Can somebody clarify the situation concerning Caro?

As I type she's faltering a bit, but should close out her Luxemburg SF against Sabine, and if she wins tomorrow she'd qualify for Sofia.

But she's also 1st alt for Istanbul, and experience shows that the first alt almost always plays 1-2 matches at the YEC.

Can she play both?

Zenith.
Oct 19th, 2013, 05:16 PM
Caro's dad (I think) said to the Danish press that if Caro qualifies she simply won't play for some unknown reason (longer offseason?).

Caro can play both Istanbul and Sofia since she is an alt.

I think that would be smart. I think Caro is becoming smarter with her scheduling than she used to be.

A longer off season would probably be worth more to her than playing Sofia, for the simple reason that, as a top 10 player, she has to score a higher number of points there than the other participants before it actually starts to make a difference to her ranking. I don't know what Caro's lowest tournament points currently counting towards her ranking is, but it's probably 150+, which means she's probably not going to benefit appreciably unless she reaches the final.

She'll benefit more from a longer break so she's fresh and fit for the 2014 season.

I believe these year alternates won't get a chance to play.

Thanks for the info guys. It's fair that she can play both, because as Istanbul ALT she is not sure of any matches there. But this does illustrate the awkwardness of the current scheduling and qualifying rules for Sofia. In theory a player could reach the Istanbul SF as ALT, then go to Sofia and lose in the RR. Not a good look I'd say.

It would be nice. Shuai was great in their matches in Osaka:worship:, and they really seem to like each other personally.:)

But Sveta also wants to keep playing with Sam. Difficult choice for Sam. I wish she could do both.
Yeah. Sveta and Sam are both Grand Slam winners, so their team may get more chance to win a title.
I just wish Sam and Shuai can play together more than 5 wta tournaments.

I really thought Sam and Shuai would win the Osaka title. They played so great in all their matches before the final, but in the final they were not at their best.

Have you got any video resources of their performance? thanks a lot.

Interesting fact, that Dani (I like her, to be clear) once was awarded WC to that tournament, without qualifying. She robbed someone of that spot...Now she gets robbed...

wasn't that the 1st year it was held in Bali and she got the wc because she had played/supported the Bali tournament every year for 10 years? bit different!

Sofia/Bulgaria/Pironkova :hatoff:

that cannot be the only reason

so if it was held in Stockholm, Larsson or Arvidsson would get in? Or Athens and Daniilidou? Not to mention more exotic tennis places?

Yeah they like to have one local player to keep the crowds interested. Theoretically the tournament could choose to give the wildcard to a bigger name (IF they could get them to play) but since they get to choose the best bet is usually a local.

Didn't Date get a WC to the Bali event?
In any case, I still think WC candidates should be required to hold a MM title...

I just noticed that on the tournament website, Svitolina is listed as #9 on the final "Road to Sofia" list.

Does this mean that Safarova and Hantuchova have declined to go there as alts?
