals of the ASB Classic after beating the fancied Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-6 1-6 6-3 on centre court on Thursday afternoon.

Cho was the lowest ranked player to make the main draw at 84 and has had to battle her way through the tournament on outside courts before taking centre court by storm in a match that lasted almost two and a half hours.

Cho goes on to play the winner of the game between Anna Pistolesi and Jill Craybas in the semifinal on Friday.

In a match that had more deuces than an Alcoholic Anonymous Christmas party Cho kept her cool while her Russian opponent let her temper get the better of her at crucial moments.

Cho went out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Zvonareva pulled the set back to 3-3. It was at that point a ball girl fainted in the 34-degree heat and had to receive medical attention.

Play resumed again after a short break and when Zvonareva dropped her serve again she was given a code violation for racquet abuse for swiping it across the floor.

Zvonareva then broke back and the first set went into a tie-breaker which Cho comfortably won 7-3 using positioning rather than power as her weapon.

The second set went the Zvonareva's way as she used numerous low hard shots that Cho found difficult to build an attack from and Zvonareva won the set 6-1.

It seemed at the beginning of the deciding set that both players were more interested in doing some surfing in Australia than playing in the semifinal as the first four games went against serve.

Zvonareva then lost her way in the sixth game of the set when twice having set herself up for the winning shot she played shockers to give the point to her opponent and eventually gave her service game away.

She became more frustrated with herself slamming a ball into the ground as she went from break point to losing the game on Cho's next serve

A controversial incident occurred when Cho had match point on Zvonareva's serve. A long rally was underway in which Cho had moved her opponent into a position to hit the winning shot, but at that point the ball Zvonareva was carrying under her skirt fell out onto the court and the umpire signalled a let, much to the frustration of the Korean.

It didn't matter anyway as a few points later Cho won another match point to book her place into the semi-finals.

"Much like I thought...Vera's fragile mental state had alot to do with her loss"

Congrats, YJ Cho! :)

Her semifinal against Anna P. wouldn't be that optimistic according to her interview. Cho could have given up her match due to blisters on the sole of her foot and still suffers from it. She was smart enough in the 3rd set using slice and net dash in the 3rd set to frustrate Vera,... but her biggest weapon is mental toughness.
I still believe her team-mate Mi-ra Jeon has bigger potential, though, .... it's good to see her doing well. It could be a big motivation (and pressure) to my fave, Mi-ra. ;)

Good luck.

Hi...KC...I do not include MG Mikaelian because she is more experienced than all these 6 girls...As for me, I really focus on them only...It does not mean that I do not regard other experienced young players like Hantuchova, Dokic, Bedanova and more...With some fans here in Jakarta...we have a forum to discuss 6 of them and at this moment, Vera is on top of the pack for her progressing career and at the bottom is Ashley...One of the fans said that she is like "Ivan Lendl"...she is the kind of player who really needs to work really hard to get in top ranking...He said that because he thought Ashley is not talented player...As for me, I do not know how he came to such conclusion...As far as I know, he had seen Ashley on courts in USA! Well, that's his opinion anyhow...Again, IMO...Ashley is very potential player to be top gun!:) :D :wavey:

vera was very upset and to say the least pissed at many points during the match,it was obvious that she wanted to win alot but i think she pushed herself too far loosing stamina to cho from hard hitting (also causing her to net the ball a few times),but she did manage to get in a few nice shots against cho.cho played a very good game, nice and deep so i think she is well worth congratulations!:D :)
