She has motivation to work hard to be ready and competitive at tournaments and considers that she can still achieve more. Her goal is to be in top 10 next year

Will she?

Who knows, she made it to 17 this year, then got injured, missed the clay season, and played crap for the rest of the season. Had she kept up her beginning of the year level I think she would have made it to the top 10 again. Daniela always works extremely hard so fitness won't be a problem, but she has to get rid of those mental problems at once, I mean she'll hit 30 in just 5 months :help:

It's all about hard work, fitness & motivation ...2012 was dominated by players 30+ age category, so you just can't write off a player coz they've had a funky season due to injuries & lack of motivation.

Yeess she can certainly get there if she puts her heart to it, been there done that, could happen again :hearts:

Sammo
Dec 4th, 2012, 01:24 PM
It's not like it doesn't entirely depend on her though. I mean, her fitness is still great and her rivals now are worse than the ones she had in 2002/early 2003 and 2007/early 2008

It was one over 30 that dominated 2012 and as much as I like Daniela you can't compare the two at all.

And she needs to sort her head out, and that is the hardest thing to solve for a tennis player.

She has had a few 'funky' seasons not just one.

I doubt that she'd succeed, however, nowadays a lot of players achieve their peak when they get older so the chance is still there.

top 10 is packed with players like Kvitova, Stosur and Wozniacki.... that's the main obstacle on her way to top 10, because there are enough players in WTA who are a lock in top 10 , probably with 1 vacant place, taken by Errani in 2012

And you still have players like bartoli petrova cibulkova kirilenko kanepi ivanovic safarova julia etc to fight for top 10
It's really a big challenge for hantuchova

Not really, other than Errani...

With Wozniacki losing her top seed positions from 2012, she will have much tougher draws the coming season.

Stosur has been a headcase in 2012, won no tournaments and barely hang in there. Since the win from US Open she has been hitting the walls everywhere. Losing to players like Chang is a new low for her.

Also if Kvitova and Li Na does not sort their inconsistencies out, they may well fall off the Top 10 if they are not careful. There are many players in the 11-30 that can snatch the spots.

The 2012 Top 5 are pretty much a lock for 2013 Top 10, barring injuries. It's just that, Hantuchova is not really a powerful candidate to snatch the other 5 spots.

--

Though, if Hantuchova can lose to random players in the latter half of 2012, couple months after coming back from injury, I doubt she can get back to Top 10 again. She has so many points to defend the first half of the year, hanging in Top 50 is probably the best she can do till the clay season. That's if she does not get injured again.

Dec 4th, 2012, 02:34 PM
I'm not sure she'll make it back to the top 10 but at the same time I'm not sure what else she's supposed to say or aim for at this point. As a former top 5 player it's not like the reaction would be any better if she had said she would rather just sit back with mediocre results and hover between 30-40.

As a professional athlete she should be aiming high unless she's just there to accept 1st round prize money and maintain her bank account. She might not achieve top 10 status again but there's nothing wrong with it being a goal of her's. It isn't like she bashed the current top 10 or said that she believes she's way better than she is so I'm not sure where all of these vitriolic responses are coming from. If this is what motivates her to work hard in the off-season and through next year then good on her.

dsanders06
Dec 4th, 2012, 02:49 PM
Unlikely, but not COMPLETELY impossible. It's not like she ever depended on movement or fitness anyway, so the ageing process probably has less impact for her than for other players.

Itll be hard to come up from her upcoming very low ranking. If she can hit the ground running and boost her ranking without overplaying little shitty tournaments she may have a chance.

If she can double up big wins itd be encouraging. Especially if draws open up.

Nadias pretty much done it from a similar ranking (and similar age) and everyone wrote her off.

The real problem here is there is no sign that she has been able to rediscover any form since the stress fracture. Her record since returning is W8 L16,with 8 first round losses(plus going 0-3 in Sofia). We'll need to see some evidence that she is capable of producing top class tennis again.

I don't think she'll make it, but at this point of her career, it would be quite stupid to say before the year starts that her goal is to get to the top 25 when she obviously knows she can get there quite easily.

My point of view is that she better be striving for higher goals, that are quite tough but not absolutely impossible to reach, in order to keep herself motivated.

it's not that difficult as she didn't say top 5, half of the top 10 are disposable. But if she keeps going post injury form sadly she will end outside the top 100 by the clay season. This was an attainable goal before her injury.

it'd be a really tough thing to do but there are a few spots in the top 10 that should be available at some points. In my opinion, it's slightly unlikely but who really aims to be top 15 when you've been in the top 5 before, which is a much more realistic goal for her at the moment.

From her age group, Petrova seems to be the one with the biggest chance of reentering the top 10. Atm, Dani is not even top 30, which means that the draws won't be kind + she has a Pattaya title + Brisbane final to defend.

As a fan, I really want her to become a top player again, but I'm afraid that staying in top 50 will be a huge challenge.
